The aim of this paper is to take a closer look at the competences of foreign-language instruc- tors teaching English to preschool-aged children. More precisely, the goal was to investigate the ...professional and teaching competences of EFL instructors in the Osijek Kindergarten (Dječji vrtić Osijek) a city-wide institution consisting 26 preschools. The results shed light on the following issues: the different qualifications with which EFL instructors certify their professional competence, the extent to which the instructors are language models to the chil- dren, the extent to which the subject-specific organization of teaching is adapted to the young age of the children, and the use of teaching materials and aids. The results show that there are four different profiles of EFL instructors in the Osijek Kindergarten: preschool teachers, primary-school teachers with an integrated EFL program, bachelors of English language and literature, and EFL teachers with MAs in English language and literature. It was also esta- blished that the approach to teaching differed somewhat between preschool teachers and other profiles of EFL instructors – i.e., preschool teachers choose activities and materials that are more suitable to the abilities and personal interests of preschool-aged children.
This photo-text essay offers an analysis, illuminated by my own photo-tableaux, of the "Solar Constant" poem sequence from queer Puerto Rican, Chicago-born poet Rane Arroyo's last book of poetry, the ...2009 The Sky's Weight, published before his death May 2010. "Solar Constant" explores the cosmos and impending mortality through imaginative encounters with philosopher-cosmologists and astronomers who studied and debated the nature of the cosmos in relation to constancy and change, eternity and temporality, geocentric (earth-centered) versus heliocentric (sun-centered) models of the solar system, and, later on, the curvature of space, the bending of light by gravity, black holes, and the unsettling evidence of an expanding universe of both visible and invisible matter and energy. This photo-text essay examines the valences of this material for a poet conscious of the eccentricity of his own "astronomical optics" in terms of sexuality, ethnicity, and cultural (dis)location and displacement. Background: The antibiotic surgical prophylaxis (ASP) is very important as it can decrease the incidence of surgical infections. However, selection pressure of antibiotics is an important driver of ...antimicrobial resistance and may stimulate development of post-operative infections with resistant bacteria. This study aims to explore the level of compliance of ASP in daily practice with the set guidelines. Methods: Consecutive patients treated in the years 2011 and 2012 in UKCL were included in this retrospective study. Their medical records were reviewed and the results compared against the US Guidelines published in 2013. The following parameters were included in the study: application of an antibiotic prior to surgery, the appropriateness of the antibiotic and its dosage, application time and the number of doses applied. Results: Altogether 451 surgical procedures from 8 different UKCL's surgical units were analyzed. Patients age ranged from 18 to 97 years. Total compliance with the recommendations of ASP was achieved in 26 % of the cases. Antibiotic prophylaxis was applied in 87 % (range 62–100 %) of procedures with the indicated ASP. Appropriate choice of antibiotic reached 95 % (range 46–100 %). The lowest score was observed for the number of doses applied; the average compliance across 8 units was 46 %. Overall, the ASP was compliant with guidelines in 26 %. Conclusion: The study revealed that there is much space for improvement regarding the studied parameters of the ASP, in particular with regard to the appropriate number of doses of antibiotics administered. The prescribing and administrating of ASP in accordance with the recommendations depend strongly on the awareness and education of health care personnel as well as on supervision, feedback and supportive and blameless organization with good interpersonal communication.
Award-winning poet, playwright, short story writer, and scholar Rane Arroyo (1954–2010) authored a long list of books yet has received little critical attention to date.1 Born in Chicago to Puerto ...Rican parents, Arroyo earned a PhD at the University of Pittsburgh and later relocated to Ohio, where he taught English and Creative Writing at the University of Toledo until his untimely death. His 11 collections of poetry are especially notable for their often-humorous and colloquial engagement with popular culture in the United States, their experimentation with form, and their largely autobiographical and self-reflexive meditations on identity, influenced by his own life experiences as an openly gay, Puerto Rican man of working-class roots who navigated many predominantly Anglo and heteronormative spaces throughout his life. Arroyo's poetry deserves a larger posthumous audience and increased critical attention, particularly for its destabilization of the prevalent notion that a strong sense of place is a defining feature of Latinx literary production past and present, an idea that has been discussed widely by literary critics and literary historians and that stubbornly prevails in studies of Latinx cultural production in the 21st century, despite globalization and challenges to theories of place-based identification. Arroyo's writing, both published and unpublished, displays a strong interest in travel. He began a new journal for every place that he visited and wrote in each one daily during his trips, using the places and spaces around him as inspiration for his writing and as sites for (self-)reflection. In his archives, there is a London notebook, an Iceland notebook, a Louisville Kentucky notebook, a Montreal notebook, and so on. Arroyo seems to have traveled extensively--for conferences, for poetry readings, for leisure--and yet he described himself as a "homebody" who preferred his desk beneath a window in Toledo, Ohio, the warmth of his beloved cats in his lap, and the company of his long-time lover, all things he writes about in his unpublished journals and in his published poetry. Despite his self-proclaimed identification as a "homebody," however, in his poetry Arroyo portrays the very notion of "home" as an ambivalent and vague concept, as a US-born Puerto Rican often residing in predominantly Anglo communities.3 Furthermore, while he has been called a "Midwest poet" due to his associations with Ohio and Chicago and his inclusion of those landscapes in his work, his poetry and poetic voice actually refuse and resist such a static topography.

Behavioural problems observed in early and preschool-aged children (aged 0-7) correlate with their ability to socialise and adjust to school, as well as their ability to make school-related and other ...educational achievements in adolescence and adulthood. This suggests that it is important to recognise the timely deviations from normal psychosocial functioning and behaviour in children. It is well known that the period up to the child’s sixth year of life is crucial for the prevention of adverse developmental outcomes, including the development of behavioural problems. The aim of this study was to analyse the incidence of behavioural problems among preschool children in Croatia based on sex and their developmental status using data collected from parents and preschool teachers. This research assessed the behaviour of 447 children, aged 5-6 years, who were part of early and preschool education programs in 10 different kindergartens in Croatia. The results showed that an increase in the frequency of manifestations of behavioural problems was followed by a decrease in their participation in society. The preschool teachers estimated that 7% of the sample exhibited pronounced behavioural problems, while the parents estimated that 9% exhibited problems. There were no differences between boys and girls with respect to the estimates of the incidence of internalised behavioural problems, but preschool teachers and parents were more likely to observe externalised behavioural problems in boys than in girls. Both preschool teachers and parents estimated that children with disabilities were more likely to manifest internalised behavioural problems than those with typical development. The trickster has held a prominent place in the study of folklore, as much as it has been central to anthropological understandings of egalitarianism. In both, the trickster embodies an insoluble ...tension between the repressed, amoral desires of the individual and the moral demands of social life. This tension, so it goes, is visible in the ambiguity of the figure—a protean indeterminate being, neither good nor bad. Among the Jú|’hoànsi of northeastern Namibia, the trickster is similarly ambiguous. The figure conveys not a clash of values, but rather the doubt and uncertainty people feel toward those with whom they share resources, or about different ways of sharing and how they might relate to one another. This article approaches such uncertainty through a focus on the mocking phrase “you’re a trickster” and the moral discourses that accompany it.

Promjene socijalnih interakcija u suvremenom društvu ograničavaju prijenos tradicijske igre kao značajnog segmenta kulturne nematerijale baštine. Pretpostavlja se da bi uvođenje tradicijske igre u ...institucionalni RPOO doprinjelo njenom očuvanju. Ispitano je mišljenje odgajatelja i roditelja djece rane i predškolske dobi o važnosti i svrhovitosti primjene tradicijske igre u odgojno-obrazovnom procesu. Važnost tradicijske igre značajnije procjenjuju ispitanici starije nego mlađe životne dobi, te visokooobrazovani nego nižeobrazovani ispitanici. Mjesto odrastanja ispitanika povezano je s procjenom ograničenja tradicijske igre. Procjena igre na otvorenom bez nadzora odraslih pozitivno korelira s procjenom zaokupljenosti djece virtualnim svijetom. Provedba akcijskih istraživanja o mogućnosti implementacije tradicijske igre uz longitudinalna istraživanja dječjeg razvoja, moguće bi ukazala na važnost tradicijske igre.

U radu se istražuju kompetencije koje imaju osobe koje poučavaju djecu vrtićke dobi engleskome jeziku. Točnije, cilj je bio istražiti kakve su stručne i metodičke kompetencije poučavatelja engleskoga ...jezika na primjeru gradskoga vrtića koji obuhvaća 26 objekata. Rezultati prikazuju kojim kvalifikacijama poučavatelji dokazuju stručne kompetencije, u kojoj su mjeri poučavatelji jezični model djeci, koliko je metodička organizacija poučavanja prilagođena djeci rane i predškolske dobi, zajedno s izborom materijala i pomagala. Utvrđena je zastupljenost četiriju različitih stručnih profila poučavatelja koje čine: sveučilišni prvostupnici ili magistri ranoga i predškolskoga odgoja i obrazovanja, magistri primarnoga obrazovanja s pojačanim programom engleskoga jezika, sveučilišni prvostupnici engleskoga jezika i književnosti te magistri edukacije engleskoga jezika i književnosti. U odnosu na metodičku kompetenciju, opisane su razlike u pristupu poučavanju između prvostupnika ili magistara ranoga i predškolskoga odgoja i obrazovanja i ostalih stručnih profila budući da odgojitelji odabiru aktivnosti i materijale primjerenije sposobnostima i interesima djece vrtićke, a ne školske dobi.
Porast zdravstvenog standarda u smislu kvalitetnije i učinkovitije zdravstvene skrbi rezultira porastom očekivane životne dobi. U populaciji dolazi do porasta broja starijih osoba. S jedne strane ...povećana aktivnost starije populacije dovodi do veće incidencije ozlijeđivanja, a s druge strane raste broj komorbiditeta kod takve populacije. Poremećaji cirkulacije, dijabetes melitus, metabolički disbalansi i dr. te smanjeni biološki potencijal regeneracije tkiva ima za posljedicu povećanje broja pacijenata s
kroničnim ranama. One su značajan zdravstveno-sociološki i ekonomski problem za društvo. Zahtijevaju značajni angažman medicinskog i nemedicinskog osoblja u prethospitalnim i hospitalnim uvjetima, a značajni materijalni i nematerijalni resursi odvajaju se iz zdravstvene skrbi. Sve to rezultira smanjenom kvalitetom života bolesnika i njegove obitelji, odnosno skrbnika. Debridement je krucijalni medicinski postupak u liječenju akutnih i kroničnih rana. Rezultat debridmana je uklanjanje svih zapreka u rani i neposrednoj okolini rane, a koje opstruiraju odvijanje fi zioloških procesa u cijeljenju rane. Debridement se ponavlja prilikom svakog previjanja rane kada ima indikacija za njegovu primjenu. Postoji više vrsta debridmana. Svaki ima svoje prednosti i nedostatke. Metodu debridmana određuje liječnik ili druga stručna educirana osoba na osnovi karakteristika rane i u skladu sa svojom stručnosti i mogućnostima. U istoj rani mogu se kombinirati razne vrste debridmana, a sve sa ciljem što bržeg i kvalitetnijeg cijeljenja rane.
Sažetak: Postojeće životne situacije izazvane globalnom pandemijom bolesti COVID-19 krizni su i uznemirujući dogad strok signaji koji mijenjaju obiteljski život. Stoga je važno pružiti podršku ...obiteljima u ispunjavanju njihove odgojne funkcije, ostvarivati kontinuiranu komunikaciju i dijalog te osmisliti smjernice i strategije za med strok signusobnim povezivanjem, zajedničkim sudjelovanjem djece i odraslih u različitim životnim aktivnostima. Posebnu pozornost potrebno je usmjeriti na obitelji djece koja imaju posebne odgojno-obrazovne potrebe. Svaka obitelj, bez obzira na postojeće sposobnosti i mogućnosti djeteta, želi da njihovo dijete bude prihvaćeno i uključeno u zajednicu i u kvalitetne programe kako bi se djetetu osiguralo poticajno okruženje i materijali za aktivno učenje i kvalitetan razvoj, kako se ne bi povećavali dodatni izazovi s kojima se obitelji suočavaju tijekom pandemije. S obzirom na manji broj istraživanja o korelatima učinkovite suradnje odgojitelja u vrijeme bolesti COVID-19, posebice u našem okruženju, cilj je ovoga istraživanja ispitati jesu li odred strok signene sociodemografske značajke odgojitelja (godine radnoga iskustva i stručna sprema) povezane s odred strok signenim aspektima kvalitete partnerske suradnje u ustanovama ranoga i predškolskoga odgoja i obrazovanja u vrijeme pandemije koronavirusa. Za potrebe istraživanja konstruiran je Upitnik o kvaliteti partnerske suradnje odgojitelja i roditelja u vrijeme izvanrednih životnih okolnosti izazvanih pandemijom bolesti COVID-19 koji je proveden na uzorku od 313 odgojitelja. Izračunata je korelacija izmed strok signu samoprocjene partnerske suradnje i godina radnoga iskustva te stručne spreme odgojitelja, dok je analiza varijance korištena za testiranje razlika u procjeni nekih aspekata suradnje s obzirom na radno iskustvo odgojitelja. Rezultati provedenoga istraživanja pokazuju kako odgojitelji partnersku suradnju s roditeljima u vrijeme pandemije koronavirusa procjenjuju kvalitetnom te se smatraju kompetentnima u izgradnji partnerskih odnosa s roditeljima, kao i u pružanju podrške roditeljima djece s teškoćama. Odgojitelji s više godina radnoga iskustva smatraju se manje kompetentnima u korištenju digitalne tehnologije te smatraju kako im u tom aspektu treba više teorijskoga usavršavanja i praktičnoga iskustva.
