This book rejects the commonly encountered perception of Friedrich Engels as perpetuator of a 'tragic deception' of Marx, and the equally persistent body of opinion treating him as 'his master's ...voice'. Engels' claim to recognition is reinforced by an exceptional contribution in the 1840s to the very foundations of the Marxian enterprise, a contribution entailing not only the 'vision' but some of the building blocks in the working out of that vision. Subsequently, he proved himself to be a sophisticated interpreter of the doctrine of historical materialism and an important contributor in his own right. This volume serves as a companion to Samuel Hollander's The Economics of Karl Marx (Cambridge University Press, 2008).
El artículo se aproxima a dos posturas mediante las cuales el marxismo ha entendido el fenómeno religioso: la primera, como conciencia falsa, y la segunda, como conciencia utópica. Aunque el marxismo ...ha abordado las dos perspectivas de forma dialéctica: la primera predominó entre los primeros marxistas y sigue contando, en la actualidad, con un importante respaldo. Esta se caracteriza por entender la religión, fundamentalmente, como "opio del pueblo". La segunda, no niega el carácter supraestructural de la religión, pero reivindica su rol liberador, cuando emerge como forma de conciencia de los oprimidos, desde abajo, es decir, infraestructuralmente. La conclusión del artículo apunta a entender el carácter dialéctico del fenómeno religioso, desde la crítica a la primera postura, tomando distancia de planteamientos que la niegan. Se invita a estudiar la religión desde el materialismo histórico y a desarrollar la crítica económico-política de la religión que esbozó Marx, para comprender la complejidad del capitalismo.

En este artículo se analizo las ideas de Friedrich Engels acerca del materialismo dialéctico, desde el punto de vista de la filosofía de la ciencia de Thomas Kuhn. Argumento que los esfuerzos de ...Engels en textos como el Ánti-Dúhring y, más especialmente, en Dialéctica de la naturaleza pueden ser mejor apreciados si se entienden como un intento de cristalizar un nuevo paradigma científico, en el sentido que Kuhn (2000) define este concepto. Para esto, primero identifico las afirmaciones hechas por Marx (y antes Hegel) respecto de este tema. Luego, presento el concepto kuhniano de matriz disciplinar. En tercer lugar, aplico este concepto a la obra de Engels, identificando los componentes de la matriz en cuestión. Palabras clave: epistemología; filosofía; ciencia; marxismo; paradigma In this paper I study Engels ideas on dialectical materialism, from the perspective of Thomas Kuhns philosophy of science. I argue that Engels efforts, in works such as Anti-Düring or (even more so) in his Dialectics of Nature, are best understood as an attempt to crystalize a new scientific paradigm, in the sense that Kuhn (2000) gives to this last word. In order to do this, I start by identifying Marxs previous statement regarding this topic. Then I present Kuhns concept of a disciplinary matrix. Thirdly, I apply the aforementioned concept to Engels work, identifying all the elements of the disciplinary matrix. Keywords: epistemology; philosophy; science; Marxism; paradigm
