The Southern Advanced Photon Source is a proposed diffraction-limited storage ring operating at middle energy. A candidate injector includes a low energy Linac and a full energy booster. In ...the paper, we present the concept design of the booster, which is a high intensity synchrotron accelerator. An impedance model has been obtained and the instability threshold has been predicted.
Recent advancements in large language models (LLMs) demonstrate great potential in supporting engineering design, especially conceptual design. Prompt engineering plays an important role in ...facilitating designer-LLM collaboration in conceptual design. This paper proposes a new classification scheme that categorizes design-specific prompts into multiple classes. It also introduces different patterns for synthesizing design prompts, being grounded in the theoretical foundations of prompt engineering and domain-specific design methodology. A design experiment, utilizing ChatGPT, was conducted to investigate the impacts of different syntheses of design prompts on the effectiveness of LLM in concept generation, as measured by the metrics of novelty and diversity.

Conceptual architectural design is a complex process that draws on past experience and creativity to generate new designs. The application of artificial intelligence to this process should not be ...oriented toward finding a solution in a defined search space since the design requirements are not yet well defined in the conceptual stage. Instead, this process should be considered as an exploration of the requirements, as well as of possible solutions to meet those requirements.
This work offers a tour of major research projects that apply artificial intelligence solutions to architectural conceptual design. We examine several approaches, but most of the work focuses on the use of evolutionary computing to perform these tasks. We note a marked increase in the number of papers in recent years, especially since 2015. Most employ evolutionary computing techniques, including cellular automata. Most initial approaches were oriented toward finding innovative and creative forms, while the latest research focuses on optimizing architectural form.

Currently, limited efforts have focused on the multi-objective optimization and effective control of the side-stream extractive distillation processes (EDS). Herein, the EDS and a heat-integration scheme (EDSH) are proposed for separating the minimum-boiling azeotropic mixture ethyl acetate (EtAC)-ethanol (EtOH). Firstly, the conceptual design by residue curve maps is demonstrated for the EDS. Following which, the genetic algorithm (GA) optimization is carried out to minimize the total capital investment cost (CAP) and the annual energy cost (ENR). Optimal scheme under the product purity constraints is then obtained from the Pareto front. And the EDSH scheme is shown with less TAC and CO2 emission. Therefore, an improved control structure CS3 combining the composition-(RR1/SIDE) cascade and feedforward strategy is developed to achieve decent dynamic responses for the EDSH. The anti-disturbance capability of different control structures in terms of the transient deviation and offsets are compared with the assistance of the integral absolute error.

This Conceptual Design Report describes LUXE (Laser Und XFEL Experiment), an experimental campaign that aims to combine the high-quality and high-energy electron beam of the European XFEL with a ...powerful laser to explore the uncharted terrain of quantum electrodynamics characterised by both high energy and high intensity. We will reach this hitherto inaccessible regime of quantum physics by analysing high-energy electron-photon and photon-photon interactions in the extreme environment provided by an intense laser focus. The physics background and its relevance are presented in the science case which in turn leads to, and justifies, the ensuing plan for all aspects of the experiment: Our choice of experimental parameters allows (i) field strengths to be probed where the coupling to charges becomes non-perturbative and (ii) a precision to be achieved that permits a detailed comparison of the measured data with calculations. In addition, the high photon flux predicted will enable a sensitive search for new physics beyond the Standard Model. The initial phase of the experiment will employ an existing 40 TW laser, whereas the second phase will utilise an upgraded laser power of 350 TW. All expectations regarding the performance of the experimental set-up as well as the expected physics results are based on detailed numerical simulations throughout.

This report presents the conceptual design of a new European research infrastructure EuPRAXIA. The concept has been established over the last four years in a unique collaboration of 41 laboratories ...within a Horizon 2020 design study funded by the European Union. EuPRAXIA is the first European project that develops a dedicated particle accelerator research infrastructure based on novel plasma acceleration concepts and laser technology. It focuses on the development of electron accelerators and underlying technologies, their user communities, and the exploitation of existing accelerator infrastructures in Europe. EuPRAXIA has involved, amongst others, the international laser community and industry to build links and bridges with accelerator science — through realising synergies, identifying disruptive ideas, innovating, and fostering knowledge exchange. The Eu-PRAXIA project aims at the construction of an innovative electron accelerator using laser- and electron-beam-driven plasma wakefield acceleration that offers a significant reduction in size and possible savings in cost over current state-of-the-art radiofrequency-based accelerators. The foreseen electron energy range of one to five gigaelectronvolts (GeV) and its performance goals will enable versatile applications in various domains, e.g. as a compact free-electron laser (FEL), compact sources for medical imaging and positron generation, table-top test beams for particle detectors, as well as deeply penetrating X-ray and gamma-ray sources for material testing. EuPRAXIA is designed to be the required stepping stone to possible future plasma-based facilities, such as linear colliders at the high-energy physics (HEP) energy frontier. Consistent with a high-confidence approach, the project includes measures to retire risk by establishing scaled technology demonstrators. This report includes preliminary models for project implementation, cost and schedule that would allow operation of the full Eu-PRAXIA facility within 8—10 years.

Many-objective optimisation is a design problem, having more than 3 objective functions, which is found to be difficult to solve. Implementation of such optimisation on aircraft conceptual design ...will greatly benefit a design team, as a great number of trade-off design solutions are provided for further decision making. In this paper, a many-objective optimisation problem for an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is posed with 6 objective functions: take-off gross weight, drag coefficient, take off distance, power required, lift coefficient and endurance subject to aircraft performance and stability constraints. Aerodynamic analysis is carried out using a vortex lattice method, while aircraft component weights are estimated empirically. A new self-adaptive meta-heuristic based on decomposition is specifically developed for this design problem. The new algorithm along with nine established and recently developed multi-objective and many-objective meta-heuristics are employed to solve the problem, while comparative performance is made based upon a hypervolume indicator. The results reveal that the proposed optimiser is the best performer for this design task.

Abstract Including production considerations in the early design stages of aircraft structures is challenging. Production information is mostly known by experts and rarely formally documented such ...that it can be effectively used during the design process. Producibility is mostly considered after completing the design, resulting in increased cost and development time due to the late discovery of production issues. This paper presents a new model, called the Manufacturing Information Model (MIM), which supports the automatic inclusion of production considerations into the design process. The MIM provides a single source of truth and a generic structure to capture and organize production-related information in a product system. Furthermore, it provides compatibility analyses to automatically warn for or exclude infeasible designs. Analysis tools use the information stored within the MIM to calculate the mass, costs, and production rate of the product. To show the functionalities of the MIM, it has been applied to the conceptual design of a wing box at a Tier 1 company. This use case shows how the MIM supports trade-off decisions, as it allows for the identification of trends and the ranking of different manufacturing concepts. Overall, the MIM provides a structured and formal approach to include production information in the conceptual design, improving the decision-making process.
