Akdenizde Leptostracanlar üzerine bilgi hayla yetersizdir. Türkiye'nin Ege denizi kıyılarında ve Kıbrıs'da yapılan
örnekleme çalışmaları sonucunda Nebalia strausi Risso, 1826 and N. kocatasiMoreira, ...Kocak and Katagan, 2007 türlerine
Knowledge about leptostracans from the Mediterranean Sea is still scarce. Examination of samples collected
from the Aegean Sea off Turkey and from Cyprus in the eastern Mediterranean Sea revealed new localities and range
extensions for 2 species of leptostracans: Nebalia strausi Risso, 1826, and N. kocatasiMoreira, Koçak, and Katagan, 2007.
The record of N. kocatasi is the first for Cyprus and for the Levantine Basin. Additional specimens (Nebalia sp. 1 and
Nebalia sp. 2) might prove to belong to 2 new species but the lack of material prevents their formal description.

The aim of the present study was to describe the mollusk syntaxon associated with Cystoseira barbata and Mytilus galloprovincialis facies, which are widely distributed along the coasts of the Sinop ...Peninsula, Turkey. Four stations were chosen for each facies at depths of 0.5-5 m, and a total of 32 seasonal samplings were performed with 4 replicate groups between February 2006 and November 2006. As a result of the qualitative and quantitative analyses, the C. barbata facies was shown to be represented by 14 species and 5807 specimens, whereas that of M. galloprovincialis was represented by 11 species and 18,407 specimens. Dominant species of the C. barbata facies were Mytilaster lineatus (56%), Tricolia pullus (18%), Rissoa splendida (12%), and Gibbula adansonii (7%). Dominant species of the M. galloprovincialis facies were, however, Mytilaster lineatus (63%) and Mytilus galloprovincialis (36%). Seasonal water parameters were also measured at the stations. Seasonal and spatial variations in the mollusk fauna were observed and showed the highest values in station 3 and during the summer period.

In this study, we established the presence of 25 aquatic beetle (Coleoptera: Helophoridae) species belonging to 5 subgenera from the Bayburt, Giresun, Gümüşhane, Ordu, and Trabzon provinces in the ...Black Sea region of Turkey. Specimens were collected between May 2007 and October 2007. Ten species are here recorded for the first time from the Black Sea region and 6 species are recorded for the first time in the research area. In addition, the habitats of these species found in the research area were given.

Predation is considered one of the distinct phenomena related to the interrelationships between species on the Earth. Predation is an interaction between organisms (animals) in which one organism ...(predator) captures and feeds upon another (prey). Others consider predation as an interaction between two species in which one of them gains and the other loses. There are diverse predators living on the Earth, ranging in size from micro-creatures, like ostracods, to big mammals like lions and tigers. Of course, we, humans, think of these big cats as well as reptiles, like crocodiles and snakes, as typical predators. However, spiders, centipedes, most lizards and turtles, and frogs are also voracious predators. In general, predation is widespread not only in wildlife but also in marine environments where big fishes eat small fishes and other organisms of the sea. Some important questions arise to mind when discussing this subject: what is behind predation? Why some predators do not benefit from their prey after killing them? Are there genetic origins of this antagonism between organisms? Why some female organisms kill their males after completion of sex? How can we avoid predation? To answer these questions an excellent group of experts working on this phenomenon discuss the following main topics: What is behind predation in organisms? - Factors affecting predation in organisms - Predator-prey interaction - The distinct role of predation in keeping the environmental equilibrium - Examples of predation in the fossil record - Examples of predation in marine and non-marine organisms - Herbivory, carnivory, cannibalism, parasitoidism, and parasitism - Scavenging compared to predation - Future trends in this subject.

The third edition of The Ciliated Protozoa thoroughly documents the progress in our understanding of the evolutionary diversification of these widely distributed eukaryotic microorganisms. The ...Glossary is considerably revised and expanded, serving as an illustrated ‘subject index’ of more than 700 terms. An introduction to the phylum is followed by chapters on the 11 classes. The book also contains a major chapter entitled The Ciliate Taxa.

Nutrient recycling, habitat for plants and animals, flood control, and water supply are among the many beneficial services provided by aquatic ecosystems. In making decisions about human activities, ...such as draining a wetland for a housing development, it is essential to consider both the value of the development and the value of the ecosystem services that could be lost. Despite a growing recognition of the importance of ecosystem services, their value is often overlooked in environmental decision-making. This report identifies methods for assigning economic value to ecosystem services?even intangible ones?and calls for greater collaboration between ecologists and economists in such efforts.
The present work was aimed at determining the population structure, growth and mortality of Crucian carp (Carassius gibelio) population in Buldan Dam Lake, in the Gediz River basin. A total of 2325 ...specimens were caugth monthly by the trammel nets during September 1995-August 1996. The sex composition was 99.44% females and 0.56% males. Maximum age group was determined as VI. Fork lenght and total weight of the specimens ranged from 9.7 to 25.5 cm and from 23.6 to 269.1 g. The length-weight relationship was estimated as W=0.031L2.87 for all individuals. von Bertalanffy growth parameters were computed as L=31.66 cm, W=635.91 g, k=0.146 year-1 ve t0=- 2.166 year. The ratios of total mortality, natural mortality and fishing mortality were calculated as 0,632 year-1, 0,456 year-1 and 0,176 year-1, respectively.
The present study reports the occurrence of 2 amphipod species, Caprella andreae Mayer, 1890 and Podocerus chelonophilus Chevreux & Guerne, 1888, that appeared on the carapace of the loggerhead ...turtle Caretta caretta (Linnaeus, 1758) in the eastern Mediterranean Sea (Levantine Sea). The amphipod specimens were found on a male Caretta caretta captured during experimental bottom studies conducted off Samandağ, Hatay (the Turkish Mediterranean coast) on 7 April 2007. In addition, Caprella andreae Mayer 1890 was collected from the nets of fish cages off the Seferihisar (Aegean Sea) coast (38°11'32"N, 26°38'07"E). C. andreae is a first report for the amphipod fauna in Turkish seas.
