Internet of Things (IoT) is reshaping the incumbent industry to smart industry featured with data-driven decision-making. However, intrinsic features of IoT result in a number of challenges, such as ...decentralization, poor interoperability, privacy, and security vulnerabilities. Blockchain technology brings the opportunities in addressing the challenges of IoT. In this paper, we investigate the integration of blockchain technology with IoT. We name such synthesis of blockchain and IoT as blockchain of things (BCoT). This paper presents an in-depth survey of BCoT and discusses the insights of this new paradigm. In particular, we first briefly introduce IoT and discuss the challenges of IoT. Then, we give an overview of blockchain technology. We next concentrate on introducing the convergence of blockchain and IoT and presenting the proposal of BCoT architecture. We further discuss the issues about using blockchain for fifth generation beyond in IoT as well as industrial applications of BCoT. Finally, we outline the open research directions in this promising area.
Internet of Things is a platform where every day devices become smarter, every day processing becomes intelligent, and every day communication becomes informative. Architecture specific study does always pave the conformation of related field. The lack of overall architectural knowledge is presently resisting the researchers to get through the scope of Internet of Things centric approaches. This literature surveys Internet of Things oriented architectures that are capable enough to improve the understanding of related tool, technology, and methodology to facilitate developer’s requirements. Directly or indirectly, the presented architectures propose to solve real-life problems by building and deployment of powerful Internet of Things notions. Further, research challenges have been investigated to incorporate the lacuna inside the current trends of architectures to motivate the academics and industries get involved into seeking the possible way outs to apt the exact power of Internet of Things. A main contribution of this survey paper is that it summarizes the current state-of-the-art of Internet of Things architectures in various domains systematically.

Internet of Things applications for smart cities have currently become a primary target for advanced persistent threats of botnets. This article proposes a botnet detection system based on a ...two-level deep learning framework for semantically discriminating botnets and legitimate behaviors at the application layer of the domain name system (DNS) services. In the first level of the framework, the similarity measures of DNS queries are estimated using siamese networks based on a predefined threshold for selecting the most frequent DNS information across Ethernet connections. In the second level of the framework, a domain generation algorithm based on deep learning architectures is suggested for categorizing normal and abnormal domain names. The framework is highly scalable on a commodity hardware server due to its potential design of analyzing DNS data. The proposed framework was evaluated using two datasets and was compared with recent deep learning models. Various visualization methods were also employed to understand the characteristics of the dataset and to visualize the embedding features. The experimental results revealed substantial improvements in terms of F 1-score, speed of detection, and false alarm rate.
In this study, we advance two mechanisms that lead firms to engage in emerging digital technologies, namely, the dominant coalition's motivation and its ability to deploy the resources needed to ...pursue such motivation. Building on the performance and strategic development, and on board capital literature streams, we construe prior economic performance as a proxy of the firm's motivation, and human and social board capital as proxies of the firm's ability, analyzing their effect on adding emerging digital technologies, such as Internet of Things solutions, to the firm's resource base. Longitudinal analyses on a panel of Fortune 500 manufacturing firms between 2002 and 2012 reveal that these mechanisms highlight two important aspects of firm influence that can shape its digital technology behavior, explaining the heterogeneity and variability in firms engaging in emerging digital technologies.

As the Architecture, Engineering and Construction sector is embracing the digital age, the processes involved in the design, construction and operation of built assets are more and more influenced by ...technologies dealing with value-added monitoring of data from sensor networks, management of this data in secure and resilient storage systems underpinned by semantic models, as well as the simulation and optimisation of engineering systems. Aside from enhancing the efficiency of the value chain, such information-intensive models and associated technologies play a decisive role in minimising the lifecycle impacts of our buildings. While Building Information Modelling provides procedures, technologies and data schemas enabling a standardised semantic representation of building components and systems, the concept of a Digital Twin conveys a more holistic socio-technical and process-oriented characterisation of the complex artefacts involved by leveraging the synchronicity of the cyber-physical bi-directional data flows. Moreover, BIM lacks semantic completeness in areas such as control systems, including sensor networks, social systems, and urban artefacts beyond the scope of buildings, thus requiring a holistic, scalable semantic approach that factors in dynamic data at different levels. The paper reviews the multi-faceted applications of BIM during the construction stage and highlights limits and requirements, paving the way to the concept of a Construction Digital Twin. A definition of such a concept is then given, described in terms of underpinning research themes, while elaborating on areas for future research.

Recently, authentication technologies integrated with the Internet of Things (IoT) and cloud computing have been promptly investigated for secure data retrieval and robust access control on ...large-scale IoT networks. However, it does not have a best practice for simultaneously deploying IoT and cloud computing with robust security. In this study, we present a novel authentication scheme for IoT-based architectures combined with cloud servers. To pursue the best efficiency, lightweight crypto-modules, such as one-way hash function and exclusive-or operation, are adopted in our authentication scheme. It not only removes the computation burden but also makes our proposed scheme suitable for resource-limited objects, such as sensors or IoT devices. Through the formal verification delivered by Proverif, the security robustness of the proposed authentication scheme is guaranteed. Furthermore, the performance evaluation presents the practicability of our proposed scheme in which a user-acceptable computation cost is achieved.

In the modern business environment, characterized by rapid technological advancements and globalization, abetted by IoT and Industry 5.0 phenomenon, innovation is indispensable for competitive ...advantage and economic growth. However, many organizations are facing problems in its true implementation due to the absence of a practical innovation management framework, which has made the implementation of the concept elusive instead of persuasive. The present study has proposed a new innovation management framework labeled as “Absolute Innovation Management (AIM)” to make innovation more understandable, implementable, and part of the organization’s everyday routine by synergizing the innovation ecosystem, design thinking, and corporate strategy to achieve competitive advantage and economic growth. The current study used an integrative literature review methodology to develop the “Absolute Innovation Management” framework. The absolute innovation management framework links the innovation ecosystem with the corporate strategy of the firm by adopting innovation management as a strategy through design thinking. Thus, making innovation more user/human-centered that is desirable by the customer, viable for business and technically feasible, creating both entrepreneurial and customer value, and boosting corporate venturing and corporate entrepreneurship to achieve competitive advantage and economic growth while addressing the needs of IoT and Industry 5.0 era. In sum, it synergizes innovation, design thinking, and strategy to make businesses future-ready for IoT and industry 5.0 revolution. The present study is significant, as it not only make considerable contributions to the existing literature on innovation management by developing a new framework but also makes the concept more practical, implementable and part of an organization’s everyday routine.
In recent years, Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled health monitoring wearable devices have become a trend in healthcare systems, regularly collecting vital sign data from patients and uploading them ...to the cloud. Through on-demand search queries, data are shared with third-party healthcare service providers to monitor patients' health status and provide timely diagnoses. To ensure privacy and security, patient health data should be encrypted before being uploaded to the cloud. The cloud can give search encryption services. However, current searchable encryption (SE) technologies still have problems with forward privacy security and verifiability. This article proposes an IoT-cloud-enabled healthcare data system incorporating a SE method with forward privacy and verifiability. By designing a trapdoor permutation function, we render the resulting output indistinguishable from meaningless random data to the adversary. Thus, the adversary cannot judge the relationship between a newly inserted record and a past search token, and therefore, the system realizes forward privacy or forward secrecy. We propose a multikeyword search verification mechanism based on a pseudo-random function. Our approach solves verifying the correctness of search results in the top-k search scenario with partial search results. A formal security analysis proves that our scheme achieves forward privacy preservation, which can help guarantee healthcare data privacy. Additionally, a performance evaluation shows that our method is efficient and effective, providing an information security system to preserve patient privacy in IoT-enabled healthcare systems.
Identification of anomaly and malicious traffic in the Internet-of-Things (IoT) network is essential for the IoT security to keep eyes and block unwanted traffic flows in the IoT network. For this ...purpose, numerous machine-learning (ML) technique models are presented by many researchers to block malicious traffic flows in the IoT network. However, due to the inappropriate feature selection, several ML models prone misclassify mostly malicious traffic flows. Nevertheless, the significant problem still needs to be studied more in-depth that is how to select effective features for accurate malicious traffic detection in the IoT network. To address the problem, a new framework model is proposed. First, a novel feature selection metric approach named CorrAUC is proposed, and then based on CorrAUC, a new feature selection algorithm named CorrAUC is developed and designed, which is based on the wrapper technique to filter the features accurately and select effective features for the selected ML algorithm by using the area under the curve (AUC) metric. Then, we applied the integrated TOPSIS and Shannon entropy based on a bijective soft set to validate selected features for malicious traffic identification in the IoT network. We evaluate our proposed approach by using the Bot-IoT data set and four different ML algorithms. The experimental results analysis showed that our proposed method is efficient and can achieve >96% results on average.
This two-part paper considers an uplink massive device communication scenario in which a large number of devices are connected to a base station (BS), but user traffic is sporadic so that in any ...given coherence interval, only a subset of users is active. The objective is to quantify the cost of active user detection and channel estimation and to characterize the overall achievable rate of a grant-free two-phase access scheme in which device activity detection and channel estimation are performed jointly using pilot sequences in the first phase and data is transmitted in the second phase. In order to accommodate a large number of simultaneously transmitting devices, this paper studies an asymptotic regime where the BS is equipped with a massive number of antennas. The main contributions of Part I of this paper are as follows. First, we note that as a consequence of having a large pool of potentially active devices but limited coherence time, the pilot sequences cannot all be orthogonal. However, despite the nonorthogonality, this paper shows that in the asymptotic massive multiple-input multiple-output regime, both the missed device detection and the false alarm probabilities for activity detection can always be made to go to zero by utilizing compressed sensing techniques that exploit sparsity in the user activity pattern. Part II of this paper further characterizes the achievable rates using the proposed scheme and quantifies the cost of using nonorthogonal pilot sequences for channel estimation in achievable rates.
