In this book Marx is revealed as a powerful contributor to the debates that now dominate philosophy and political theory. Using the techniques of analytic philosophy to unite Marx's general ...statements with his practice as historian and activist, Richard W. Miller derives important arguments about the rational basis of morality, the nature of power, and the logic of testing and explanation. The book also makes Marx's theory of change useful for current social science, by replacing economic determinist readings with a new interpretation in which systems of power relations are the basis of change. Part One discusses Marx's criticisms of the moral point of view as a basis for social choice. The outlook that emerges is humane but antimoral. Part Two argues that Marx's concept of the ruling class is a means, of measuring political power that is ignored yet urgently needed by present-day social science. Part Three bases Marx's theory of history on the dynamics of power, challenging both the standard, economic determinist readings of the theory and standard conceptions of science.
There are very few figures in history that have exerted as much and as varied an influence as Karl Marx. His work represents an unrivalled intervention into fields as various as philosophy, ...journalism, economics, history, politics and cultural criticism. His name is invoked across the political spectrum in connection to revolution and insurrection, social justice and economic transformation. The Bloomsbury Companion to Marx is the definitive reference guide to Marx’s life and work. Written by an international team of leading Marx scholars, the book offers comprehensive coverage of Marx’s: life and contexts; sources, influences and encounters; key writings; major themes and topics; and reception and influence. The defining feature of this Companion is its attention to the new directions in Marxism that animate the theoretical, scientific, and political sides of Marx’s thought. Gender and the growing importance of Marxist-feminism is treated as equally important to clarifying Marx today as traditional and diverse categories of critique such as class, capital, and mode of production. Similarly, this Companion showcases the methodological and political importance of Marxism to environmentalist politics. Finally, the volume examines in detail non-European Marxisms, demonstrating the centrality of Marxist thought to political movements both within and beyond the global north. This book is the ideal research resource for anyone working on Marx and his ideas today, and as an entry point, if you are approaching Marx's thought for the first time.
In this article, from what Brazilian philosopher Jose Chasin called immanent analysis, we will seek to explain the way Karl Marx deals with the city-country relationship. To this end, we will mainly, ...though not only, pass through The Capital. From the analysis of the different figures of capital, and the application of science in the field, we will analyze how, in capitalism itself, we have the potentialities that could provide, in a more advanced form of production, the overcoming of the opposition between countryside and city and between ground rent and profit.

Palavras-chave: Marx; Sobre a questão judaica; Direitos humanos; Política; Gênero humano. Based on the Marxian writings of the Rhenish Gazette (1842), we intend to analyze the formation of Marxian thought on the matter of politics and human rights. We try to demonstrate that Marx changes from an ontopositive conception of Law and politics, in 1842, to an ontonegative conception, at the end of 1843. The course of the author's work goes from the defense of the political state as something essential to sociability to the criticism of the state as such. In this moment of his work, in which it is essential to thematize the opposition between individuality and the Human gender; if, at first, Marx seeks the universal element of freedom in law, in Critique to Hegel's philosophy of law he focuses on the democratic form of government, and then, finally, on the Jewish question, such theses. The author seeks, then, to defend that the individual only rises to the level of a generic being when it recovers for itself its own forces that appeared alienated in the politics. The departure point for Marx becomes the Critic of Law, Politics and Buourgeous Civil Society. Keywords: Marx; On a Jewish question; Human rights; politcs; Human gender.
The interpreter of Marx's writings faces the task of reconciling, on the one hand, Marx's frequent explicit condemnations and criticisms of morality and, on the other, the obvious way in which his ...world-view reflects substantive moral judgments. In this book R. G. Peffer tackles the challenges of finding in Marx's work an implicit moral theory, of answering claims that Marxism is incompatible with morality, and of developing the outlines of an adequate Marxist moral and social theory. Peffer analyzes the moral components of Marx's thought and considers all the major interpretations of his moral perspective; he concludes that Marx is a mixed deontologist who is most committed to a maximum system of equal freedoms, both positive and negative. He then utilizes contemporary metaethical theory to show that Marxism is compatible with morality in general and with the concepts of justice and rights in particular. Peffer proposes a radically egalitarian theory of social justice (which subsumes Marx's own moral theory) and a minimal set of Marxist empirical theses, which together entail the Marxist's basic normative political positions. This book demonstrates that contemporary analytic political philosophy is invaluable for coming to terms with Marxism and that it is only Marx's less abstract empirical theories about classes and class struggle, the dysfunctions of capitalism, and the possibility of creating democratic, self-managing postcapitalist societies that are needed for the development of an adequate Marxist moral and social theory.
