This paper proposes a social media content mining framework that consists of seven phases. The framework was tested empirically during the FIFA World Cup 2014 at Curitiba (Brazil) as one of the main host city destinations. The research focused on the mining of Twitter content with tourist services ontology (hospitality, food and beverages, and transportation). In total, 58,686 valid messages were collected, analyzed, and associated with an application ontology. Content analysis demonstrated an accurate real-time reflection of tourism services. The framework is effective to collect relevant content and identify popular topics in social media toward strategic and operational tourism management.

In this article an approach for the analysis and prediction of international soccer match results is proposed. It is based on a regularized Poisson regression model that includes various potentially ...influential covariates describing the national teams’ success in previous FIFA World Cups. Additionally, within the generalized linear model (GLM) framework, also differences of team-specific effects are incorporated. In order to achieve variable selection and shrinkage, we use tailored Lasso approaches. Based on preceding FIFA World Cups, two models for the prediction of the FIFA World Cup 2014 are fitted and investigated. Based on the model estimates, the FIFA World Cup 2014 is simulated repeatedly and winning probabilities are obtained for all teams. Both models favor the actual FIFA World Champion Germany.

This article explores why, on this occasion, football has proved a more effective tool than when it was employed by Presidents Gaviria (in 1993–1994) and Pastrana (in 2001). As well as analysing how Santos has appropriated football figures and discourses, consideration will be given to how the selección has become a contested symbol involving other political actors.

Summary Background Health threats during mass gatherings, such as the FIFA world cup 2014 differ from traditional health risks. The influence of event type, demographics of attendees and ...environmental conditions are still not fully understood. Methods An observational, prospective case-control survey conducted at the Frankfurt international airport in Germany on 544 travelers to the FIFA world cup 2014 and 432 regular travelers to Brazil departing after the end of the world cup. Results Travelers to the FIFA world cup 2014 were predominantly male whereas the gender distribution in the control group was more balanced. The majority in both groups obtained insect bites and sunburns as environmental risk factors. Every third traveler suffered from diarrheal complaints in both groups, whereas the proportion of travelers with flu-like symptoms was higher in the case group. Travelers to the FIFA world cup 2014 indicated alcohol intake and sexual contacts outside of a relationship more frequently than travelers in the control group. Conclusions The additional health risks of travelers to sporting events as the FIFA world cup 2014 should be addressed in addition to traditional health threats in pre-travel counseling for the Summer Olympic Games 2016 in Brazil.

Este artigo procura, por meio de uma análise discursiva, verificar quais os efeitos de sentido em quatro capas de jornais brasileiros após o Brasil 1 x 7 Alemanha, na Copa do Mundo Fifa 2014. ...Considerada traumática, a derrota foi representada de forma recorrente por imagens de pessoas chorando no estádio e fora dele. Nas quatro capas selecionadas, a fotografia aparece como um dos principais recursos discursivos – daí buscarmos discutir o significado das lágrimas nas narrativas que se seguiram ao fiasco em campo.
Purpose: Tactical analyses to distinguish between football teams that were more or less successful have been conducted up to now only by means of linear methods (like discriminant analysis). ...Concerning the non-linear relationships between performance related conditions, performance and success in sports games, a non-linear method could be more appropriate.
Methods & Results: Therefore, all knockout matches played during FIFA World Cup 2014 were analysed using tactical metrics. Results lead to 4 different dimensions (Transition play, Creating scoring opportunities, Defense and Scoring) from which especially the latter was essential to differentiate between winners, drawers and losers. Linear discriminant analysis identified 43.30% of the cases correctly whereas a non-linear artificial neural network (ANN) lead to a successful classification of 57.85% all together.
Conclusion: Considering that the differences concerning the tactical behaviour between more and less successful teams were small due to the homogeneous level of performance, the results of the discrimination by means of artificial neural networks indicate non-linear to be more adequate compared to linear methods for future analyses of sports games.
Practical Implications: For sport scientists: The results of our study indicate a superior classification by means of the non-linear model of Artificial Neural Networks compared to the linear model of Discriminant Analysis. Therefore, it is suggested that these kind of analyses may be suited better to model the complex relations between performance indicators and match success in sports games.
For sport practitioners: It is shown that the behaviour during scoring is by far most important for differentiating between more or less successful teams in FIFA World Cup 2014. Different teams used different playing styles, that were equally successful, to create scoring opportunities. But there is no way around a good ratio between goals and scoring opportunities. This implies that either successful teams take shots only from situations that are more promising or they are more successful in scoring in equally promising opportunities.
Olympic Games Rio 2016 and World Cup 2014: A Comparative Analysis between
Domestic and International Tourist Demand. The present study aimed to investigate the tourist demand of the Rio 2016 Olympic ...Games and the 2014 World Cup, and to analyze in a comparative way the profile, the travel habits and the perception of impacts in the host destination. For purpose, a primary, quantitative, face-to-face research was conducted during the two mega-events (in August 2016 and July 2014, respectively). The sample collected was 2678 domestic tourists and 872 international tourists during the 2014 World Cup and 399 domestic tourists 417 international tourists during the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. The data points to many similarities and differences between these groups surveyed. It is observed in the tourist demand of the Olympic Games, a greater interaction with the host city and the surrounding destinations, considering even a longer stay, both for the domestic and international tourist, compared to those of the World Cup. It is perceived that the fact
that the event happens in a single destination, favors this experience and even for greater interaction with different cultures, given the positive perception of some intangible legacies that are difficult to measure, such as cultural Exchange and joy of the people. The results of this study can be used in a strategic way, by future destinations for sports mega-events, as well as by public and private managers and researchers who study the subject matter
El objetivo de este estudio es investigar la demanda turística de los Juegos Olímpicos
Rio 2016 y de la Copa del Mundo 2014, y analizar de forma comparativa el perfil, los hábitos de viaje y la percepción de los impactos en el destino sede. Se realizó una investigación cuantitativa durante el período de los dos mega eventos (agosto de 2016 y julio de 2014, respectivamente). La muestra recolectada fue de 2678 turistas domésticos y 872 turistas internacionales durante la Copa del Mundo 2014 y 399 turistas domésticos más 417 turistas internacionales durante los Juegos Olímpicos Rio 2016. Los datos Indican semejanzas y diferencias entre los grupos investigados. Se observa en la demanda turística de los Juegos Olímpicos una mayor interacción con la ciudad sede y los destinos de alrededor, teniendo incluso un mayor tiempo de permanencia, tanto en lo que respecta al turista doméstico como internacional, en comparación con la Copa del Mundo. Se percibe que el hecho de
que el evento suceda en un único destino sede favorece esta experiencia y una mayor interacción con las diferentes culturas, considerando la percepción positiva de algunos legados intangibles y de difícil medición como el intercambio cultural y la alegría del pueblo. Factors Influencing the Support of Residents towards Mega Events: A study of FIFA World Cup 2014 in (Natal / RN / Brazil). This study aims to make a contribution to the popular knowledge on the mega ...events in Brazil. This is a frequent theme of interest because of the impact generated by mega events and the big gap existing in the specific tourism literature. The main objective was to investigate the factors influencing the support of the residents toward mega events. There has been identified a validated theoretical model that can be considered the basis for the empirical research with emphasis in Gursoy & Kendall (2006) and Nunkoo & Ramikisson (2011). The residents of Natal / RN, one of the host cities of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, have been chosen as the study universe. A survey was made using 400 questionnaires respecting the urban conglomerates and covering distinctive profiles of the society in focus. Among the eleven (11) tested hypotheses, 7 (seven) were validated and 4 (four) denied. This study finds the model's validity and suggests a dependence of the theoretical vector "trust", "perceived benefits" and "support".
El presente estudio intenta realizar un análisis cuyo objetivo es el posicionamiento popular del mega evento FIFA World Cup 2014 a ser realizado en Brasil. Un tema recurrente en la actualidad debido al impacto generado por los mega proyectos que rodean a estos acontecimientos y que muestra la ausencia de una perspectiva teórica específica de turismo. El objetivo fue investigar los factores que influyen el apoyo de los residentes a los mega eventos. Así, se buscaron modelos teóricos validados que sirvieran como base para la aplicación empírica del estudio, haciendo hincapié en Gursoy & Kendall (2006) y Nunkoo & Ramikisson (2011). El universo de la investigación fueron los residentes de la ciudad de Natal/RN, una de las ciudades sede de la Copa del Mundo FIFA 2014. Se aplicaron 400 cuestionarios respetando los conglomerados urbanos que abarcan distintos perfiles de la sociedad en foco. Entre las 11 (once) hipótesis testeadas, 7 (siete) fueron validadas y 4 (cuatro) consideradas falsas, enfatizando la confirmación de las hipótesis que componen el eje del modelo Social Exchange Theory y el factor "confianza en los gestores" con la correlación más representativa en "percepciones" y "apoyo". El presente estudio constata la validez del modelo teórico aplicado y sugiere que se profundicen los vectores "confianza", "percepción de beneficios" y "apoyo".

En cada mundo hay una manera diferente ...de ver la globalización. Dependiendo del mundo, la globalización puede ser vista como “fabulosa”, “perversa” o “humanitaria”. En este artículo, discutimos el punto de vista de estos tres tipos de mundo, juntamente con la cuestión de la democratización de los media, usando como objeto de reflexión la Copa del Mundo 2014, en Brasil.
No cenário brasileiro em que o país conquista o direito de sediar os dois maiores eventos de competição esportiva, a Copa do Mundo de Futebol em 2014 e as Olimpíadas em 2016, a relação da mídia com o ...esporte certamente será intensificada e, dessa forma, devemos estar atentos para não sermos apenas consumidores passivos das informações midiáticas. Portanto, na busca por compreensões sobre essa relação, objetivamos neste trabalho refletir sobre o agendamento midiático para a Copa do Mundo de Futebol de 2014, assim, a pesquisa investigou os telejornais Esporte Fantástico (Rede Record) e Esporte Espetacular (Rede Globo) durante o mês de abril de 2010.
