Originally prepared by the ...Institute for Defense Analyses for the Office of the Undersecretary of Defense for Policy, this study presents annotated transcripts of Iraqi audio recordings of meetings between Saddam Hussein and his inner circle. The Saddam Tapes, along with the much larger digital collection of captured records at the National Defense University's Conflict Records Research Center, will provide researchers with important insights into the inner workings of the regime and, it is hoped, the nature of authoritarian regimes more generally. The collection has implications for a range of historical questions. How did Saddam react to the pressures of his wars? How did he manage the Machiavellian world he created? How did he react to the signals and actions of the international community on matters of war and peace? Was there a difference between the public and the private Saddam on critical matters of state? A major challenge facing humans in the 21st century is how to strike a balance between the mitigation of environmental degradation and the achievement of sustainable economic growth. On this note, ...this investigation applies an autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) methodology to a panel data of 28 European Union (EU-28) countries over the period 1995–2015. The study confirms the existence of positive and significant long-run nexus among environmental sustainability, renewable energy consumption and economic growth in the EU-28 countries. In addition, empirical results indicate that real gross fixed capital formation, carbon emissions and other environmental factors are principal determinants of long-run growth in the EU. Using Dumitrescu and Hurlin (2012) Granger non-causality in heterogeneous panel, results show long-run bidirectional causal relationships among renewable energy consumption, economic growth and other growth determinants. Based on these results, we infer that the exploitation of renewable energy sources in the EU-28 countries is a reliable pathway toward environmental pollution mitigation. Consequently, achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs) by the year 2030 through renewable energy consumption and carbon emission mitigation is very much achievable in the EU-28 countries, and should also be adopted by all countries as an effective global policy.

Due to the surge in global warming and economic competition, the governments of nearly all the countries of the world are struggling to maximize the deployment of such energy sources that emit less ...carbon and are cost-effective. Additionally, the utilization of cost-effective energy options induces industrial growth by supplying low-cost fuel to industrial sector. Therefore, this study seeks to assess the dynamic role of multiple energy sources in protecting industrial investment. For empirical analysis, we consider the 10-year firm-specific data of 11 Asian economies and employ panel EGLS and 2-step system GMM models for empirical estimations. The statistical outputs illustrate the positive and significant effect of three energy sources i.e. renewable, nuclear, and hydroelectric while the negative impact of non-renewable energy sources on corporate investment choices. The statistical analysis further guides on how this effect changes across countries that are not producing electricity from nuclear and hydroelectric sources. The empirical analysis was also robust across different industrial sectors. Our analysis provides multiple policy implications regarding energy transformation from non-renewable to other sources of energy and boosting the production of electricity from economical sources of energy. It further highlights the growth-promising role of specific sources of energy in expanding industrial investment.

Throughout the world, the threat of climate change is pressing governments to accelerate the deployment of technologies to generate low carbon electricity or heat. But this is frequently leading to ...controversy, as energy and planning policies are revised to support new energy sources or technologies (e.g. offshore wind, tidal, bioenergy or hydrogen energy) and communities face the prospect of unfamiliar, often large-scale energy technologies being sited near to their homes. Policy makers in many countries face tensions between 'streamlining' planning procedures, engaging with diverse publics to address what is commonly conceived as 'NIMBY' (not in my back yard) opposition, and the need to maintain democratic, participatory values in planning systems.
This volume provides a timely, international review of research on public engagement, in contexts of diverse, innovative energy technologies. Public engagement is conceived broadly - as the interaction between how developers and other key actors engage with publics about energy technologies (including assumptions held about the methods used, such as the provision of financial benefits or the holding of deliberative events), and how individuals and groups engage with energy policies and projects (including indirectly through the media and directly through emotional and behavioural responses).

This study analyses the relationship between economic growth and environmental pollution. Specifically, it investigates the presence of an environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) in 17 OECD countries over ...the period of 1990–2012. The results confirm the existence of an N-shaped EKC relationship between income and environmental degradation. The study offers a novel methodological contribution that makes it possible to explain the environmental pollution process through the analysis of low-carbon technologies. This demonstrates how income levels affect energy consumption and how higher energy demand leads to a larger share of fossil sources in the energy mix and, thus, increased greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The effect on per capita GHG emissions is explored in a model containing a dampening variable that moderates the relationship between energy consumption and income. This empirical evidence helps to explain the interaction between energy regulation, economic growth and carbon emissions. This study also confirms the positive effect that energy innovation process exerts on environmental pollution. Finally, it is noted that renewable energy sources help to improve air quality.
