Glutamoptosis is the induction of apoptotic cell death as a consequence of the aberrant activation of glutaminolysis and mTORC1 signaling during nutritional imbalance in proliferating cells. The role ...of the bioenergetic sensor AMPK during glutamoptosis is not defined yet. Here, we show that AMPK reactivation blocks both the glutamine-dependent activation of mTORC1 and glutamoptosis in vitro and in vivo. We also show that glutamine is used for asparagine synthesis and the GABA shunt to produce ATP and to inhibit AMPK, independently of glutaminolysis. Overall, our results indicate that glutamine metabolism is connected with mTORC1 activation through two parallel pathways: an acute alpha-ketoglutarate-dependent pathway; and a secondary ATP/AMPK-dependent pathway. This dual metabolic connection between glutamine and mTORC1 must be considered for the future design of therapeutic strategies to prevent cell growth in diseases such as cancer.
Tuberculosis is an ongoing threat to global health, especially with the emergence of multi drug-resistant (MDR) and extremely drug-resistant strains that are motivating the search for new treatment ...strategies. One potential strategy is immunotherapy using Innate Defence Regulator (IDR) peptides that selectively modulate innate immunity, enhancing chemokine induction and cell recruitment while suppressing potentially harmful inflammatory responses. IDR peptides possess only modest antimicrobial activity but have profound immunomodulatory functions that appear to be influential in resolving animal model infections. The IDR peptides HH2, 1018 and 1002 were tested for their activity against two M. tuberculosis strains, one drug-sensitive and the other MDR in both in vitro and in vivo models. All peptides showed no cytotoxic activity and only modest direct antimicrobial activity versus M. tuberculosis (MIC of 15-30 µg/ml). Nevertheless peptides HH2 and 1018 reduced bacillary loads in animal models with both the virulent drug susceptible H37Rv strain and an MDR isolate and, especially 1018 led to a considerable reduction in lung inflammation as revealed by decreased pneumonia. These results indicate that IDR peptides have potential as a novel immunotherapy against TB.

•Graphite increases bulk density and λ up to 19% and 97%, respectively.•Specific heat capacity is ranging from 1.01 and 1.22kJ/kg.K.•Emissivity increases between 6.1% and 10.3% with ...the graphite addition.•Graphite-gypsum board reduces thermal fluxes between 6% and 54%.•Graphite-gypsum boards shows a higher efficiency of the radiant system.
European standards place great emphasis on the reintroduction of waste in the production chain. In this research, a combination of experimental tests has been carried out to analyse the use of revalorized isostatic graphite powder waste in gypsum-based boards. A series of gypsum pastes was prepared with a graphite content ranging from 0% to 25%, by weight substitution, and two w/b ratios. Its addition significantly increased the bulk density, thermal conductivity and emissivity of the samples until 19%, 97% and 10%, respectively. Additionally, a reduction of 54% in thermal fluxes towards the outside can be achieved when graphite-gypsum boards replaced gypsum ones at radiative constructive solutions.

In this research, an impact reaction which was provoked far from its origins was studied. A metal box filled with sand was used to emulate a rigid body in which a steel bar was embedded; these ...conditions simulated the fuselage and wing, respectively, and the impact was applied to the rigid body and the measurement to the bar. For this, an optical technique was used to measure the relative displacement of the steel bar, and the measurements are obtained by applying digital image correlation; 2D images were obtained from the speckles generated as a reflection of the beam on the material. The results were studied through the modified Gauss–Newton analytical approach obtaining a maximum standard error deviation of 0.144 from the experimental results.
Brucellosis is a worldwide zoonotic disease endemic in Mexico and of major economic importance to the livestock industry and public health. The increase of resistance and reduced susceptibility to ...common anti-brucella drugs in several Brucella species reported in recent studies have motivated the researchers to search for new antimicrobials where the antimicrobial peptides can be an alternative. The present is a pilot study in which the in vitro antimicrobial susceptibility of two bovine field strains of B. abortus and B. melitensis were evaluated against the antimicrobial peptides canine cathelicidin (K9CATH) of 21 and 38 amino acids. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 8 µg/ml for both cathelicidins was obtained against B. abortus, while none of the cathelicidins up to 128 pg/ml inhibited B. melitensis growth. Further studies including more clinical isolates of brucella and the use of combinations of these peptides with the conventionally prescribed anti brucellosis drugs could be useful in ascertaining whether these peptides have a synergistic effect.
In the present study the effect of antimicrobial peptide K9CATH was evaluated in a murine model of mastitis by Staphylococcus aureus. Mastitis was induced with a clinical isolate of S. aureus in 20 ...female Balb/c mice at 7 to 10 days of lactation. Ten mice (treatment group) received daily intramammary infusions of 32 pg/ 50 pL K9CATH peptide, for 3 consecutive days, and 10 other mice (control group) received only 50 pL of saline solution. Results showed a significant reduction (P<0.01) in S. aureus CFU counts in the treatment group compared to the control group. These data suggest that the K9CATH peptide could be a potential candidate for the treatment of bovine mastitis.

Lowe syndrome is an infrequent condition that affects several organs including the brain, kidneys and eyes inherited in an X-linked pattern. The most frequent abnormalities found are psychomotor retardation, Fanconi's syndrome and congenital cataracts and glaucoma. Enzymatic and molecular tests are available for confirmation of the diagnosis and for prenatal detection of the disease. The treatment includes: cataract extraction, glaucoma control, physical and speech therapy, use of drugs to address behavioural problems, and correction of the tubular acidosis and the bone disease with the use of bicarbonate, phosphate and potassium. Life span rarely exceeds 40 years. We present a case of Lowe's syndrome with renal abnormalities, bilateral cataracts and glaucoma, which were treated by trabeculectomy with mitomicin-C and lensectomy with anterior vitrectomy. It is important to acknowledge the potentially lethal repercussions to initiate an early multidisciplinary treatment.

The aim of this paper is, on the one hand, to provide empirical evidence about the existence and persistence of price dispersion, and on the other hand, to analyze whether the result meets Varian ...(1980) model, according to which, for the price dispersion persists in equilibrium, the position of each company in the distribution of prices (ranking) has to vary over time. The results confirm the existence of price dispersion, although the importance of it differs according to the type of product analyzed. Furthermore, evidence of the existence of temporal price dispersion is obtained as supermarkets change their position in the ranking of prices significantly after just three weeks. This certainly increases consumers search costs.web url:http://www.revecap.com/revista/ingles/default.html
