"Chemie im Kontext" (ChiK) is a project that aims at the improvement of chemistry teaching at secondary school in Germany. Based on a framework that was derived from theories and empirical data on ...the teaching and learning of science, science education researchers and teachers work together on learning communities to transform this framework into teaching and learning practice. Funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and the participating federal states, such learning communities have developed and tried units for almost all topics for upper and lower secondary education. The accompanying research studies show different effects on students' motivation: The ChiK units point out the relevance of chemistry, but the student-oriented learning approach can also lead to a feeling of getting lost in the context. One reason might be seen in the result that teachers have put more emphasis on the realization of a good context than on the second important principle of ChiK-the development of basic concepts. However, data also showed that the learning communities have indeed inspired and supported the teachers to change their teaching towards a more context-based and student-oriented teaching. The continuing work will now especially focus on the improvement of facilitating the students with a better guideline, and on the development and assessment of different science competencies. Inspired by the Salters Approach (UK) and ChemCom (USA), units for a new curriculum for chemistry teaching are being developed in Germany based on theories of scientific literacy, motivation, and ...situated learning. The curriculum follows a context-based approach. Rather than using the structure of the discipline, it generates basic chemical concepts from issues relevant to the learners, starting with the learners' ideas and questions. The teaching methodology of the course builds strongly on self-directed and cooperative forms of learning activities in the classroom. Currently, a large implementation program is under way with working groups of teachers in 14 of the 16 federal states (Bundesländer) in Germany. This program combines the development of teaching units, their implementation in schools, and the professional development of teachers. Now in its third year, the project has yielded positive results and funds for continuation have been granted.

Abstract
Leistungsschwächere Kinder der fünften und sechsten Jahrgangsstufe mit ihren oft unentdeckten und wenig geförderten Talenten sind die Zielgruppe des Projektes NaWi‐aktiv. Eine Förderung ...naturwissenschaftlicher Kompetenzen und Interessen wird mit der Weiterentwicklung anderer Fähigkeiten und des allgemeinen Selbstkonzepts der Kinder verbunden. Dieser Beitrag stellt das an fünf Pilotschulen in Schleswig‐Holstein realisierte Projekt mit seiner Kombination aus wöchentlicher Naturwissenschafts‐Arbeitsgemeinschaft und einwöchigen „Forschercamps“ vor und berichtet von ersten Ergebnissen der Evaluation.
Target group of the project “Nawi‐aktiv” are low‐achieving children of 5th and 6th grades who often have unexplored and sparsely supported talents. In this project, the support of scientific skills and interest in sciences is combined with the development of other skills and the scientific self‐concept of the children. This paper presents the project, which is currently realized at five pilot schools in Schleswig‐Holstein and which combines a weekly, voluntary scientific work group and week‐long “science camp”. First results of the evaluation are reported.
