Intended as a reminder of Europe for soldiers and clerks of the empire, the city of Dalat, located in the hills of Southern Vietnam, was built by the French in an alpine locale that reminded them of ...home. This book uncovers the strange 100-year history of a colonial city that was conceived as a center of power and has now become a kitsch tourist destination famed for its colonial villas, flower beds, pristine lakes, and pastoral landscapes. Eric T. Jennings finds that from its very beginning, Dalat embodied the paradoxes of colonialism—it was a city of leisure built on the backs of thousands of coolies, a supposed paragon of hygiene that offered only questionable protection from disease, and a new venture into ethnic relations that ultimately backfired. Jennings’ fascinating history opens a new window onto virtually all aspects of French Indochina, from architecture and urban planning to violence, labor, métissage, health and medicine, gender and ethic relations, schooling, religion, comportments, anxieties, and more.

Southern Voices: Biet Dong and the National Liberation
Front presents oral histories from former members of an elite
squad of Viet Cong operatives, focusing on their experiences during
what is known, ...in Vietnam, as the American War. Author Michael
Robert Dedrick conducted interviews with eight former Biet Dong
(the equivalent of Ranger or Special Forces divisions in the US
military) and sheds new light on this clandestine group.
Best known for their role in the 1968 Tet Offensive, the Biet
Dong in the south were organized units hiding in plain sight.
Members included farmers, tradespeople, agents, spies, monks,
students, intellectuals, and journalists-both young and old, men
and women. They were highly patriotic, politically motivated, and
very secretive, operating in three-person cells under aliases.
Their voices and experiences emerge in this bilingual volume.
In recent years, historians have made greater use of Vietnamese
primary sources and transformed the study of one of the twentieth
century's most controversial conflicts. Ably curated by Dedrick-who
also offers his own perspectives as a veteran and peace
activist-the firsthand accounts in Southern Voices add a
new layer to the history of the Vietnam War and its aftermath.

This groundbreaking study offers a major reinterpretation of American strategy during the first half of the Vietnam War. Gregory A. Daddis argues senior military leaders developed a comprehensive ...campaign strategy, one not confined to 'attrition' of enemy forces. This innovative work is a must for a genuine understanding of the Vietnam War.
The main objective of this study is to propose a novel hybrid model of a sequential minimal optimization and support vector machine (SMOSVM) for accurate landslide susceptibility mapping. For this ...task, one of the landslide prone areas of Vietnam, the Mu Cang Chai District located in Yen Bai Province was selected. In total, 248 landslide locations and 15 landslide-affecting factors were selected for landslide modeling and analysis. Predictive capability of SMOSVM was evaluated and compared with other landslide models, namely a hybrid model of the cascade generalization optimization-based support vector machine (CGSVM), individual models, such as support vector machines (SVM) and naïve Bayes trees (NBT). For validation, different quantitative criteria such as statistical based methods and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) technique were used. Results of the study show that the SMOSVM model (AUC = 0.824) has the highest performance for landslide susceptibility mapping, followed by CGSVM (AUC = 0.815), SVM (AUC = 0.804), and NBT (AUC = 0.800) models, respectively. Thus, the proposed novel SMOSVM model is a promising method for better landslide susceptibility mapping and prediction, which can be applied also in other landslide prone areas.
This book investigates why collectivised farming failed in south Vietnam after 1975. Despite the strong will of the new regime to implement collectivisation, the effort was uneven, misapplied and ...subverted. After only 10 years of trying, the regime annulled the policy. Focusing on two case studies—Quảng Nam province in the Central Coast region and An Giang province in the Mekong Delta—and based on extensive evidence, this study argues that the reasons for variations in implementation and the failure and reversal of the policy were twofold: regional differences and local politics.
A Companion to the Vietnam War contains twenty-four definitive essays on America's longest and most divisive foreign conflict. It represents the best current scholarship on this controversial and ...influential episode in modern American history. Highlights issues of nationalism, culture, gender, and race. Covers the breadth of Vietnam War history, including American war policies, the Vietnamese perspective, the antiwar movement, and the American home front. Surveys and evaluates the best scholarship on every important era and topic. Includes a select bibliography to guide further research.
Viet Nam is challenged by extensive marine plastic pollution, however, remediation efforts are hampered by undefined sources to the coastal environment. This study surveyed the abundance, type, and ...source of beached plastic litter at seven beaches along the coast of Nha Trang, Viet Nam. A total of 4754 beached plastic litter items (>2 cm) yielded a mean abundance of 19.8 ± 19.5 items m−2 corresponding to 116 ± 226 g DW m−2. Our results demonstrate that plastic litter related to fishing and aquaculture constituted at least 62 % of the total by weight and 38 % by number, showing that these two sectors are responsible for a significant part of the plastic pollution along the coast. Hence, we argue that improved management of the fishing and aquaculture sectors could substantially reduce marine plastic pollution along Viet Nam's coast.
•Viet Nam is a hotspot for beached marine plastic litter.•In order to reduce plastic pollution along the coast of Viet Nam the sectors of fishing and aquaculture should be targeted.•Food containers constituted the majority of litter from households whereas thermal boxes and ropes made up the majority of litter from fishing and aquaculture sectors.•Plastic pollution must be reported by weight and by number to fully account for plastic debris in a region.

In this innovative, cross-continental comparison of nation-building in Germany and Vietnam, the focus is on their shared experience of division, communism and regional integration, offering original insights into how governments go about maintaining nation-state legitimacy in the twenty-first century. Neither German nor Vietnamese governments have succeeded in effacing national division, for a host of historical, economic, psychological, sociological and even climatic reasons. Yet their efforts tell us a great deal about how national identity is negotiated today. The study offers a fresh perspective on nationalist ideology which will be of interest to specialists and students in comparative politics, European and Southeast Asian studies as well as nationalism studies. For the general reader, it provides a fascinating introduction to contemporary nation-building in a unique combination of cases across two continents.
INTRODUCTION: Progress towards ending tuberculosis (TB) in Viet Nam includes monitoring the costs borne by patients through periodic facility-based surveys.OBJECTIVE: To document the magnitude of ...costs incurred by TB-affected households and establish a baseline for the top End TB
indicator in Viet Nam.METHODS: A national survey with retrospective data collection and projection among 735 participants in 20 stratified clusters was conducted in 2016. Each patient was interviewed on costs, time loss, coping measures and asset ownership. Total costs were expressed as
a proportion of annual household income.RESULTS: In Viet Nam, 63% of households affected by TB or multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) experienced costs that were >20% of their annual household income. The mean patient costs were respectively US$1054 and US$4302 per episode
of TB and MDR-TB. The most significant drivers of mean costs were income loss reported and purchase of special foods, nutritional supplements, travel and accommodation.CONCLUSION: The proportion of households experiencing catastrophic total costs due to TB in Viet Nam is high, which poses
a barrier to TB diagnosis and treatment. Based on study results, programme and partners need to identify key areas for policy action and work towards a national policy guide on intervention to reduce TB patient costs.
This 1750 text, written by a Catholic missionary in Tonkin, is the earliest known systematic first-hand account of Vietnamese religious practice, including chapters on Confucianism, Buddhism, the ...worship of spirits, magicians, fortune tellers and diviners, and Christianity in the region. It was recently discovered in a Paris archive and will be of interest to a broad array of scholars. Includes a facsimile of the original manuscript.
