The meaning of the neologism Ἑλληνιστὰι in the New Testament (Acts 6:1; 9:29; 11:20), although only three times, is not as simple as one might think. The Indonesian Bible (TB, BIMK) defines its first ...two usages as linguistic differences (“Greek-speaking Jews”). The third usage is not even clear whether it is the category of descent (“Greeks”) or religious (“non-Jewish people”). There is a tendency for Ἑλληνιστὰι to be translated non-uniformly, but there is also a uniformity. In the context of this word study, the first step is to determine Ἕλληνες as the root and origin of Ἑλληνιστὰι. Since the semantic meaning of Ἕλληνες includes Greeks by descent and Greeks culturally, the second step is to examine the consistency of the differentiation of Graeci and gentiles in the Vulgate for both Greekishness. The fact that Ἑλληνιστὰι translations are so varied makes the final step necessary, namely to reinterpret the word in its context. As a result, neologism is needed for Indonesian vocabulary: “Helenis” (or Hellenist) for cultural Ἕλληνες and “Yahudi Helenis” (or Hellenized Jews) for Ἑλληνιστὰι.

This article discusses the genesis and nature of Vulgate, the most important work of St Jerome, and its current status in the Catholic Church at the margins of Pope Francis’ Apostolic Letter ...Scripturae Sacrae affectus (30 September 2020). First, the main guiding lines of Pope Francis’ document are shown, and then the need for Christological hermeneutics and biblical studies based on it is emphasised. The Vulgate weakened the importance of the Septuagint in the Western Church due to its purpose and the circumstances of its creation. The next comments concern the reception of the Vulgate – from the initial objections to the decree of the Council of Trent (1546), which sanctioned its status in the Catholic Church. This situation lasted until the Second Vatican Council (1962–1965), which made a fundamental change in the view of the authority and authenticity of the work of St Jerome. Then, the comments on the Neo-Vulgate and the five critical editions of the Vulgate are presented. The article ends with comments on the current dilemmas of biblical translation. Catholic scholars, taking as their basis critical editions of the Hebrew Bible based on the Masoretic text, are faced with the question of whether and how to use in their translations the options adopted and recorded in the Vulgate.
Two late eighth-century Latin gospel books have recently been identified as witnesses to the pre-Vulgate text of the Gospel according to John. In this article, their text of Mark is analysed and ...shown also to contain significant Old Latin material notwithstanding their general affiliation to the Vulgate. VL 11A (Würzburg, Universitätsbibliothek M.p.th.f. 67) has an unaltered Old Latin portion between Mark 10:30 and 11:5 and earlier readings throughout the manuscript. There are a number of unique or poorly-attested variants, including de publico in 7:4 and cum omni sollicitudine in Mark 14:44 which may give some clues about the origin of the text. VL 9A (St Petersburg, National Library of Russia F.v.I.8) has a mixed text with a significant proportion of Old Latin readings in Mark 10-14. Some of these are only paralleled by VL 1 (Codex Bobiensis) and represent a very early Latin version. In certain introductions to direct speech, this is the only Latin witness which corresponds to the earliest Greek form of text. It is also suggested that the Durham Gospels (or a closely related manuscript) may have been used to adjust VL 9A towards the Vulgate. A critical apparatus is provided for Mark in each manuscript.

Beginning with an extensive contextual history, the authors reveal details of the fragments’ origin, their importation to England, and their subsequent journey to a waste pile in a bookbinder’s workshop, where they would be incorporated into the bindings of a four-volume edition of the works of Jean Gerson in the early sixteenth century. A full enquiry into the provenance of these host volumes sets out the possible routes from the bookbinder’s workshop to their final home in Bristol Central Library.
Using multi-spectral imaging to read the damaged sections of text, the authors also provide a full edition and translation of the narrative contained in the fragments.
Resumen En este escrito se muestran resultados de pesquisa de una experiencia de iniciación a la investigación de un grupo de futuros profesores de Matemática, en la búsqueda de regularidades en ...manuales escolares de escuelas primarias de Buenos Aires (1967-1987). Las conclusiones del trabajo indican que durante el período mencionado se ha vehiculizado, mediante los manuales, una “vulgata escolar”, con una singular inclusión de las temáticas referidas a la teoría de conjuntos, mediante la cual se inició a los niños en el sistema de numeración y en el estudio de las operaciones aritméticas.
Abstract This paper shows research results of an experience of initiation to the research of a group of future teachers of mathematics, in the search for regularities in school manuals of primary schools of Buenos Aires (1967-1987). The conclusions of the work indicate that during the aforementioned period a “school vulgate” has been vehiculized through the manuals, with a unique inclusion of the topics related to set theory, through which children were initiated in the numbering system and in the study of arithmetic operations.
Resumo Este artigo mostra os resultados de uma experiência de iniciação à pesquisa de um grupo de futuros professores de Matemática, na busca de regularidades nos manuais escolares das escolas primárias de Buenos Aires (1967-1987). As conclusões do trabalho indicam que, durante o período mencionado, foi transmitida através dos manuais uma “vulgata escolar”, com uma inclusão única dos tópicos relacionados à teoria dos conjuntos, através dos quais as crianças foram iniciadas no sistema de numeração e no estudo de operações aritméticas.
Résumé Cet article présente les résultats d'une expérience d'initiation à la recherche d'un groupe de futurs professeurs de mathématiques, à la recherche de régularités dans les manuels scolaires des écoles primaires de Buenos Aires (1967-1987). Les conclusions du travail indiquent qu’au cours de la période susmentionnée, une “vulgate scolaire” a été véhiculée à travers les manuels, avec une inclusion unique des sujets liés à la théorie des ensembles, à travers lesquels les enfants ont été initiés dans le système de numérotation et dans l’étude des opérations arithmétiques.
The title σωτήρ, ‘saviour’, is bestowed on Christ and God in the New Testament and rendered in the Latin translations by conseruator, saluificator, salutificator, salutaris and saluator. Although ...these terms convey the same meaning, they are not interchangeable: this study argues that conseruator, which is the most frequent word for saviour on imperial coins, is rarely attested in the Latin versions because of its association with the imperial cult. The predominant translation, saluator, was coined as an alternative rendering to the other words which had religious and political connotations.
This article offers yet another opinion concerning the 18th-century controversy surrounding St. Jerome’s level of knowledge of Hebrew and his Old Testament translation from the Hebrew truth (ex ...Hebraica veritate). Assurances that Jerome’s Latin rendition is based directly on the Hebrew biblical books made by the monk himself and by his contemporaries are widely challenged. Jerome’s testimony is not entirely credible as he tended to confabulate and prevaricate. Having retraced this dispute about the Stridon-born scholar, the authors of this article subject verse 8:15 of the Book of Deuteronomy to a thorough analysis. It is a peculiar and important fragment for the ongoing discussion due to the appearance of the Hebrew word צִמָּאוֹן . In the Greek version (LXX), it had been translated as δίψα (“dry land”). What is crucial here is the fact that a similar form, διψάς, exists in the Greek language. It is a term used for a venomous snake. Potentially mistaking “dry land” for a “snake” in the Hebrew language is not possible. That is why in Jerome’s translation of the Bible from the Hebrew truth such an error should not have occurred. Meanwhile, we can find exactly that mistake in the scholar’s rendition. In his Latin translation Jerome introduced the dipsas snake in lieu of the Hebrew צִמָּאוֹן (“dry land”). This article aims to explain why, in this very spot, the translator departed from the Hebrew original.
