An investigator is interested in arbitrarily approximating a subject's latent beliefs in obviously dominant strategies (Li, 2017). We prove that Karni's ascending mechanism (Karni, 2009) does not ...have an obviously dominant strategy. Thus, we introduce the novel descending Karni mechanism which always has obviously dominant strategies. Furthermore, under the assumption that the subject chooses an obviously dominant strategy, the true beliefs can be approximated with arbitrary precision with our mechanism. All our results hold for a very broad class of likelihood relations, going well beyond those that are represented by probabilistic beliefs.

We revisit, within Harsanyi’s impartial observer setting, the question of foundations underlying procedural fairness concerns in welfare judgments. In our setup—that of allocating an
indivisible
good ...using a lottery—such concerns, presumably, matter. We draw from the social preferences literature and relax a typical assumption made while addressing this question, namely that individuals in society do not care about procedural fairness and such concerns arise exclusively at a societal level, which are captured by nonlinear social welfare functions (SWFs). In our model, individual attitudes toward procedural fairness are identified and factored into welfare judgments. Specifically, we provide an axiomatic basis within Harsanyi’s (J Polit Econ 63:309–321, 1955) framework to represent procedural fairness sensitive individual preferences by the representation in Karni and Safra (Econometrica 70:263–284, 2002). We then show, in terms of underlying axioms, how such individual assessments incorporating both risk and procedural fairness attitudes can be aggregated by means of utilitarian and generalized utilitarian SWFs.
The relationships between mining and land degradation, their potential socioeconomic impacts and extents were quantified and analysed in this study. A case study was conducted in the Upper West, ...which is an emerging mining region in Ghana. Land cover, socio-economic and monthly rainfall data were used in GIS. Mining-induced land degradation indices range from 0.02 to 0.80. The Fournier co-efficient model was used to obtain erosivity indices between 42 and 84 mm, bringing mining concessions into severe erosivity zones. The results of this study will facilitate a concerted effort by governments and companies to prioritise sustainable mining and rural development.

The article ‘Anthropology of Economy and the Sikh Concept of kirat karnī ’ describes one of the most important concepts of the youngest monotheistic religion – Sikhism, concerning the ethos of work ...in a wider context of economic anthropology.1 Sikhs, often called “the protestants of India,” do not follow the cast system of Hindu society, instead choosing the path of equality and aiming at the improvement of the economic status of people. The research is based on the canonical texts included in the holy book of Sikhism and interpretations of scriptures that were written in the span of over 200 years. The paper explains the philosophical and practical meaning of kirat karnī in Sikhism along with its understanding and development in the contemporary Sikh society in Indian Punjab.
