This book presents Giovanni Gentile's actual idealism as a radical constructivist doctrine for use in moral theory. The first half describes the moral theory that Gentile explicitly identifies with ...actual idealism, according to which all thinking, rather than an exclusive domain of 'practical reason', has a moral character. It is argued that after Gentile's turn to Fascism in the early 1920s, this theory is increasingly conflated with his political doctrine. This entails several major changes that cannot be squared with the underlying metaphysics. The second half of the book develops a more plausible account of Gentilean moral constructivism based on the pre-Fascist idea of reasoning as an internal dialogue. Comparisons and contrasts are drawn with contemporary constructivist doctrines, as well as theories employing dialogical conceptions of reason. The internal dialogue is presented as a device enabling the thinking subject to make objective judgments about real-world problems des.
In the mid-1920s the poet W. B. Yeats was pleased to discover contemporary philosophers, Giovanni Gentile and A. N. Whitehead, whose metaphysical and educational philosophies seemed to coincide with ...his own commitments. Whitehead shares with Gentile a sense of reality as activity and an understanding of knowledge as constructed from abstractions that are open to evaluation and imaginative reconfiguration. Yeats was a Senator of the Irish Free State and took an interest in schooling. Soon after visiting a Montessori-inspired girls' school in Waterford, he began his poem 'Among School Children". (The text of the poem is printed at the end of this paper.) I argue that an awareness of the philosophical ideas Yeats had recently encountered should encourage restless rather than fixed interpretations of the poem and that this sense of restlessness and imaginative reconfiguration reflects the approach to education the three writers, at that time, shared: that at best our modes of apprehension provide only glimpses of reality and therefore each child's understanding and learning must be kept moving.

This is the first book-length study of the relationship between Benedetto Croce (1866-1952), Giovanni Gentile (1875-1944), Guido de Ruggiero (1888-1948) and Robin George Collingwood (1889-1943). ...Though the relationship between these highly influential philosophers has often been discussed, it has never been studied comprehensively. On the basis of published and unpublished writings this study carefully reconstructs their debate on the relationship between thought and action, following their explorations of art, history, philosophy and action in the context of the First World War and the rise of Fascism and Nazism. This book unveils the hidden past of contemporary philosophy of history and divulges the last secret of Collingwood's Italian connection.
The analysis of Michele Barbi's papers and correspondence aims at reconstructing the background of Barbi's donation of his library and archive to the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa, deep seated in ...the mutual trust and respect between the philologist and Giovanni Gentile, director of the School. Gentile, while carrying out the modernization of the Scuola Normale, achieved increasingly influence on the activity of florentine publishers; he actively cooperated with Barbi for his cultural programs and editorial projects in the field of Italian philology. Barbi determined and left in his will this donation between 1932 and 1938, a crucial period for the establishment of the new Accademia della Crusca, and its new role as editor of Italian classic literature. Gentile's role in the foundation of the Centro di filologia italiana inside the Academy was fundamental and puts into effect Barbi's programs and ideas. By donating his research and working papers, Barbi intended to establish a special library for the Italian philology seminars, intentionaly contributing to Gentile's projects for the developement of the Scuola Normale, based on his concept of philological research in Italy and the trainig of scholars and students as editors of reliable critical editions.
This set of twelve essays by one of the leading scholars in the field represents an authoritative view of the modern Italian intellectual tradition, its relationship with fascism, and its enduring ...implications for history, politics, and culture in Italy and beyond.

The Italian author Giovanni Gentile (1875-1944) occupied a radical position among philosophers of the first half of the twentieth century. He tried in earnest to revolutionize idealist theory, ...developing a doctrine that retained the idealist conception of the thinking subject as the centre and source of any intelligible reality, while eschewing many of the unwarranted abstractions that had pervaded earlier varieties of idealism and led their adherents astray. Given his great prominence during his lifetime, it is perhaps remarkable that Gentile is so little discussed, and even then so poorly understood, in the English-speaking world. Few of his works have ever been translated into English, and these represent only a fraction of his great corpus and the many topics discussed therein. This neglect is partly explained by his close association with the Partito Nazionale Fascista (National Fascist Party), of which he remained a loyal member and supporter between 1923 and his assassinatio.
The "Gentile question" presents a complex political project meant to transform both society and culture--a project that appears to be unconcerned with the secular character of politics and ...philosophical culture, as well as with theorizing about intellectual militancy. The question concerning Giovanni Gentile's joining of fascism can be traced back to WWI.
