This tutorial presents a hands-on introduction to a new discrete choice modeling approach based on the behavioral notion of regret-minimization. This so-called Random Regret Minimization-approach ...(RRM) forms a counterpart of the Random Utility Maximization-approach (RUM) to discrete choice modeling, which has for decades dominated the field of choice modeling and adjacent fields such as transportation, marketing and environmental economics. Being as parsimonious as conventional RUM-models and compatible with popular software packages, the RRM-approach provides an alternative and appealing account of choice behavior. Rather than providing highly technical discussions as usually encountered in scholarly journals, this tutorial aims to allow readers to explore the RRM-approach and its potential and limitations hands-on and based on a detailed discussion of examples. This tutorial is written for students, scholars and practitioners who have a basic background in choice modeling in general and RUM-modeling in particular. It has been taken care of that all concepts and results should be clear to readers that do not have an advanced knowledge of econometrics.

The European Commission presented a strategy that would allow EU companies to compute their EU tax base under a single set of tax rules at the EU level and use a common formula to distribute this tax ...base across the individual Member States. Company Tax Reform and Formulary Apportionment in the European Union provides broad guidance for the EU in shaping a system of consolidated base taxation with formulary apportionment. It evaluates how the U.S. states and Canadian provinces have resolved the economic, political, and technical aspects of the formulary apportionment method. The book discusses the landscape for company tax reform in the European Union and illustrates how formulary apportionment might distribute the tax base across the Member States. It provides practical information on how to design an apportionment formula and discusses selected compliance and administrative issues. It analyzes how formulary apportionment might affect investment, employment, tax revenues, and tax competition in the European Union.

Higher education and research institutions are confronted with changing and sometimes contradictory claims from state, industry and society, today. They have to face growing volatility and an ...acceleration and internationalization of the knowledge process. This book undertakes to develop a sector specific theory of governance of the public research sector and applies it to the German research system. The book is the outcome of a large interdisciplinary project. It analyzes the reforms in the German research system from an integrated perspective of law, economics and social sciences. The case of Germany is compared to reforms in other European countries such as Austria, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. The study emphasizes an integrated approach considering the research function of universities as well as the non-university research sector. The focus is on the integration of external and internal governance. First, we pose the question how external competition and control mechanisms do influence internal governance of research institutions and universities and vice versa. Second, we discuss the consequences of these impacts on research. The book addresses scholars in the field of science and technology studies and research policy as well as actors responsible for establishing and implementing research policies. Managers of research institutions will find insights and guidelines for the strategic positioning of their institutions in a rapidly changing environment. Researchers in the field of governance may profit from the approaches to governance which are applied to the German research system in comparison to other research systems.

The dramatic increase in global trade confronts service firms with the challenge of adapting their services to the varying requirements of customers in different cultures. Jan H. Schumann focuses on ...three relationship marketing issues that are of relevance for both academics and practitioners the establishment of trusting customer relationships, customer co-production, and the effect of word-of-mouth referrals. The results of the study, conducted on banking customers in 11 countries, show that differences in cultural values impact consumers` behavior and cognitions. Overall, the findings from this doctoral study highlight the need for culture-specific relationship marketing in services that considers the values of specific target groups. The author outlines ways to cope with this challenge and derives implications for research and practice.

DATA ENGINEERING: Mining, Information, and Intelligence describes applied research aimed at the task of collecting data and distilling useful information from that data. Most of the work presented ...emanates from research completed through collaborations between Acxiom Corporation and its academic research partners under the aegis of the Acxiom Laboratory for Applied Research (ALAR). Chapters are roughly ordered to follow the logical sequence of the transformation of data from raw input data streams to refined information. Four discrete sections cover Data Integration and Information Quality, Grid Computing, Data Mining, and Visualization. Additionally, there are exercises at the end of each chapter. The primary audience for this book is the broad base of anyone interested in data engineering, whether from academia, market research firms, or business-intelligence companies. The volume is ideally suited for researchers, practitioners, and postgraduate students alike. With its focus on problems arising from industry rather than a basic research perspective, combined with its intelligent organization, extensive references, and subject and author indices, it can serve the academic, research, and industrial audiences.

Most of the project management books on the market are basically textbooks. They are dry to begin with, and don't focus on the practical advice that most people need to run their projects. Lessons in ...Project Management, Second Edition does not assume that you are a project manager building a nuclear reactor or sending a man to the moon. Instead, it focuses on the millions of people who manage normal, medium-to-large projects on an ongoing basis. Each case study in Lessons in Project Management contains an accessible, easy-to-read analysis of the challenges of real-world project management. Each problem is presented, then followed by an examination of the solution, written in easy-to-understand language. The format allows you to more easily relate to the book, since it brings into play a project scenario with practical project management lessons to be learned. You'll also recognize recurring characters who appear in multiple stories, and you'll start to develop some empathy for and interest in their struggles.

Purpose This paper seeks to identify and propose a standard approach for the selection and optimization of fuzzy sets used in fuzzy decisionmaking systems. Designmethodologyapproach The design was ...based on two principles selection and optimization. The selection methodology was based on the Fuzzimetric Arcs principle, which is an analogy of the trigonometric circle principle. This would allow an initial sinusoidal fuzzy set shape. Other shapes may also be selected using the described formula trapezoidal, triangular,, etc.. As the proposal methodology is based on the trigonometric circle, other trigonometric formulae can be applied. For example, linguistic hedges can be defined using standard trigonometric formulae. Regarding optimization, the initial fuzzy set selection was assumed to be of regular shape sinusoidal, trapezoidal or triangular. An irregular shape may be required by some systems. Hence, a genetic algorithm was proposed as a methodology to optimize the performance of fuzzy systems by mutating different regular shapes. Findings A simplified business decisionmaking application was described and the proposed selection methodology was explained in the form of an example. Currently, there is no standard for the selection of fuzzy sets as this is dependent on knowledge engineering and the type of application chosen. The proposed methodology offers an easytouse possible standard which all developersresearchers may adopt irrespective of their application field. Moreover, the proposed methodology may integrate well with objectoriented technology. Originalityvalue The paper presents standardization of the fuzzy sets selection and optimization technique used in any type of management information systems. This will aid all developers and researchers to enhance their technical communication. It would also enhance the simplicity and effectiveness of optimizing the performance of such systems.
This book provides the first unified treatment of logistics systems available to the field. There has been considerable growth in the logistics area and as a result, there is a need for a book that ...examines these developments as a systematic whole.
