This volume attempts to create a ‘relief map’ of temporalities in Estonian newspapers over different periods of time. The special focus is on binding the empirical analysis to the theoretical and ...methodological discussions of the temporality of news(paper) culture. The authors of the articles ask to what extent newspapers report on the past and present and to what extent these reports refer to the future. A diachronic analysis of newspaper texts from different periods of time demonstrates that the temporal focus of newspapers changes over time: in some periods, the past receives remarkably more attention, while in other periods the news timeframe is biased towards current events and the future. One study asks how similar, or different, is the (re)construction of the past in Estonian daily newspapers published in Estonian and Russian in 1994 and 2009. Two articles focus on analysis of the links between social remembering and anniversary journalism. Another article provides an overview of the depiction of women in Estonian newspapers and magazines from 1848 to 1940. This collection revitalizes the study of time in news discourse, suggesting new methodological perspectives and developing interdisciplinary approaches in cultural theory.
Linguistic borrowing involving both linguistic and non-linguistic factors continues
to occupy a significant realm of linguistic research. As such, this paper focuses on the
use of English loanwords ...in French and Italian journalistic texts. Special attention has
been given to the choice of texts to be analysed as it is vital to obtain a high level of
equivalence between topics and genres. In order to encompass a diversity of topics,
the analysis includes those which discuss issues of global relevance, including the
economy, international and European politics, environment technology, etc. Following
an examination of the empirical data, this article contrasts the share of English
elements in both languages at the lexical level of linguistic analysis.
The vast literature on discourse analysis includes many studies that investigate different types of texts & attempt to identify the properties that characterize them. Most of these studies consider a ...single text type in isolation, which often allows for the observation of only the most obvious features of the discourse considered. Here, a contrastive approach to the analysis of texts is proposed. In particular, it contrasts two distinct types of texts - newspaper reports & court judgments - with respect to the way they narrate automobile accidents. It is shown that this contrastive approach not only allows for a more accurate & systematic identification of textual features characteristic of each text type, but also facilitates the determination of the contextual properties that motivate them. 3 Tables, 1 Appendix, 31 References. Alderaketa honek, lagin hau osatzen duten bi herrialdeetan, mota honetako titularrek dituzten erredakzio linguistikoaren prozedurak aztertzea du helburu. In this research we studied the use of reported speech in the headings of current Spanish and Latin American press. We emphasized the way in which the headings of speech acts have developed their own ways of expression in the privileged space of the press texts. With this aim, we analyzed the corpus of press headings published in the second half of May 2007, both in Spain and in Latin America. This comparative study wants to show the process of text writing for this type of headings in every one of the countries included en the sample. Este trabajo aborda el uso del discurso en la titulación periodística de la prensa escrita actual en España y en Hispanoamérica, haciendo hincapié en la manera en que ha desarrollado sus propias formas de expresión. Con este fin, se analiza un corpus de titulares de periódicos correspondientes a la segunda quincena de mayo de 2007, tanto de España como de Hispanoamérica. Este estudio contrastivo tiene como objetivo mostrar los procedimientos de redacción lingüística de este tipo de titulares en cada uno de los países que componen la muestra.

Scholars of journalism, authors of handbooks in written journalism and stylebooks insist on a severe idea of literality in direct quotation in the news; linguists, instead, understand it in a more ...flexible sense. From this disparity of approaches, I developed this brief, but useful research work, from the original discourse, about the use of the direct quotation in the journalistic texts. Data confirm that the most pure concept of direct quotation is used in a minimum proportion in the practice of journalism. Journalists are likely to allow themselves a wide range of flexibility in treatment of quotation in direct style. los estudiosos del periodismo, manuales de redacción generalista y libros de estilo plantean, en general, una concepción rigurosa de literalidad en el uso de la cita directa en la noticia; en cambio, los lingüistas la entienden en un sentido más flexible. De esta disparidad de enfoques surge este breve, pero útil estudio, desde el discurso original, sobre el uso de las citas directas en los textos periodísticos. Los datos comprueban que en la práctica periodística el estilo directo, en su noción más purista, se aplica en una mínima proporción. Los periodistas tienden a permitirse considerables márgenes de maniobrabilidad al citar en estilo directo.

OUVERTURE AND RASSEMBLEMENT, TWO WORD-SLOGANS IN 1988 We would like to understand the politico-mediatic adventure of openness and rallying (ouverture and rassemblement) during the major part of 1988, on two main lines : the first attempts to confront linguistic functionning (sociopragmatic) and political turns of events (electorally valuable) ; the other seeks to appreciate the stakes at play in the circulation of these two « word-slogans » in their polyphonic and thus polemic dimensions.
