This book rejects the commonly encountered perception of Friedrich Engels as perpetuator of a 'tragic deception' of Marx, and the equally persistent body of opinion treating him as 'his master's ...voice'. Engels' claim to recognition is reinforced by an exceptional contribution in the 1840s to the very foundations of the Marxian enterprise, a contribution entailing not only the 'vision' but some of the building blocks in the working out of that vision. Subsequently, he proved himself to be a sophisticated interpreter of the doctrine of historical materialism and an important contributor in his own right. This volume serves as a companion to Samuel Hollander's The Economics of Karl Marx (Cambridge University Press, 2008).
El artículo se aproxima a dos posturas mediante las cuales el marxismo ha entendido el fenómeno religioso: la primera, como conciencia falsa, y la segunda, como conciencia utópica. Aunque el marxismo ...ha abordado las dos perspectivas de forma dialéctica: la primera predominó entre los primeros marxistas y sigue contando, en la actualidad, con un importante respaldo. Esta se caracteriza por entender la religión, fundamentalmente, como "opio del pueblo". La segunda, no niega el carácter supraestructural de la religión, pero reivindica su rol liberador, cuando emerge como forma de conciencia de los oprimidos, desde abajo, es decir, infraestructuralmente. La conclusión del artículo apunta a entender el carácter dialéctico del fenómeno religioso, desde la crítica a la primera postura, tomando distancia de planteamientos que la niegan. Se invita a estudiar la religión desde el materialismo histórico y a desarrollar la crítica económico-política de la religión que esbozó Marx, para comprender la complejidad del capitalismo.

This article analyses how Marx and Engels, political theorists, entered the contemporary debate on democracy in the 19th century. After the French Revolution of 1789, democracy became the great theme ...of the theoretical agenda of the 19th century. But interpretations were certainly disparate. In a very different way from their liberal contemporaries, Marx and Engels composed the theoretical justification for the action of workers beyond the bourgeois democracy. Transitioning between topics such as "true democracy," "Human Emancipation," "communism," and "dictatorship of the proletariat," the two authors formulated theories that not only informed the great polarization of the 20th century, but which still are reference to debates about the possibilities of an alternative to capitalism in the 21st century. The hypothesis presented here is that the tension between democracy and dictatorship in the work of the two authors allows different interpretations that guarantee its permanence in the current debate.
