"The dilemmas of citizenship were especially acute right after the Second World War. Refugees and stateless people had no human rights protections because they had no national citizenship. Countries further refined the entitlements of citizens according to perceived degrees of belonging. The term "Commonwealth citizen," for instance, was first used in the British Nationality Act 1948 to designate a person with limited number of civil rights, in contradistinction to a "British citizen," who had full civil rights and liberties. At the same time, citizenship assumed international dimensions, especially after the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) was adopted in 1948, which promises world citizenship for "all members of the human family." Around 1945 traces questions of citizenship and rights through literary, photographic, and cinematic examples. Novels are a particularly fertile genre for modelling the hanging obligations of citizenship because they represent conflict and change through time; novelistic plots incarnate rights through characters and events. Many of the chapters in this volume focus on novels, although others find other generic formations more amenable to the problems of citizenship, such as the notebook, the documentary, the confession, and the melodrama. These essays trace the rippling consequences of the Second World War from 1945 through the Cold War and into the present."--

How have human rights concerns shaped the ...literary marketplace, and how can literature impact human rights concerns? Essays in this volume theorize how both literature and reading literarily can shape understanding of human rights in productive ways. Contributors to Theoretical Perspectives on Human Rights and Literature provide a shared history of modern literature and rights; theorize how trauma, ethics, subjectivity, and witnessing shape representations of human rights violations and claims in literary texts across a range of genres (including poetry, the novel, graphic narrative, short story, testimonial, and religious fables); and consider a range of civil, political, social, economic, and cultural rights and their representations. The authors reflect on the imperial and colonial histories of human rights as well as the cynical mobilization of human rights discourses in the name of war, violence, and repression; at the same time, they take seriously Gayatri Spivak's exhortation that human rights is something that we "cannot not want," exploring the central function of storytelling at the heart of all human rights claims, discourses, and policies.
In the fifty years during which human rights have gained an international currency, personal narratives have become a potent vehicle for advancing human eights claims. This critical explanatory mixed methods study examined elementary teachers’
perceptions regarding the inclusion of LGBTQ-themed literature in the curriculum. An
electronic survey questionnaire and ...focus group sessions were used to collect both
quantitative and qualitative data that described the perceived benefits and barriers of
LGBTQ-themed literature and teachers’ level of interest in attending professional
developing on this topic. The sample population for this study consisted of 100
participants. All 100 participants completed the electronic survey questionnaire, and a
subset of 10 of the survey respondents participated in focus groups to explore further the
perceived benefits and barriers relating to the inclusion of LGBTQ-themed literature.
There were five key findings that emerged in relation to the research questions for this
survey: (1) although teachers perceive parental backlash and insufficient training as the
two most significant barriers preventing them from including LGBTQ-themed literature in their classroom, their beliefs and comfort levels surrounding LGBTQ individuals and
topics are significant barriers as well; (2) participants felt there were many significant
benefits that might result from the inclusion of LGBTQ-themed literature, including
building an increased awareness of diversity among students and less bullying in regards
to sexual orientation/gender expression; (3) participants felt that parents and
administration have significant control over what teachers can teach in their classrooms,
and that their autonomy and choice was straightjacketed by the demands of the parents
and administrators; (4) participants were interested in attending professional development
training focusing on the inclusion of LGBTQ-themed literature; and (5) Black
respondents expressed more hesitation towards the inclusion of LGBTQ-themed
literature as well as towards attending LGBTQ-themed professional development than
other demographic subgroups.
