In recent years consumers' concerns regarding the environmental impact of food production has significantly increased, also due to food sustainability, food safety and food security issues. A number ...of certification systems for environmental-friendly products have been created e.g. water-saving labels and fishery sustainable labels. Among various environmental issues, the protection of biodiversity has recently gained popularity both in public opinion and in scientific debate. This paper describes the results of a Choice Experiment on wine consumers to estimate their willingness to pay for biodiversity conservation practices in vineyards. The survey was conducted by direct interviews at a wine tasting event in an Italian winery located at Montefano (Marche). The results show that consumers are willing to pay a premium price for wine certification that takes into account biodiversity not only for medium-high price wines, but also for low-price wines. Finally, quality of wine and organic certification remain important attributes in wine purchasing choices related to expensive wines.

The purpose of this investigation, underpinned by resource-based theory, involves unpacking the complexity of coopetition activities (interplay between cooperation and competition) among family-owned ...firms. The methods involve 20 field interviews and statistical analysis of 302 family-owned wine producers in the United States. Principal findings establish the non-linear (inverted U-shaped) nature of the coopetition-performance relationship within family-owned firms. Furthermore, competitive intensity negatively moderated the non-linear relationship between coopetition and company performance and a positive moderation effect existed from a competitor orientation. Additionally, unique insights illustrate the importance of utilising social capital in building relationships with trustworthy and complementary partners within and across clusters to enhance the performance consequences of firms’ product-market strategies; that is, both in their domestic market and internationally. The non-linear coopetition-performance relationship suggests decision-makers should not engage in too little or too much coopetition and have an exit strategy if things do not work out as planned.

Global growth in wine tourism mirrors that of wine consumption and rural tourism. Existing research reveals that wine tourists look for dining, shopping, and cultural and recreational activities ...along with authentic (e.g. reflecting local elements, unique events) products and experiences. This suggests the importance of hedonic and experiential consumption theories, which have been recently referenced in wine tourism literature. The present study proposes utilization of pertinent constructs of the experience economy model to explain the experiential nature of wine tourism. Evidence from wine tourism literature in support of this proposition is presented. This proposed framework advances the emergent theory in experiential consumption and wine tourism with a comprehensive approach that may be applied to wine tourism geographies in varying stages of development. Consequently, this examination of these associations promises new theoretical directions for wine tourism and contemporary applications for managers.

Today, depending on topic, goal and budget, all kinds of sampling methods are being used, in order to collect consumer data for research in the wine business. However, it is questionable which survey ...method is able to generate data that does represent the entire population. A representative face-to-face survey with 2000 respondents and a telephone survey with 1000 respondents were compared with two online surveys, one based on quota sampling (2000) and the other on snowball sampling (3000) using identical questions. Due to the sampling method, three of the surveys were representative of the socio-demographic structure of the German population in terms of six demographic variables that were selected for the quota sampling. The online survey (based on the snowball sample) had large biases concerning representativeness. Regarding the behavioural characteristics of consumers, the face-to-face data delivered the best results, followed by the telephone interviews and finally the online quota survey. Face-to-face surveys still deliver the most representative results. Telephone surveys may provide a good alternative, but we would advise use of a larger sample. The online quota survey needs to be corrected, while in the case of snowball sampling, one should relinquish representativeness.

Technical improvements in the sustainability of wine making will likely proceed thorough a progressive refinement of processing strategies without substantial discontinuities. The new varieties ...obtained through interspecific crossings represent a new technological paradigm with remarkable effects on cropping conditions. Indeed, vineyards planted with these new varieties require few treatments and result in a dramatic reduction in the pesticide use, production costs and carbon footprint. Wine consumption scholars should closely examine how the media will communicate these varieties to the general public, as we anticipate that this will influence consumers' perception of risk and, in turn, directly affect the market.

The growing presence of Sicilian sustainable wine has pushed the research group to investigate and analyse the consumers' behaviour and their potential willingness to pay a premium price for the wine ...obtained through sustainable production processes. The analysis of the consumer's behaviour towards the wine made with sustainable production methods is carried out in order to provide potentially useful indications to Italian and in particular Sicilian wine enterprises regarding the production and marketing strategies to undertake in a future perspective. This study shows the result of an empirical investigation on the consumption of sustainable wine in Sicily. Through the Ordered (demographic profile, preference and attitudes), which influence the consumers' choices regarding sustainable wine. The assessment, based on the submission of a questionnaire, has highlighted the willingness to pay a premium price on the part of the 546 consumers interviewed. The study points out that the knowledge of sustainable production methods significantly influences the decision to support a premium price for wine consumption. This attests to the fact that a more attentive and informed consumer is ready to pay more for products obtained according to the principles of environmental sustainability.

The comparison by which the Chorus of Satyrs in Euripides’ C
469–471 illustrates its wish to participate in the blinding of the Cyclops is regarded as difficult in research on the play, due to the ...ambiguous expression ὥσπερ ἐκ σπονδῆς θεοῦ (469). There is no consensus either on the question of how the reference to libation is to be understood, nor on whether the transmitted phrasing is correct at all. In the present paper I attempt to show that doubts over the transmission are unfounded and that attempts to refer the comparison not to libation but to the ritual use of water for handwashing at sacrifice are not persuasive. Rather, Euripides in this passage is engaging with the theme of libation on several levels of meaning: when we pay close attention to the context, cult-specific associations and literary applications of libation as a motif in Homer and Aristophanes, the words of the satyrs can be read, firstly, as a metaphorical reference to the two main actions in Odysseus’ plan for revenge, and secondly as a subtle allusion to the use of libation and spit-roasting in sacrificial ritual.
Wine tourism is a relatively fledgling industry sector facing a number of important economic development issues. One such issue is the industry's ability to foster a sustainable revenue base for ...small and medium wineries. Winery visitation is a significant concern and in this paper is defined as the visitor's intention to pay a first or return visit to a winery. The purpose of this exploratory study is to compare specific factors that may influence wine tourists' intentions to visit or revisit a winery or wine region in North Carolina. A theoretical model of core and supplementary services is examined to see which of a number of factors are most influential in decisions to visit a winery and to determine the role of winescape and tourism services in promoting wine tourism. The importance of customer service was found to be the primary predictor of intentions for repeat visitation.
•Expanded “winescape” to include additional elements such as customer service.•Good customer service is important to intentions to visit or revisit a winery in NC.•Good customer service is important to intentions to buy NC wine in the future.
