The paper compares and contrasts two early treatises on the novel: Traité sur l´Origine des romans by P. D. Huet (1670) and Idée sur les romans by the Marquis de Sade (1800). Arguing for an Oriental ...origin of the novel, Huet cites his observations on the Oriental temperament, which is, in his view, best attuned to the demands of the genre. By contrast, the Marquis de Sade perceives the concept of temperament as a larger one (while opting for the Greek origins of the novel). For Sade, the novel is the product of two basic human needs, the need for prayer and the need for love: while it might be supposed to have made its first appearance (as such) in Egypt, the cradle of all cults, novels have been emerging always and everywhere.
Ruplova teorija o "slovenskem kulturnem sindromu" (SKS), podobno kot Pirjevčeva "prešernovska struktura" (PS), razlaga estetsko zavrtost slovenske književnosti kot posledico njene nacionalne funkcije ...- nadomeščanja politike in ideološke "nadstavbe" nedržavnega naroda. Obe teoriji sta vprašljivi, ker sta izpeljani predvsem iz samopercepcij slovenskih literatov in zanemarjata širši primerjalni kontekst: SKS ni nobena slovenska posebnost, ampak ena izmed variantnih uresničitev evropskega kulturnega nacionalizma. Iz iste ideološke matrice izhajata tudi slovenska nacionalna in primerjalna literarna zgodovina.
In the last few decades, comparative literature has spread even to those parts of the world that it had not reached before. However, at the same time it has faced a crisis in its traditional centers ...across Europe and North America, which has shaken its conceptual premises, theoretical foundations, and methodological structure, affected its inclusion in university and scholarly institutions, and jeopardized its social status. The discipline responded to this fundamental change through increased self-awareness and a true flourishing of relevant production directed towards fundamental reflections on its identity, the current situation, its genesis, and possible future paths.
