In this original study, Hilde Hasselgård discusses the use of adverbials in English, through examining examples found in everyday texts. Adverbials - clause elements that typically refer to ...circumstances of time, space, reason and manner - cover a range of meanings and can be placed at the beginning, in the middle or at the end of a sentence. The description of the frequency of meaning types and discussion of the reasons for selecting positions show that the use of adverbials differs across text types. Adverbial usage is often linked to the general build-up of a text and part of its content and purpose. In using real texts, Hasselgård identifies a challenge for the classification of adjuncts, and also highlights that some adjuncts have uses that extend into the textual and interpersonal domains, obscuring the traditional divisions between adjuncts, disjuncts and conjuncts.

The referential analysis of conditionals has recently been put forth as an alternative of the Kratzer-style restrictor analysis (Schein 2001, Schlenker 2004, among others). Under this analysis, ...conditional antecedents are definite descriptions of worlds/situations. This paper explores a widely accepted assumption of the referential analysis, namely that conditional antecedents refer to plural objects. I show that the singularity/plurality of conditional antecedents can correlate with whether the conditional expresses modal or adverbial quantification. I use this correlation to motivate an analysis where conditional antecedents are number-neutral by default, but can be forced to denote singular referents. This idea is formally implemented within the dynamic framework by Brasoveanu (2010).
În urma analizei aprofundate a sistemului gramatical coşerian, M. Minică constată că „pentru a descrie cât mai precis structurarea gramaticală, ca operaţie specifică sistemului gramatical al unei ...limbi, nu este suficientă numai descrierea elementelor implicate în structurarea gramaticală - tipurile de semnificate de limbă - şi a nivelurilor la care ea se realizează - straturile structurării gramaticale -, ci este nevoie şi de descrierea unor procedee de structurare gramaticală, care să arate felul în care structurarea gramaticală se produce, la fiecare dintre aceste niveluri" (p. 55), aducând în plus, faţă de exemplul coşerian, încă un element: „avem, ca procedeu de structurare gramaticală, nu numai combinarea unui lexem cu un instrumental, ci şi combinarea a două lexeme" (p. 56). În acest sens, M. Minică expune traseul teoretic „de fundamentare pe baze semantice a studiului faptelor gramaticale" (p. 64) asumat de D.D. Draşoveanu şi conchide: „faptele de gramatică sunt înţelese, de la bun început, ca fiind «autosemanteme», adică fapte cu semnificaţie proprie, de sine stătătoare, asemenea tuturor celorlalte fapte ale limbii" (p. 65). Pe cale de consecinţă, demersul draşovenian se concretizează, pornind de la distincţia din logică dintre noţiune şi notă, prin analiza modului de organizare a semnificatelor de limbă, mai exact prin analiza „ideii de cauzalitate" prezentă atât în substantivul cauzalitate, cât şi în conjuncţia fiindcă, şi demonstrează că „semnificaţiile instrumentale sunt, în fapt, organizări categoriale ale semnificaţiilor relaţionale, ceea ce implică structurarea lor ca valori ale semnificatului categorial, care va avea astfel cinci valori: substantival, adjectival, verbal, adverbial şi instrumental" (p. 75). Cu alte cuvinte, nu poţi defini relaţionalitatea adjectivului simultan şi la nivelul categoriei de cuvinte (ca sens-notă) şi la nivelul fiecărui individ particular al clasei descrise de această categorie (ca identitate de categorii gramaticale cu cele ale substantivului determinat)" (p. 92-93).

On étudie le statut grammatical des unités polylexicales ambivalentes dans le dictionnaire, en l’occurrence le Grand Robert. Comme l’ambivalence de ces unités pose problème quant à leur appartenance ...catégorielle, l’exemple est censé apporter, entre autres, des informations relatives à la classe grammaticale de l’unité que définit le dictionnaire. On met l’accent sur le ou les rôles que joue l’exemple dans la clarification du statut grammatical des unités polylexicales.
Adverbials of truth or reality such as really (en.), wirklich (de.), verdaderamente (sp.) are cross-linguistically assumed to be a rich source for intensifiers (degree words) as in: (i) Peter is ...really nice. The epistemic adverbial is reanalysed as a modifier of a predicative adjective in a syntactically ambiguous sentence as in (i). At the same time the emphasis on the truth of the proposition invites the inference that the property in question is amply present. This view on the emergence of intensifiers from adverbials of truth is challenged by the German intensifier echt ‘really, lit. genuine/real’ as in: (ii) Peter ist echt nett ‘Peter is really nice’. In contemporary German echt is very popular as an intensifier, a proposition modifier, a speech-act modifier and a response particle. However, a diachronic analysis of the use of echt as an adverbial in New High German reveals that the intensifier reading develops much earlier than the reading as a proposition modifier, i.e. an epistemic adverbial. The article offers a discussion of the development of echt which sheds a somewhat different light on the relation between intensifiers and epistemic adverbials, and it suggests a unified analysis of the uses of echt in contemporary German which supports Traugott’s view of grammaticalisation as also encompassing an extension of structural scope.
Within the current discussion on grammatical interfaces, the word-classes of adjective and adverb are of particular interest because they appear to be separated or joined in manifold ways at the ...level of word-class or syntax, with morphology playing a prominent role, especially in Romance. The volume provides typological and theoretical insights into the common or different usage of adjectives and adverbs in Romance. Diachronic change is discussed alongside with synchronic variation and the representation in grammar. The discussion turns out to be controversial, calling into question traditional assumptions such as the dogma of the invariability and the categorial status of the adverb.
This article investigates transitional points in interaction (junctures) where participants use the Swedish adverbial expression på något sätt ('in some way') in conversations about visual art. The ...conversations take place between 1) professionals in gallery settings and 2) lay people in group conversations. These participants have different knowledge about and different rights to assess art. Thus, how they position themselves epistemically in relation to the situational context and with the help of på något sätt is an additional aim of this study. The junctures scrutinized are found in places where på något sätt occurs as a turn extension, in responsive turns and in aborted turn constructional units (TCUs). At these junctures the participants deal with potential interactional troubles that can hamper the progressivity of talk and make repairing actions relevant. Deploying a multimodal interactional analysis, the study shows how the participants' observations can be modified and negotiated by på något sätt co-occurring with relevant embodied behavior, such as emblematic, iconic and other-oriented hand gestures. The participants in both data sets seek to establish a mutual understanding. They seem to agree more easily on observables when these are modified and delivered in relative terms. In this interactional work, where the participants need to organize their descriptive and evaluative actions in relation to each other, the adverbial expression på något sätt is a highly flexible resource.
