According to the Confucian-based Chinese tradition, the noumenon is not nature, for a universe without humanity is meaningless. From the point of view of an individual, the noumenon is the ...social-cognitive-emotional structure required for us to have any human experience, and thus is a priori.8 On the other hand, human nature, the human noumenon, is created by the sedimented cultural traditions and practices of individual people.9 The Chinese Aesthetic Tradition presents a nuanced and richly detailed account of how the practices - poetry, painting, philosophy, and lived experiences - of a group of philosophers and poets determined the Chinese aesthetic tradition.

Because of such an ...elegant, accurate, and extremely fluent translation, both specialist and nonspecialist readers are able to understand the depth of Li Zehou's thought as well as enjoy the breadth and scope of the source material the book covers.
