Thinned pear fruit are thrown away as waste although they contain nutrients such as dietary fiber. For the investigation of possible use as functional materials, five Korean pear cultivars ...(‘Chuwhangbae’, ‘Gamcheonbae’, ‘Manpungbae’, ‘Niitaka’, ‘Hanareum’) were studied at unripe stage to determine the physicochemical properties and chemical compositions. The cultivars were picked at 30 days after full bloom, and all samples were analyzed for external and physicochemical properties. The size of the fruit from all five cultivars was compared, and it was determined that fruit from ‘Gamcheonbae’ and ‘Manpungbae’ were large, while fruit from ‘Chuwhangbae’ were small. The moisture content ranged from 71.5-75.0%, with those of ‘Hanareum’ being highest and ‘Chuwhangbae’ lowest. The contents of crude lipid (2.30-2.94%) and crude ash (4.57-4.89%) were significantly different among cultivars. Dietary fiber was 13.0-18.2%, significantly higher in ‘Chuwhangbae’. The free sugar contents were 2.72-3.31% and were composed of sorbitol, fructose and glucose. Total phenolic and flavonoid content of 80% EtOH extract in ‘Manpungbae’ was higher than in other pears.
The recent analysis of the S-locus region of apple and Japanese pear, two species of Pyrinae (Rosaceae), suggested multiple and different F-box genes (called
SFBB
s) as candidates for the male ...determinant (pollen S) of RNase-based gametophytic self-incompatibility in these two species. Here, we followed a phylogenetic approach to take advantage of the pattern of molecular evolution of the S-locus of Pyrinae in characterizing
SFBB
homologs belonging to S-haplotypes of apple and three species of
Pyrus
(European, Japanese, and Chinese pears). Our results suggested that the S-locus region of Pyrinae contains no less than six
SFBB
members and that its structure seems to be rather conserved between apple and pear species. In accordance with the prevailing theory on S-haplotype evolution, the pollen S is expected to have coevolved with the
S-RNase
and to show some common features derived from the long-term evolution under frequency-dependent balancing selection, i.e., high sequence diversity, evidence of positive selection, and shared ancestral polymorphisms. Using this conceptual framework, we present evidence that some
SFBB
genes may be better candidates for pollen S in Pyrinae than others. Overall, the
SFBB
genes analyzed exhibited much lower sequence diversity than their associated
S-RNase
s; likewise, they showed little or no evidence of positive selection. However, evidence of coevolution with the
S-RNase
clearly emerged for two of them. Altogether our results suggested different evolutionary histories for different
SFBB
s putatively derived from their distinct involvement in self-incompatibility.

The lack of studies on compatibility of pear cultivars and rootstocks is one of the limiting factors on the development of the pear crop in Brazil. The use of quinces as rootstocks for pear cultivars has several advantages, among them the reduction in vigor and earlier bearing trees, however, its combination with some scions cultivars results in problems of incompatibility , such as lost of trees of the orchard due to break of the graft union. The objective of this study was to determine the compatibility between pears cvs. Packham's Triumph and Kieffer on the rootstocks Quince Adam's and Quince C. The evaluated variables were: the section of trunk diameter at the graft union, and 5cm above and 5cm under the graft union; the diameter difference between scion and rootstock; plant height; volume and dry mass of canopy and roots. Moreover, it was observed the vascular connection of the graft union by immersion of the base of the plants (under the graft union) in a 0.08% Fuccinic acid solution. It was observed that the pear cv. Packham's Triumph is compatible with the Quince rootstocks cvs. Adams and Quince C, whereas the pear cv. Kieffer had morphological incompatibility symptoms with the Quince cvs Adams and Quince C.

Most of the European and Asian pear cultivars, when cultivated under mild winter such as in Southern of Brazil, have adaptation problems. The temperature oscillations during the winter and the little chilling hours accumulation have been considered by some researchers as causes of flower bud abortion. The purpose of this study was to determine the levels of carbohydrates in tissues of flower buds of the two pear cultivars: Kieffer (P. communis x P. pyrifolia) and Housui (P. pyrifolia). Flower bud and its surrounding base tissues (bud cushion) were monthly collected since February until September 2002, from pear trees in a orchard of Embrapa Temperate Climate Research Center (32°51' S and 52°21'W), located at 230 m of altitude. The tissues of the flower buds and bud cushion were separately analysed for soluble sugars concentration (by GLC) and starch percentage (by spectrophotometry), in the Laboratory of Plant Physiology of Embrapa. It was observed that the bud cushion tissue is an important site of starch accumulation on both cultivars. There were marked increases in soluble sugars in the flower bud tissues of both cultivars, previously to budbreak. However the total soluble sugars accumulation in the buds of cv. Housui, in September (38,33 mg g-1 DW dry weight), were lower than those of cv. Kieffer (50,39 mg g-1 DW), which has better adaptation. Sorbitol followed by sucrose was the more abundant water soluble sugar in both tissues of the two cultivars.
