This article examines the relationship between maternal exposure to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), intimate partner violence (IPV), and two aspects of maternal mental well-being-stress and ...depressive symptoms in the context of Tirana, Albania. Data were obtained from a representative sample of 328 mothers of 2-3-year-old children, who were registered in Tirana's public nurseries. Findings show that maternal ACEs are positively associated with stress levels (
= .210,
= 4.03,
< .001) and depressive symptoms (
= .129,
= 2.62,
< .01). In addition, IPV partially mediates the effect of ACEs on maternal stress (
= .081,
= 3.75,
< .001) and fully mediates the effect of ACEs on depressive symptoms (
= .054,
= 2.87,
< .01). These results suggest that among mothers of toddlers in Tirana, ACEs influence stress levels both directly and via IPV, while they influence depressive symptoms only via IPV. The findings demonstrate long-term effects of maternal exposure to interpersonal violence on mental well-being.

This study brings a rapid method to utilize the available open-source geospatial data in assessing the pedestrian accessibility to key public services/facilities. At this stage, we are testing the ...method in the case of Tirana, the capital city of Albania. Yet, the method is reproducible to other metropolitan areas around the world. Open street map (OSM) data and reference layers from Albanian National authority for geospatial information (ASIG geoportal) have been used as the raw material of the study. While the geospatial visualization, refinement, and analysis rely on the usage of QGIS software and the related plugins. QNEAT is the plugin that was used to generate the isochrones which indicate the spatial coverage of a certain service referring to the existing urban transportation/circulation network. The plugin enables the definition of different distance ranges. Our results show that certain public services serve to various amounts of the building stock at a gradient of walking distances. For example, more than 25% of the existing building stock has pedestrian access to caffes and pharmacies within a walking distance of 250 m. The same services serve to almost 90% of the same building stock within 1 km walking distance. However, services like banks are accessible only by 12.6% of the existing buildings within a walking distance of 250 m, and 67% at 1 km walking distance. The accuracy of the available geospatial data resulted to be vital for the reliability of the results. We conclude by highlighting the importance and utility of GIS-based methods of urban analysis in the processes of planning new public services in the city.

This research explores, from an interdisciplinary perspective, the presence of the character of the Galician in the eighteenth-century tonadilla from Madrid. In order to do so, manuscript sources from the Municipal Historical Library, the National Library of Spain, the Royal Library and Library of the Royal Conservatory have been consulted. Using a qualitative method and an approach similar to Ethnosymbolism, attention is paid to both the music and the texts. The results obtained show that the aforementioned theatrical stereotype could represent otherness, but not in a forceful way. The Galician character would speak in a macaronic language and would be associated with bucolicism, ingenuity, and kindness, but also with the mischief. As in many villancicos, the Galician may appear musically with melodies linked to the folklore of his/her area, sometimes fused with different genres. It is worth mentioning that the oldest known references to the word «muiñeira» are found in the tonadillas. An interesting textual and musical combination of the «gaita» and «tirana» dances has also been discovered. This article shows that the tonadilla, although castiza, did not always establish clear boundaries between identity and alterity. The work also refutes the idea that theatrical stereotypes had invariable traits.

The time children and teens spend in front of TV is one of the most disturbing phenomenon of parents not only in Albania but around the world. Watching TV for a considerable amount of hours is ...associated with a variety of problems in children, such as obesity, behavioral problems, sleep problems, insufficient engagement in the accomplishment of academic tasks and many other problems. The purpose of this study is to provide a broader overview of the amount of time Albanian children and teenagers in 1st, 5th, 9th and 12th grades spend watching TV. Do they watch more TV before they go to school or when they return from school? Is there a difference between boys and girls in the time they spend in front of the TV? But is there a difference between different age groups in this regard? The study was conducted in Tirana where (n = 698) children and teenagers participated in this study. It turned out that the children and teenagers interviewed watched more TV as they returned from school compared to before going to school. No statistically significant differences were observed between the boys and girls interviewed. No statistically significant differences were observed even between the classes taken in the study, but teenagers were found to watch slightly more TV than children. Important study resolutions are that before going to school most of them do not watch TV at all and after returning from school the highest percentage of the participants watch 1 to 2 hours of TV per day, which is acceptable for their age.
This article discusses heritagisation in Albania. It starts by situating the issue in the history of the country and the course taken by the city and the Stacioni i Trenit district. This district ...used to house the central station, until it was destroyed in 2013, as well as agricultural facilities which were dismantled after the fall of Communism in 1990. This site now forms a 25-hectare wasteland, characterized by a variety of informal uses, the incomplete reprivatisation of land, and a major urban transformation project. We explore how the legacies of agriculture and the railway in Stacioni i Trenit transpire in practices, how they are identified and used by the various protagonists, and to what extent the heritagization process may reveal social and spatial dynamics at work more broadly across Tirana and Albania today. Data presented in the text stems from a multidisciplinary research project conducted since 2018, combining urban planning, architecture, sociology, and anthropology.
•A study of mobility intentions of adolescents in Tirana, Albania – one of the least studied areas of Central and Eastern Europe.•The study shows that nearly three decades after the demise of state ...socialism, cars are still considered as a status symbol among adolescents, who never experienced socialism and its extreme restrictions on car ownership and use.•The findings are relevant to other post-socialist contexts.
This article discusses the mobility intentions of adolescents in Tirana, Albania – one of the least studied areas of Central and Eastern Europe. The main research question - explored through Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) - is whether now, nearly three decades after the demise of state socialism, cars are still considered as a necessity and/or a status symbol among adolescents This group never experienced socialism and its extreme restrictions on car ownership and use. Although Tirana is a very compact city with work, services, and social contacts typically within walking distance, the findings indicate that most adolescents in Tirana, including those who do not particularly like cars and driving, intend to purchase cars and drive in the future. Cars remain a strong status symbol. This does do not bode well for transport sustainability. If unchecked, adolescents’ intentions might directly translate into car-dependent travel behavior in the future.

The essay aims to investigate the relationship between monument and city through a study focused on the construction of Modern Tirana (Albania). The study of the buildings constructed between 1939 ...and 1943 is important for understanding the relationship between the built environment and the landscape - a condition lost in subsequent urban developments- and for the attention towards a fragile heritage at high risk. The issues of knowledge and conservation are extremely relevant and current in a context, such as Albania, where a major urban transformation is occurring and has already seen the loss of important testimonial traces of modern heritage. In this regard, it is emphasized the need to pay attention to architectures whose great fragility, in terms of recognition of material and immaterial value and conservation, compromises their transmission to future generations.
The concentrations of particulate matter and Fe in airborne particulate matter and transplanted moss were investigated to evaluate the air quality of Tirana city. It was carried out in the summer of ...2021 and the winter of 2020-2021. Particulate matter of various sizes (PM2.5 and PM10) was collected on Teflon-coated glass fibre filters. Fe was determined in PMs and moss transplants, the last were exposed for two months at the same monitoring site as PMs. The measurements were carried out in areas with heavy traffic during the summer under relatively high air temperatures, up to 23° C, which can affect the high concentrations of solid particles in the air and therefore high Fe levels. Statistical analysis was used to discuss the results of particulate matter and iron in solid particles and moss. A higher concentration of Fe was found in total suspended particles (TSP) and a lower concentration in smaller particles. The concentration data were compared with the recommended values in the European Directives. The concentrations of all parameters under investigation were higher than the permitted ones for rural and residential areas and lower than the recommended values for industrial areas. Correlation analysis revealed high and significant correlations (R > 0.8, p < 0.05) between Fe concentrations in moss transplants and particulate matter, showing a high effect of particulate matter on airborne Fe. It may increase human exposure through inhalation and lead to harmful health problems. This requires stronger measures to improve air quality in the city.
