El presente estudio explica la manera en que los ...habitantes preteritos del asentamiento prehispanico de Xuenkal, Yucatan, explotaron los recursos faunisticos durante el Clasico Tardio-Terminal. En este sentido, se analizan los posibles cambios en la dieta de esta poblacion como resultado de un incremento del poder politico y economico de Chichen Itza en la region. Por ultimo, se considera que Xuenkal fungio como un enclave comercial para Chichen y tambien se analiza la posibilidad de un intercambio de animales con otros asentamientos.//Zooarchaeological studies in the Maya area constatly complement our knowledge of human behavior as related to the environment. The present study explores the way how the ancient inhabitants of the prehispanic settlement of Xuenkal, Yucatan, exploited faunal resources during the Late and Terminal Classic Period. In this sense, possible changes in the diet, as a result of political changes due to the rise of Chichen Itza in the region, are scrutinized. The region between the Maya capital of Chichen Itza and its port site on the Gulf of Mexico was one of the most heavily traversed landscapes during the Classic period. Vast quantities of trade goods ...were conveyed inland from the coast on the backs of long-distance traders. This study explores the experiences of these traders as they transported raw materials such as shell and obsidian as well as finished ornaments to the urban center in exchange for salt from the northern salt beds of Yucatan. We utilize archaeological data from sites along this trade route with a focus on Xuenkal, where we have conducted excavations into the nature of regional changes during the expansion of Chichen Itza since 2004. Archaeological data coupled with view-shed and travel-time analyses provide a nuanced perspective on the travel experiences of the traders who maintained one important component of the Classic Maya economy.

Our understanding of the history of ancient Chichen Itza has been advanced significantly in recent years by the Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia's Chichen Itza Archaeological Project. ...One important advance has been the definition of a new ceramic complex for the site of Yabnal, which dates to the Late Classic period, and corresponds to the Motul ceramic complex of Mayapan. The majority of materials used to define the Yabnal complex come from recent excavation of terraces and platforms distributed throughout the entire area occupied by Chichen Itza in its heyday, but also includes finds in association with the construction and use of buildings with rooms such as the substructure of the Temple of the Initial Series. The most important ceramic materials include complete and restorable vessels obtained from sealed contexts. The Yabnal ceramic complex displays a variety of local and imported wares, similar to those found elsewhere in the northern plains, with the Slate Ware group proving possibly the most important. Ceramic Slate Ware is a high-quality ceramic characterized by the frequent use of volcanic ash as temper, and demonstrates a deeply rooted tradition in northern Yucatan, spanning roughly 600 years. Although most recent discussion of ceramics at Chichen Itza has focused on the Terminal Classic and Postclassic periods, this study examines the early Yabnal ceramic complex of the Late Classic period with a focus on the site, its chronology, and the important implications this ceramic complex has for the general history of the northern plains.

This account of the everyday politics of the World Heritage archaeological site of Chichén Itzá (Yucatán, Mexico) contributes to a new impulse in the study of heritage and tourism: the interests and ...participation of multiple publics in the production of sites of national cultural identities and international tourism. For decades, Maya residents in and around Chichén Itzá have been employed in the site's excavation, maintenance, and protection. For these indigenous heritage workers, patrimonial claims to the site are based not on the monuments themselves but on inherited job positions. The transformation of these workers into a local elite has occasioned contentious broader community politics as other local residents advocate opening the site's benefit stream to a wider group of stakeholders. This case study thus addresses the role played by heritage workers in the micro-politics of patrimony at a World Heritage Site.

La investigación del Proyecto Arqueológico Xuenkal (PAX) se enfoca en el estudio de la cultura material Sotuta y su relación con la ocupación Cehpech del Clásico Tardío-Terminal con el propósito de entender la naturaleza de tal transición. Utilizando una metodología de excavación de pozos de sondeo en contextos domésticos sugerimos que la ocupación pre-Sotuta fue mucho más robusta de lo que originalmente pensábamos. Los resultados del estudio del patrón de asentamiento demuestran que existía un asentamiento Cehpech extensivo que se extendía hacia la periferia, y las excavaciones de las unidades domésticas revelan que durante el Clásico Tardío Xuenkal era un asentamiento mucho más próspero de lo que imaginábamos y que sus pobladores probablemente tenían un contacto estrecho y recíproco con sus vecinos de Ek' Balam, Kulubá y Cobá. En contraste, el asentamiento Sotuta se limita a grupos residenciales localizados dentro del núcleo del sitio. Estos datos en conjunto sugieren que el control que ejerció Sotuta sobre Xuenkal está probablemente ligado al resultado de un conflicto político regional, más que una transformación autóctona.The ancient Maya center of Xuenkal, located in the Cupul region about 45 km northeast of Chichén Itzá, is one of the few known interior sites that witnessed a substantial Sotuta occupation. Proyecto Arqueológico Xuenkal (PAX) research is investigating the Sotuta material and its relationship to preceding Late-Terminal Classic Cehpech settlement in order to understand the nature of this transition. Drawing upon extensive test excavations and broad excavations of household groups, we suggest that the pre-Sotuta Xuenkal occupation was much more robust than previously hypothesized. Settlement data show extensive Cehpech settlement extending into the hinterlands, while household excavations reveal that Late Classic Xuenkal was both very prosperous and closely tied to neighbouring Ek' Balam and Kulubá, and more distant Cobá. In contrast, the Sotuta settlement is limited to clusters within the site core. Together these data suggest that the Sotuta control of Xuenkal may have been the result of regional political conflict rather than an autochthonous transformation.

A través del análisis iconográfico podemos observar que en el siglo décimo de nuestra era, Chichen Itza estaba dirigida por un rey todopoderoso quien se identificaba con el sol, continuando con esta ...característica tradición maya del período clásico. En el complejo del Gran Juego de Pelota, varias imágenes en bajo relieve muestran las ceremonias de acceso al poder de un gran sacerdote tras la muerte de su predecesor y nos indican su probable función al lado del rey, como segundo personaje del reino. Al mismo tiempo, la elite política-militar estaba representada por individuos acompañados por una serpiente erguida en forma de S. Los demás guerreros formaban un cuerpo colectivo con muchas responsabilidades, tanto políticas como religiosas. Este fue el contexto en el que se construyó y se adornó el Templo de los Tableros, cuya iconografía es el tema principal de este trabajo. Los tableros describen la formación de caballeros-tigres a cargo de una figura militar designada como Serpiente-Jaguar. Este último, que también figura esculpido en la laja que cubría el depósito enterrado en el templo superior, estaba asistido o controlado por otros personajes. El discurso iconográfico de los tableros anticipa el destino de los caballeros-tigres después de su gloriosa muerte, primero cuando acompañan el sol al amanecer y posteriormente cuando se transforman en aves. Este relato gráfico es comparable al destino de los guerreros aztecas tras su muerte si tenemos en cuenta los relatos de Sahagún y otros cronistas. Creencias similares debían ser usuales también en Teotihuacan como lo indica la frecuente asociación de la mariposa y del ave, a menudo combinados, con los guerreros. El Templo de los Tableros, sin duda demasiado pequeño para ser un telpochcalli (un colegio militar), era probablemente un lugar de reunión usado por guerreros, como lo sugieren su iconografía y su distintiva arquitectura que, dentro del mismo sitio, comparten con el Templo de los Guerreros.

While changing views of the sociopolitical history of the northern Maya lowlands now recognize that Chichen Itza's emergence as a major polity on an unprecedented scale occurred during the Terminal ...Classic period, rather than the Early Postclassic period, the ramifications of significant chronological overlap between Chichen Itza's rise and the demise of neighboring polities have been largely unexplored. The ancient Maya center of Xuenkal, located in the Cupul region about 45 km northeast of Chichen Itza, is one of the few known interior sites to contain substantial (and discrete) Cehpech and Sotuta occupations. The Proyecto Arqueológico Xuenkal (PAX) was initiated in 2004 to elucidate Chichen Itza's role in the history of the Cupul region and what role local Xuenkal elites may have played in negotiating regional political dynamics. As with many surrounding centers, it appears that Xuenkal's occupational history reached its zenith with the Late Classic–Terminal Classic Cehpech ceramic sphere. However, unlike neighboring sites associated with Cehpech, such as Ek' Balam or Yaxuna, Xuenkal also contained a substantial Sotuta settlement concentrated within the site core during the Terminal Classic period. These populations adapted into an evolving regional economy by dramatically increasing household production as compared to Late Classic groups. While Sotuta households were tightly integrated into Chichen Itza's regional economy, evidence for their direct state control is not readily apparent. We suggest that the relationship between Chichen Itza and regional communities was more dynamic than current models contend, and that Chichen Itza's political machinations across the peninsula must be considered in local contexts that varied across households, communities, and regions.

El trabajo presenta una propuesta de tipología de malacates procedentes de distintos sitios de las tierras bajas mayas del norte tales como Chichen Itza, Ciudad Caucel, Dzidzilche, Ek Balam, Poxila, ...Siho, Isla Cerritos, Ichpaatun y Xaman Susula. Tales malacates corresponden a temporalidades que van desde el período preclásico hasta el posclásico. El análisis de esta muestra se basa en la correlación de sus atributos formales. Otros atributos tales como el tipo cerámico, el contexto del hallazgo y sus elementos decorativos y simbólicos también son considerados. El principal objetivo es demostrar que en la península de Yucatan hay evidencia de una continuidad de la presencia de la industria textil, así como cambios en la forma y el uso de los malacates, que muy probablemente sirvieron para el hilado de fibras de algodón. Consideramos que estos objetos en el área maya, muestran una estrecha relación con las labores femeninas, esto a partir de su contrastación con datos provenientes de las fuentes etnohistóricas, de las representaciones iconográficas sobre la actividad textil y los mismos malacates provenientes de otras regiones de Mesoamérica, principalmente el centro de México. De manera particular, pretendemos determinar si es posible obtener información complementaria sobre el tipo de fibras que se hilaban con ellos o cuestiones más complejas, como la atribución de género y estatus, que son aspectos recurrentes en la interpretación de estos materiales arqueológicos. U radu se razmatra rasprava De jure et justitia belli contra Indos hrvatskog dominikanca Vinka Paletina koji se u prvoj polovici 16. stoljeća, prije pristupanja svećenićkom redu, na poluotoku ...Yucatánu borio na strani španjolskih konkvistadora protiv naroda Maja i opisao to iskustvo u navedenom djelu koje je sačuvano u latinskoj i španjolskoj verziji. Paletinov latinski tekst, koji se smatra kasnijom verzijom izvorne rasprave, predstavlja hibrid političke i pravne rasprave, s jedne, te putopisa i historiografije s druge strane. Autorov cilj je bio opravdati španjolsku vlast u Novom svijetu, pri čemu se obilno služio citatima klasičnih poganskih autora (Aristotel, Polibije, Plinije Stariji) te Biblije i crkvenih otaca poput sv. Augustina, te iznosio više ili manje uvijene kritike na račun svog slavnijeg dominikanskog subrata Bartoloméa de las Casasa, koji je osuđivao zločine počinjene nad urođenicima. U radu se ukratko prikazuju osnovne razlike između španjolske i latinske verzije teksta s posebnim osvrtom na Paletinov opis majanske arhitekture u gradu Chichén Itzá. Opis neodoljivo podsjeća na Vergilijev prikaz Junonina hrama u prvom pjevanju Eneide, čime Paletin dodatno potkrepljuje svoju tezu o prisutnosti drevnih Kartažana na Yucatánu.
