The article is trying to highlight the major skills of a present-day translator, without which failure is assured. Although we start with general (classical) requirements, particular ones will be ...discussed, such as the gradual shift from PRAT (paper-and-rubber-assisted translation) to CAT (computer-assisted translation). We argue that professional translators in the 21
century must make use of personal computers and specific software designed to support translation: translation memories (TM), term bases (TB) and translation environments (TE), which already have built-in machine translation (MT) possibility as well. This shift also entails that translators have to deal with further impediments as well: the so-called "text"-to-be-translated has changed to "whatever"-to-be-translated. We argue that would-be translators are hardly ever prepared for this new type of multimedia challenge (e.g. surtitles), thus leaving room for technical experts to discover their skills in translating multimedia. It is our belief that managing translations is directly linked with managing translators, and there are more traps for translators in the 21
century than a layman would think. Consequently, we would like to offer some tips how to build and acquire translation databases in order to catch up with the 21
century rush hour in the field of translation.
Abstract
This paper reports on an empirical study that investigates the translation process in the workplace from a cognitive ergonomic perspective. In particular, the interaction between ten ...translators employed by a language service provider and the tools they deploy are examined. To that end, we recorded the translators’ workplace activities using keystroke logging, screen recording and eye tracking, combined with short retrospective interviews. We analysed their behaviour in terms of how they switched between the two screens on their desks, how they used different tools and where they invested their visual attention. Data related to productivity and quality are also presented. Among other findings, our data reveal that validation searches for terms and general expressions lead to considerable tool and task switching among professional translators.
Specialized communication skills, in combination with a multilingual professional competence, are crucial to address the demands of our today's complex reality. Over the last decades, institutions of ...higher education have more and more incorporated project-based learning (PBL) into their curricula, in a response to prepare students to new professional challenges and a wide range of employment opportunities. This paper presents a Project-based learning (PBL) approach by introducing Master's students of "Languages and Business Relations " at the University of Aveiro to two Translation Management Systems (TMS), i.e. memoQ and Memsource. Both TMSs allow students to explore a wide range of practical learning experiences, as they enable the creation of multilingual databases through term extraction, sentence alignment of bilingual corpora, the preparation of a project quote, among many other functionalities.
