The purpose of this study was to examine the correlation between perceived teacher autonomy support (PAS) and student engagement (SE), as well as the mediating role of learning motivation (LM) and ...the moderating role of the class climate (CC) among 1517 college students in Chinese universities. Survey questionnaires were used in gathering data, and the findings revealed that: (1) PAS had a significant positive impact on SE (B=0.966, p<0.001); (2) LM partially mediated the association between PAS and SE (B=0.084, p<0.001); (3) CC moderated the relation between PAS and LM (B=1.895, p<0.001); more specifically, favorable CC strengthened the effect of PAS on LM among college students. From the findings, this study contributes to a better comprehension of the influence of PAS on SE among Chinese college students. It is suggested higher education institutions and teachers should pay attention to college students' PAS, LM, and CC to improve college students' engagement.
Sleep is fundamental in daily functioning, especially in teenagers who are in a critical period of their development. Accordingly, a deteriorated sleep, that is increasingly common in this age group, ...has been related to poorer school performance. The goal of this cross-sectional study was to collect up-to-date sleep data in preteens, and to examine their relation with two important dimensions for school achievement, which are self-reported attention and class climate at school.
Data were collected at school in 1151 preteens (597 boys; 554 girls; 11.31 ± 0.62 years old) between June 2021 and March 2022. Self-completion questionnaires evaluated attention and class climate. Sleep questionnaires assessed sleep habits for weekdays and weekends, separately.
Preteens reported sleeping 8 h and 39 min during weekdays and 9 h and 32 min during weekends. All sleep measures showed a significant change between weekdays and weekends, leading to a longer and better sleep on weekends, likely to compensate for insufficient sleep during the week. In addition, girls woke-up later and spent more time in bed than boys during weekends. Importantly, during weekdays, correlational analysis showed a relationship between sleep measures and both self-reported attention and class climate scores, suggesting that longer and better sleep was related to better attention and perceived class climate at school.
This study depicted up-to-date sleep habits in preteens, depending on the day of the week and the gender, and highlighted their relation to two potential contributors of academic success, namely attention and class climate.
•In the 2020's, middle school preteens report having less than 9 h of sleep during weekdays.•Girls wake-up later and spend more time in bed than boys during weekends.•Longer and better sleep is associated with better self-reported attention at school.•Longer and better sleep is related to higher perceived class climate at school.

Although studies on, and reviews of, class climate have flourished in the past decade, little is known about how student perceptions of the learning environment are associated with student ...psychosocial beliefs and outcomes at the tertiary level. The purpose of this paper is to synthesise the current body of literature and describe how the class climate area has developed over time, with a particular focus on tertiary climate studies and their underrepresentation in learning environments research. Throughout this review, it will be argued that reflection on five decades of research into learning environments reveals a number of gaps, such as the lack of attempts to conceptualise and evaluate the tertiary climate as a unique learning context, the under-representation of qualitative studies in the field, and the lack of studies that explored the potential influences of the tertiary climate on student psychosocial beliefs and outcomes.

The aim of the current study was to examine whether students’ perceptions of teacher support at an individual-level, teacher support and well-functioning class climate at classroom-level, and teacher ...support and well-functioning class climate at school-level were associated with peer victimization. Data were obtained from a Student School Survey administered by the selected Swedish municipality. Multilevel analyses were based on 5,646 students in 277 classes and 27 schools. At the individual-level, girls and students who perceived greater teacher support than their classmates were victimized less often by their peers. In addition, students in schools with classes characterized by greater cooperation, cohesion, working atmosphere and respect toward their teachers tended to score lower on peer victimization. Within schools, students belonging to classes with a more well-functioning class climate than what was average in the school, and students belonging to classes that scored their teacher as more caring, fair and respectful compared to other classes in the school, were less likely to be targets of peer victimization.

Since COVID-19 was officially listed as a pandemic, online schooling has become a more pervasive form of learning, and cyberloafing has become a widespread behavior, even among adolescents. However, ...less research has explored the influencing mechanism of adolescents' cyberloafing. Based on relevant studies and the real lives of adolescents, this study aimed to examine the association between a competitive class climate and cyberloafing among adolescents, its underlying mechanism, the mediating role of perceived stress and the moderating role of self-esteem. A total of 686 adolescents were recruited to complete a set of questionnaires assessing cyberloafing, perceived stress, self-esteem, and perceived competitive class climate. The results showed that a competitive class climate was positively associated with perceived stress, and the U-shaped relationship between perceived stress and cyberloafing was significant. Perceived stress mediated the relationship between a competitive class climate and cyberloafing. Meanwhile, self-esteem moderated the U-shaped relationship between perceived stress and cyberloafing and the linear relationship between a competitive class climate and perceived stress. The results of this study indicate that the influence of a competitive class climate on individual learning behavior may be nonlinear, and proper competition can contribute to reducing individual cyberloafing.
Is kindness useful in classroom contexts? This article proposes an operational definition of kindness in school contexts and presents a synthesis of research studies showing its beneficial effects on ...well-being at school and on learning. Research studies have shown that negative emotions can have negative effects on memory, attention, creativity, motivation to learn and psychosocial functioning. Conversely, positive emotions can enhance learning in classrooms as well as well-being and relationship quality. Studies have also shown that training teachers to modify their interactional style in order to better respond to students’ basic psychological needs leads to higher levels of teacher and student well-being and better school performance. Kindness in school contexts can thus be considered as having positive effects on students’ and teachers’ work. This encourages further research into this field.
Student evaluations of teaching (SETs) are important at most colleges and universities. One purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which motivational climate was associated with SETs. ...Another purpose was to determine whether course ease was associated with SETs. Participants included 2,949 undergraduate students from 30 courses at a large public university. Using hierarchical linear modeling, we examined the extent to which students’ motivation-related course perceptions (empowerment/autonomy, usefulness, success expectancies, situational interest, and caring) related to SETs at the student and class levels. SETs were highly associated with motivational climate. Furthermore, easier courses were rated lower by students when controlling for motivational climate and the demographical composition of the class. These findings highlight the association between the motivational climate and SETs and suggest that one way to improve SETs may be for instructors to focus on improving the motivational climate rather than making the course easier.
