Vocational Education and Training (VET) policies are paying increasing attention towards the need to develop quality career guidance processes. Career guidance plays an essential role in this ...challenge by enabling people to develop the career management skills that allow them to become aware of their full potential and to construct life projects that facilitate the emotional management of uncertainty and complexity, participating as responsible agents in their environment. After conducting a literature review on each of these key elements, we set out to identify best practices in VET as “building blocks” for the construction of an integrated career guidance plan in VET. This study adopts an approach based on qualitative methodology, specifically a documentary type of research has been carried out. The documents analysed correspond to 88 best practices identified in Andalusia (Spain). The analysis strategy used was a content analysis. For this purpose, a system of categories has been designed, from a deductive perspective, which has contributed to a systematic analysis of them. One of the first conclusions of the study is the uneven development o best practices in the different VET professional pathways. The practices carried out in the centres begin to incorporate different elements and thus facilitate the creation of a suitable context for the development of comprehensive career guidance plans in VET. The article closes by offering implications for the development of guidance in the education system (at VET level) and discusses lines of future research.
This article addresses the use of computer-assisted career guidance systems (CACGS) in career interventions. Major CACGS developed in the past decades were based on the trait-factor or ...person-environment fit approaches in their conceptualization and design. The strengths and limitations of these CACGS in addressing the career development needs of individuals are discussed. The Career Construction Theory (CCT) is a promising paradigm to guide the development of new generations of CACGS. The narrative tradition, career adaptability model, and life-design interventions of CCT offer rich conceptual and practical applications that could expand the scope and breadth of career exploration and identity construction through using CACGS. A digital system developed in Hong Kong called Infinity is a case-in-point of a CACGS where users could learn about career planning, engage in self and career construction through using the quantitative and qualitative assessment applications and gamified tools, take career planning actions over time, and communicate with their social supportive systems. Initial findings suggested that users of the system reported lesser decision-making difficulties, higher levels of decision clarity, and better understanding of what is career planning than non-users. Users from high academic achievement schools reported higher levels of career adaptability than their counterparts in schools of similar academic background. Users from low achievement schools reported higher intention to pursue government-supported universities than non-users from schools of similar background. Research and practice implications in schools and organizational settings are discussed.
The research was conducted with the aim of evaluating the implementation of the career guidance program at SMK Negeri 2 Salatiga based on context, input, process and product. This research is ...evaluative research with a qualitative descriptive approach. The data collection techniques used were interviews, observation and documentation studies. The analysis technique used in this research is the Miles & Hubberman qualitative analysis technique which includes data collection, data reduction, data display, and data verification. The validation test in this research was by using triangulation of sources and techniques. The results of this research show that: 1) context, high support from schools; goals are prepared in line with the school's vision and mission; 2) input, sufficient ratio of teachers to students, availability of budget for program implementation, programs and materials are prepared based on student and school needs, as well as availability of supporting infrastructure for the implementation of career guidance programs; 3) Process, procedures are implemented by adopting guidance and counseling services, evaluation and follow-up are not implemented enough, student involvement is good, the school community supports the implementation of career guidance and DUDI participates in program implementation. ABSTRACTCareer guidance counsellors’ competence requirements in Norwegian schools have been the subject of decades-long discussion. Practitioners, experts, and stakeholders have called for precise ...requirements and professionalized status for counsellors, but with little results. In the Finnish context, however, career guidance is more professionalized, and the counsellor competence requirements are defined by law. Why have the two systems developed differently? In this research, we used ‘historical institutionalism’ as our lens and compared the two developmental histories of the counsellor role and the reasoning behind these differentiating systems. By utilizing Toulmin’s model of argumentation, we analysed rationales in policy documents from ministries to expert groups to reveal how the policy rationales have formed the different statuses of the career counsellor profession in the 1950s, 1960s and 1990s. Norway and Finland saw the counsellor role similarly, but eventually, decisions on qualifications and competency were made from different perspectives.
Aim/Purpose: This study aims to investigate the enabling technologies and applications of computer-assisted career guidance (CACG) tools in the career planning activities of students. Background: The ...choice of a career is an extremely significant lifetime decision for any individual. Students often struggle with their career choices mainly due to the lack of awareness in career planning and development. Therefore, students require the support of career counselors for proper career decision-making. Unfortunately, adequate career counseling resources are not readily available within educational institutes. CACG tools offer a workable solution for overcoming this challenge. Methodology: A systematic literature review was conducted based on a standard guideline for the period of 2011 through 2023. Initially, a comprehensive review protocol was defined and evaluated. In conducting the review, nine electronic databases: Scopus, Web of Science, IEEE Xplore, ACM Digital Library, Science Direct, SpringerLink, Wiley Online, Emerald Insight, and Sage Journals were queried. Then search results were narrowed down to 46 scholarly articles by applying predefined selection criteria. Contribution: This review study contributes to assessing the status of the existing body of knowledge on implementing and applying CACG tools for career path planning within the education domain. Significantly, this study identified a set of underlying technologies used in implementing modern CACG tools as well as a distinct set of parameters associated with users that can be used as input for offering personalized career decision support. Further, specific needs of applying CACG tools at distinct educational stages were assessed. Study outcomes support future research works by unraveling potential research directions based on identified research gaps. Findings: The key findings of this study revealed experimentation with a wide range of enabling technologies and techniques in the implementation of CACG tools for students’ career path planning. Within these tools, a distinct set of parameters associated with students has been considered as input for offering personalized career decision support. Further, it was found that the use of CACG tools in career guidance differs across distinct educational stages. Recommendations for Practitioners: CACG has been extensively used within the education domain for providing career guidance services to different student populations. With technological advancements, CACG has evolved as a viable alternative to in-person career counseling, rather than primarily serving as a supplementary tool used by career counselors during in-person counseling. Therefore, it is recommended that educational institutes utilize CACG tools in situations where adequate in-person career counseling services are not possible. Recommendation for Researchers: Continuous technological advancements make it advisable for researchers to continue further experimentation employing emerging cutting-edge technologies for improving the functionalities of CACG tools used in education. Particularly significant are improvements in personalization capabilities and integrating user profiling techniques to enhance the effectiveness of the services offered by CACG tools. Impact on Society: Technology-assisted career counseling can play a vital role in fulfilling the career guidance requirements of various student populations. This study has affirmed the potential of using CACG as a viable alternative to in-person career counseling within educational institutes. Future Research: In future work, the scope of this study can be extended to other educational guidance domains such as academic advising, pedagogical resource recommendation, academic program and course recommendation, and college and university recommendation. Moreover, future research may investigate the application of CACG tools in the career guidance activities of vocational education.
