Abstract
Gregor Mendel is generally presented as the ‘ignored and solitary founder of genetics’. This Moravian friar would have worked in strict isolation on the heredity of peas in the garden of his ...monastery, and his experiments would have been ignored by his contemporaries, before being ‘rediscovered’ independently by three botanists in 1900, 34 years after their publication. Historians have contributed to replace the genesis of Mendel’s work in the context of his time, questioning the mythical image that prevailed in academic circles and the public perception. This paper recalls that Mendel benefitted from a very favourable context for the development of his experiments at St Thomas Monastery in Brno and was not isolated from the scientific community of his time. Although the notions on which his work was based were already present in scientific publications, this does not diminish the importance of Mendel’s contribution to the development of modern biology. We provide a detailed analysis of the results of his experiments on the development of hybrid plants that he presented in two lectures at the Brno Society of Natural History in 1865, demonstrating that beyond his major contribution to the foundation of genetics, Mendel was one of the pioneers of systems biology.

During a crucial period in opera's development as a genre and as a business, the flamboyantly libertine Spanish aristocrat Gaspar de Haro y Guzmán (1629-87), Marqués de Heliche and del Carpio, ...influenced operatic practices and productions for both Italian and Hispanic operas. A voracious collector of books and antiquities and famed connoisseur of visual art, the marqués financed operas in both Spain and Italy and further shaped them through his ideas, energy, and politics. His legacy also brought forth the first operas of the Americas, as posthumous revivals of the operatic genres he nurtured appeared in the Americas less than fifteen years after his death. In this book, author Louise K. Stein follows the trajectory of this first operatic producer to have shaped opera in two different worlds--Europe and the Americas--and in doing so, advances our musical and historical understanding of seventeenth- and early eighteenth-century opera and cultural encounter. Each chapter focuses on different productions spearheaded by the Marqués in Madrid, Rome, and Naples during his lifetime, with the final chapter considering how his influence continued in operatic productions in Lima, Mexico City, and other regions of New Spain after his death. Alongside this portrait of the distinguish patron of the arts, Stein shows how conventions of musical dramaturgy for both private and commercial opera were developed within a consistent politics of production across the far-flung administrative centers of the Spanish empire in the years 1650-1730. She reveals the place of opera within the siglo de oro (Golden Age) of Hispanic theatre and delves deeply into how the Marqués became the principal patron of Alessandro Scarlatti in Italy after his time in Rome, sparking a reliable production system for Italian opera in Naples. Stein also addresses gendered performance--how beliefs about female fertility conditioned listeners and shaped the operatic genre--and advances the concept of the ""womanly voice"" in the first extant Hispanic operas, the Italian operas produced in Naples between 1683 and 1687, and the first operas of the Americas from 1701 to 1730.

Writing in an anniversary issue journal is an honor and therefore an endless courage. We know where honor comes from, we build it; the courage is ours in front of readers of this issue, but also of ...similar issues - many decades to come. The chosen theme doesn’t represent such an advatage for us because it is also the fruit of a courageous act, with clear evidence that its thinking doesn’t hold the same fully viable arguments now

The article is about the public celebrations for the independence of Brazil that have taken place in Bahia since July 2, 1823, when the Portuguese troops were forced out of the country by the Bay of ...All Saints. It is a civic-popular calendar that has as its high point the parade through the streets of Salvador, the Bahian capital, and in other cities of the Recôncavo, with students, representatives of native communities, social movements, political parties, capoeiristas, sambistas, military corporations, cultural associations and religious brotherhoods. The main elements of the parade are two sculptures, the Caboclos. The Caboclo is the representation of a native pointing a spear and crushing a dragon with his feet, which would be the colonial submission. The Cabocla, on the other hand, is the representation of Catarina Paraguassú, the Tupinambá native who married the Portuguese explorer Diogo Alvares Correia, during the colonial period. She parades heavily adorned and carrying the flags of Bahia and Brazil. Both are also venerated in candomblé, a religion of African origin. The objective of the text is to highlight the historical and cultural dynamics that, intertwined in this national mythology, continue to be fundamental to analyze political projects, popular aspirations and social tensions that, throughout two hundred years, mark the trajectory of independent Brazil. The sources that support this text are official documents, press, police correspondence, chroniclers, and artists.
