In recent years, bone tissue regeneration studies have led to a deeper knowledge of chemical and structural features of the best biomaterials to be used as replacements for lost bone structures, with ...the autologus bone still today the only graft material able to ostegenerate, osteinduct and/or osteoconduct. The difficulties of the small available amount of autologus bone, together with morbidity of a second surgical operation on the same patient, have been overcome using both synthetic and biologic substitute bones. The possibility of investigating morphometric characteristics of substitute bones makes it possible to evaluate the predictability of regenerative processes and, so far, a range of different methods have been used for the purpose. X-ray microtomography (micro-CT) is a miniaturized form of conventional tomography, able to analyze the internal structure of small objects, performing three-dimensional images with high spatial resolution (< 10 micron pixel size). For a correct analysis, samples need not be altered or treated in any way, as micro-CT is a non-invasive and non-destructive technique. It shows promising results in biomaterial studies and tissue engineering. This work shows the potential applications of this microtomographic technique by means of an in vitro analysis system, in characterizing morphometric features of human bone tissue, and contributes to the use of this technique in studies concerning biomaterials and bioscaffolds inserted in bone tissue.

BioTinkering als Making-Aktivität in der Biologie begeistert Schüler:innen für die Pflanzenwelt und kann den naturwissenschaftlichen Unterricht durch überfachliche, digitale, prozessbasierte und ...produktorientierte Projektarbeiten bereichern. Dieser Artikel stellt Making-Aktivitäten im Themenbereich Pflanzenbiologie vor und diskutiert deren Kompetenzorientierung im Rahmen des Schweizerischen Lehrplan 21. Da sich BioTinkering anhand verschiedener Bereiche konstituiert, kann damit eine Vielzahl von Kompetenzen geschult werden. Im Artikel werden zur Vermeidung von Missverständnissen aufgrund der Multidisziplinarität eingangs Begriffsklärungen gegeben. Darauf folgend stellen wir Vorteile und Herausforderungen in Form von drei Thesen vor. Diese beinhalten (1) den Bezug von BioTinkering zum traditionellen naturwissenschaftlichen Unterricht, (2) die Thematisierung der Komplexität und des Zeitbedarfs sowie (3) die Förderung überfachlicher Kompetenzen. Im Anschluss diskutieren wir die Entwicklung und Erprobung von BioTinkering-Aktivitäten durch das CreativeLabZ des Zürich-Basel Plant Science Centers und stellen einen Leitfaden zur Anleitung von BioTinkering-Aktivitäten vor. Die Evaluationsresultate zeigen, dass BioTinkering sowohl für Lehrpersonen als auch für Schüler:innen interessant und kompetenzerweiternd ist.
Die Eingliederung von Nichtgleichgewichtsprozessen in die Abfolge von Selbstassemblierungsverfahren wäre ein effektives Mittel zur Etablierung bioähnlicher hochfunktionalisierter hierarchischer ...Assemblierungen. Als eine neue Methode jenseits der Selbstassemblierung wurde die Nanoarchitektonik eingeführt, deren Ziel die Herstellung funktioneller Materialsysteme aus nanoskopischen Einheiten durch die methodische Zusammenführung der Nanotechnologie mit anderen wissenschaftlichen Disziplinen einschließlich der organischen Synthese, der supramolekularen Chemie, der Mikrofabrikation und von Bioprozessen ist. Die Nutzung von Nichtgleichgewichtsfaktoren in konventionellen Selbstassemblierungsprozessen wird auf der Grundlage von Beispielen zur gesteuerten Assemblierung, der Langmuir‐Blodgett‐Technologie und der schichtweisen Assemblierung diskutiert. Insbesondere werden Beispiele zur Herstellung hierarchischer funktioneller Strukturen mithilfe bioaktiver Komponenten wie Proteinen oder durch die Kombination von Biokomponenten mit zweidimensionalen Nanomaterialien beschrieben.
Hochrangige Organisationen, wie sie in biologischen Systemen vorzufinden sind, sind mit einfachen Selbstassemblierungsmethoden nicht zugänglich. Hierzu sind die Einführung von Nichtgleichgewichtsprozessen und die Harmonisierung mehrerer Vorgehensweisen erforderlich. Als eine neuartige Methode wurde die Nanoarchitektonik vorgeschlagen, die bioähnliche, hierarchisch organisierte Strukturen erschaffen kann.
