Cultural and natural heritage are central to 'Europe' and 'the
European project'. They were bound up in the emergence of
nation-states in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, where
they were used ...to justify differences over which border conflicts
were fought. Later, the idea of a 'common European heritage'
provided a rationale for the development of the European Union.
Now, the emergence of 'new' populist nationalisms shows how the
imagined past continues to play a role in cultural and social
governance, while a series of interlinked social and ecological
crises are changing the ways that heritage operates. New discourses
and ontologies are emerging to reconfigure heritage for the
circumstances of the present and the uncertainties of the
future.
Taking the current role of heritage in Europe as its starting
point, Critical Heritage Studies and the Futures of Europe
presents a number of case studies that explore key themes in this
transformation. Contributors draw on a range of disciplinary
perspectives to consider, variously, the role of heritage and
museums in the migration and climate 'emergencies'; approaches to
urban heritage conservation and practices of curating cities;
digital and digitised heritage; the use of heritage as a
therapeutic resource; and critical approaches to heritage and its
management. Taken together, the chapters explore the multiple
ontologies through which cultural and natural heritage have
actively intervened in redrawing the futures of Europe and the

Creating and Governing Cultural Heritage in the European Union provides an interdisciplinary examination of the ways in which European cultural heritage is created, communicated, and governed via the ...European Heritage Label scheme. Drawing on ethnographic field research conducted at sites in ten countries that have been awarded with the European Heritage Label, the authors of the book approach heritage as an entangled social, spatial, temporal, discursive, narrative, performative, and embodied process. Recognising that heritage is inherently political and used by diverse actors as a tool for re-imagining communities, identities, and borders, and for generating notions of inclusion and exclusion in Europe, the book also considers the idea of Europe itself as a narrative. A major new interpretation of European integration. Leading scholar, Neil Fligstein, provocatively argues that European integration has produced a truly transnational European society.
Why do agents comply with the norms embedded in regimes and international institutions? Scholars have proposed two competing answers to this compliance puzzle, one rationalist, the other ...constructivist. Rationalists emphasize coercion, cost/benefit calculations, and material incentives; constructivists stress social learning, socialization, and social norms. Both schools, however, explain important aspects of compliance. To build a bridge between them, I examine the role of argumentative persuasion and social learning. This makes explicit the theory of social choice and interaction implicit in many constructivist compliance studies, and it broadens rationalist arguments about the instrumental and noninstrumental processes through which actors comply. I argue that domestic politics—in particular, institutional and historical contexts—delimit the causal role of persuasion/social learning, thus helping both rationalists and constructivists to refine the scope of their compliance claims. To assess the plausibility of these arguments, I examine why states comply with new citizenship/membership norms promoted by European regional organizations.
