Early Christian depictions of heaven in sculpture are located mostly in an architectural setting. So-called category of "City-gate" sarcophagi is the most outstanding representation of this trend. ...Their background is composed of two parts of generalized and stereotyped city walls and gates, divided by a different architectural element set behind Christ. There is no controversy on the research regarding the setting of main scenes ("traditio legis", Lehrversammlung) represented on "city-gate" sarcophagi. Almost all scholars agree that they are set in heaven, but it is also important to analyze the background factors, which may clarify the co-existence and common message based on the fusion of historical reality and eschatological promises.
