Purpose
This study aims to examine how case study research has been applied in the field of human resource development (HRD).
Design/methodology/approach
The authors examined HRD case study research ...by analyzing 118 refereed, empirical case study articles published between 2000 and 2020 in three Academy of HRD-sponsored journals.
Findings
Findings suggest that case studies have an established place in HRD research. The disciplinary convention has been exploratory case studies, which, to a greater extent, draw on single-case research designs. When examining the proportion of case study articles in relation to all empirical, peer-refereed publications in the journals, the authors found a slight decline in case study research publications in recent years. The results of our post hoc exploratory analysis indicate that HRD case study research that contributes to theory development by eliciting concepts and their relationships is likely to receive more scholarly attention than case studies that provide rich descriptions of the phenomenon. The results also suggest that it is rather case study’s contribution to theory than selected features of case study that attracts scholars’ attention.
Originality/value
The study identified several approaches to conducting case study research that have received less attention by HRD researchers. The authors encourage HRD researchers to expand their repertoire of case study approaches. The authors also provide recommendations addressing the issues of methodological self-awareness, rigor and transparency in case study research.
Leukocytoclastic vasculitis has been reported in the setting of COVID‐19 infection and post‐COVID‐19 vaccination. We report a case of IgA vasculitis (IgAV) post‐COVID‐19 vaccination, with ...immunoglobulin A (IgA) immune deposits in the skin and renal involvement. SARS‐CoV spike protein immunohistochemical staining was negative. IgAV with skin and renal involvement is a potential reaction to COVID‐19 vaccination.

AbstractThis case report presents two pedestrian passages underneath an urban expressway with a spacing of 0.5 m, which were constructed using rectangular pipe jacking technology in Nanjing, China. ...To better understand the field performance and the geoenvironmental impacts of rectangular pipe jacking technology, real-time monitoring was conducted with the installation of measurement devices at 43 measurement points. These points were set up to measure lateral earth pressure, excess pore water pressure, soil lateral displacement, and ground surface settlement. By analyzing field measurement data and operational parameters, this study documents operational parameters throughout the jacking process of two successively constructed tunnels and presents geoenvironmental impacts of the rectangular pipe jacking technology. In this process, the study finds that large ground settlements around the jacking shaft were due to the strong soil-carrying effect of the rectangular pipe jacking technology.
AbstractThis study develops a safety climate (SC) measurement scale for building projects in Pakistan. In addition, it attempts to validate an existing SC scale in the cross-cultural environment of a ...developing country and highlights the implications of its cross-validation. The SC data collected from 40 under-construction multistorey building projects were split into calibration and validation samples for conducting the exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, respectively. This resulted in a 24-item SC scale comprised of four factors: management commitment and employees’ involvement in health and safety (MC&EI); safety enforcement and promotion (SE&P); applicability of safety rules and safe work practices (SR&WP); and safety consciousness and responsibility (SC&R). The factor structure obtained through structural equation modeling (SEM) achieved a desirable goodness-of-fit, composite reliability, and construct validity. The SE&P was discovered as one of the most influential SC factors, whereas SR&WP was detected as the most overlooked factor. A correlation was observed among the error variables of SE&P and SR&WP factors, thus necessitating the development of synergy in the safety enhancement efforts of these two factors. The study has reinforced the body of knowledge by highlighting the consequences of cross-validation in a developing country, and unveiling the deviations in the existing SC factor structure such as the discovery of SE&P as a novel SC factor. The study concludes that existing SC scales cannot be generalized across countries and regions without cultural adjustments. The designed SC scale and the study’s findings would help the key stakeholders to measure the SC and streamline their safety enhancement strategies on building projects in Pakistan.
The distinct definition of accordance in the perceived barriers and enablers for sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) policy implementation has been the subject of various research studies, but ...a distinct focus on the textile sector has been the object of limited previous attention. However, it has been found that it affects the approach to developments in company approaches to sustainable supply chain management within that industry. This article presents the results of an in-depth comparative case study analysis, drawing on 23 interviews with managers of 10 companies from the textile industry. The analysis demonstrates that specific modes of collaboration can both enable an effective SSCM and diminish barriers for policy implementation. The width and depth varies between a collaborative management approach for an effective internal SSCM versus industry collaboration and buyer supplier collaboration to address external barriers and enablers.
Highlights • There is little evidence about the effectiveness of recruitment and retention interventions. • Single recruitment and retention interventions have little impact; packages are more ...effective. • Successfulness of recruitment and retention interventions is dependent on their context-sensitivity. • Good practices in R&R include having political and executive commitment.

•The study focused on value capture processes in open innovation projects between firms and radical circles.•Qualitative analysis of collaborations activated by Slow Food, Memphis, and Free Software ...Foundation.•The data collection process lasts about six years, from 2014 until 2019 and relies on multiple sources.•A theoretical framing on the role of radical circles for value creation and capture processes was proposed.•After collaborating with radical circles, firms capture value through developing internal assets and new business models.
Despite the wealth of research on open innovation, the mechanisms that enable capturing value through adopting an open innovation approach remain largely unexplored. In this study, we focus on open innovation processes among firms and radical circles and shed light on the related value capture mechanisms. We rely on a detailed qualitative case analysis of collaborations between firms and three radical circles (i.e., Slow Food, Memphis, and the Free Software Foundation). Our case studies highlight that the firms captured value from collaborating with these radical circles through developing internal assets (reputational, organizational, intellectual and human, and technological) and new business models. Starting from these insights, the study offers several contributions to open innovation research as well as interesting avenues for future inquiry into this topic.

PurposeThis article aims to understand the role of intermediaries that manage innovation challenges in the healthcare scenario. More specifically, it explores the role of digital platforms in ...addressing data challenges and fostering data-driven innovation in the health sector.Design/methodology/approachFor exploring the role of platforms, the authors propose a theoretical model based on the platform’s dynamic capabilities, assuming that, because of their set of capabilities, platforms may trigger innovation practices in actor interactions. To corroborate the theoretical framework, the authors present a detailed in-depth case study analysis of Apheris, an innovative data-driven digital platform operating in the healthcare scenario.FindingsThe paper finds that the innovative data-driven digital platform can be used to revolutionize established practices in the health sector (a) accelerating research and innovation; (b) overcoming challenges related to healthcare data. The case study demonstrates how data and intellectual property sharing can be privacy-compliant and enable new capabilities.Originality/valueThe paper attempts to fill the gap between the use of the data-driven digital platform and the critical innovation practices in the healthcare industry.
AbstractThis paper investigates a basement excavation adjacent to running metro tunnels and underground pipelines in Shanghai soft soil. The zoned excavation technique was adopted to control the ...deformations caused by excavation. The excavation site was divided into three parts and successively constructed in the order of Zones A, B, and C with the bottom-up method. The field data of retaining walls, struts, columns, surrounding ground, pipelines, and metro tunnels were monitored and analyzed in terms of lateral and vertical deformations throughout the whole construction process. The data indicates that the wall deflection and column heave in Zones B and C were smaller than those in Zone A. The ground surface settlements near the metro lines were effectively reduced by the zoned excavation technique. The deformations of the metro tunnels and pipelines were well controlled within the acceptable limits. A general relation between wall deflection and the excavation area was also proposed based on this and 15 similar cases.
Public accountability may involve dysfunction. However, few empirical studies explain when and how external accountability pressure and subsequent intraorganizational dynamics cause dysfunctions. To ...bridge this gap, using a case study method, we examined Japan’s public procurement after a series of scandals, focusing on the procurers’ cognition and behavior. First, we found that an administrative unit in a ministry leverages external pressure to enhance its power within the organization. Second, we identified bias toward procedural accountability rather than product accountability. Third, we noted the paradox that the excessive pursuit of procedural accountability undermines not only product accountability, but also procedural accountability.
