As an iconic image of our time, the selfie has attracted much attention in popular media and scholarly writing. The focus so far has been on the representation of the self or subjectivity. We propose ...a complementary perspective that foregrounds the intersubjective function of the selfie. We argue that the presence of selfhood is often an assumption. What distinguishes the selfie from other photographic genres is its ability to enact intersubjectivity – the possibility for difference of perspectives to be created and this difference to be shared between the image creator and the viewer. Based on a social semiotic analysis of selfies on Instagram, we identify four subtypes of selfie, each deploying a combination of visual resources to represent a distinct form of intersubjectivity. Our analysis suggests that the potential for empowerment is inherent in the visual structure of the selfie, and that, as a genre, it is open for recontextualisation across contexts and social media platforms.

Information on social media, both positive and negative, can spread quickly so that it can affect the company's stock price. This study aims to determine the effect of posting on Instagram on ...abnormal returns. The sample used is 2,675 posts from 18 stock news accounts. Generalized Least Squares (GLS) regression is used to determine the impact of posting on Instagram on abnormal returns. The results showed that sentiment on social media had a positive effect on abnormal returns. However, there is a possibility of misinterpretation by investors and the participation of impostors, so the impact of information on social media on abnormal returns is only temporary. This study contributes to the behavioral finance literature by examining the effect of sentiment on Instagram on abnormal returns. In addition, information on social media can be utilized by investors by selling their ownership when the stock gets positive sentiment to get abnormal returns. Investors can buy stocks when there is a negative sentiment on social media because the stock price is lower than its intrinsic value, so it has the potential to increase again.
Instagram is the fastest growing social network site globally. This study investigates motives for its use, and its relationship to contextual age and narcissism. A survey of 239 college students ...revealed that the main reasons for Instagram use are “Surveillance/Knowledge about others,” “Documentation,” “Coolness,” and “Creativity.” The next significant finding was a positive relationship between those who scored high in interpersonal interaction and using Instagram for coolness, creative purposes, and surveillance. Another interesting finding shows that there is a positive relationship between high levels of social activity (traveling, going to sporting events, visiting friends, etc.) and being motivated to use Instagram as a means of documentation. In reference to narcissism, there was a positive relationship between using Instagram to be cool and for surveillance. Theoretical contributions of this study relate to our understanding of uses and gratifications theory. This study uncovers new motives for social media use not identified in previous literature.
•The main reasons for Instagram use are “Surveillance,” “Documentation,” “Coolness,” and “Creativity.”•Interpersonal interaction and narcissism are positively related to most motives for Instagram use.•Gender is the best predictor of Instagram use.

The aim of the present study is to investigate the effect of daily exposure to body-positive and fitspiration Instagram posts on young women’s mood, body satisfaction, and appearance comparison ...tendency. One hundred and twenty-two young Italian women (Mage = 22.29 ± 2.26 years) were randomly assigned to three different conditions of daily exposure on Instagram (i.e., body-positive, fitspiration and neutral content) and followed with an experience sampling method over a period of 28 consecutive days. Comparisons between groups were performed via multilevel regression modelled as a linear growth model. Results showed that daily exposure to body-positive images was associated with the highest rates of growth of positive mood and body satisfaction. Daily exposure to fitspiration images was associated with the highest rates of growth of negative mood and appearance comparison. In conclusion, the body-positive movement may be considered in interventions aimed at improving young women’s body image. Fitspiration content on Instagram should be deemed inappropriate.

•Sexualized female pictures posted on Instagram lead to greater body dissatisfaction.•Appearance comments have no effect on body dissatisfaction.•Instagram addiction predicts greater cosmetic surgery ...intentions.•Instagram addiction moderates the condition’s effects on cosmetic surgery intentions.
Instagram is a visually centered social media that involves the presence of sexualized imagery posted by users. Such Instagram sexualization may have a negative impact on women’s body image. The present study examined whether exposure to Instagram sexualization, namely posts of sexualized women along with appearance-related comments, affected women’s body satisfaction and cosmetic surgery intentions. In doing so, it also considered the moderating role of Instagram Addiction Proclivity (IAP). Young Italian female participants (N = 247) were randomly exposed to one of four video conditions resulting from the combination of either sexualized or non-sexualized women’s pictures on Instagram, paired with appearance or neutral comments. In the sexualized picture condition participants’ body dissatisfaction increased compared to pre-exposure levels and to the non-sexualized picture condition. The type of comments did not affect participants’ body satisfaction. Moreover, IAP predicted cosmetic surgery intentions and moderated their reactions to Instagram content. Indeed, the higher the IAP, the higher the cosmetic surgery intentions of participants viewing sexualized pictures with neutral comments and non-sexualized pictures with body appearance comments. These findings suggest that female Instagram users should be aware of the negative impacts of viewing sexualized imagery as well as the role that IAP may play.

•The concept of micro, macro and mega-influencers is adapted to the context of a small country.•The parasocial relationship moderates the effects of perceived popularity and perceived ...opinion leadership.•Micro and macro-influencers are both influenced by the parasocial moderation effect.
This study analyzes the effect of the parasocial relationship on the audience’s intention to adopt the recommendations of micro, macro and mega-influencers, considering the number of followers, perceived popularity and opinion leadership. A sample of 140 Portuguese social media influencers (SMIs) was classified into micro, macro or mega-influencers. 577 valid responses to a questionnaire were analyzed using Andrew Hayes’ macro PROCESS for SPSS. The findings suggest that the indirect effect between the number of followers and the intention to adopt SMIs’ recommendations is mediated by the perceived popularity and opinion leadership, and are moderated by the parasocial relationship. Significant differences are found between micro, macro and mega-influencers in terms of credibility, attractiveness and established relationship. The categorization into micro, macro and mega-influencers is adapted to the context of a small country. This paper provides relevant information on the process of SMI selection.

Palavras-chave: Extensão Universitária; Elasmobrânquios; Biologia; Instagram Scientific dissemination of the project “Conservação da Biodiversidade: Tubarões na Praia” through social media Abstract: Sharks and rays are animals that human activities have gradually impacted. One of the activities significantly affecting this group of fish is indiscriminate fishing, as a result of incipient environmental monitoring and enforcement, the use of common names for a variety of distinct species, and the processing of animals (e.g., decapitation) still onboard, making their identification difficult. Additionally, elasmobranchs have complex biological and reproductive characteristics that make them vulnerable to human activities and overfishing, such as a long-life cycle, late sexual maturity, and low fecundity. In this context, our premises suggest that the effective conservation of elasmobranchs involves the society as a whole and should be successful in adequately monitoring vulnerable and endangered species. Therefore, the project ‘Conservação da Biodiversidade: Tubarões na Praia’ (Biodiversity Conservation: Sharks on the Beach) aimed to integrate the Federal University of Paraíba (UFPB) and society to disseminate knowledge related to the diversity of elasmobranch species off the coast of Paraíba state, Brazil, their biological aspects, and levels of vulnerability, ultimately promoting their conservation. Our Instagram page reached approximately 1,500 followers, with individual posts averaging 150 likes and reaching around 600 accounts. The public engagement was significant, fostering not only knowledge exchange but also a new perception and heightened interest in the group.
