It is only recently that VR has become one of the most sought out technologies to create a narrative experience. However, as David Z. Saltz points out, 'scholars and practitioners have yet to settle ...on a name to describe performances that incorporate digital media'. In this article, I extend Jennifer Parker-Starbuck's concept of 'cyborg theatre' to the three technological retellings of Shakespeare - To Be With Hamlet, Hamlet 360, and The Under Presents: Tempest - and demonstrate immersive VR theatre as a site where the possibilities of shifting subjectivity materialize. The first section explores the nature of VR in theatre through its central function. Focusing on my experiences of the productions, I explore the cyborgean intersections in VR theatre via the sense of immersion, and highlight how the immersive power of VR incites reflections on the impact of new technologies on the body and the subject of the audience. Based on an examination of immersion, the second section focuses on the audience's embodied subjectivity and argues immersive VR theatre as a site where alternative corporeal and technological configurations could be tested out. I am especially interested in how sensory immersion in VR, unlike existing claims on it, relates to the materiality as well as the imitative representation of a fictional world.

Cyborg intelligence is committed to combining artificial intelligence with biological intelligence and human body technology through the tight integration of machines and biological organisms, so as ...to improve the natural capabilities of human beings. Brain–computer integration as a typical and effective way to explore cyborg intelligence has been widely applied in many scenarios. In cyborg systems regarding brain–computer integration, task planning in the artificial intelligent unit aims to identify intention of biological unit, which highly relies on a classifier. An urgent challenge for task planning is to effectively deal with the uncertainties associated with the complexity and variability of brain dynamics, which is reflected in the non-stationary nature of brain signals. This poses a severe problem for existing models to the intention identification in task planning. Additionally, model interpretability is also very important in task planning for several reasons such as human–machine communication, trust, etc. In this study, we focus on EEG-based motor imagery and develop a stacking-based ensemble fuzzy inference framework for task planning. In this framework, the zero-order Takagi–Sugeno–Kang (0-TSK) fuzzy system is taken as the basic component and the output of one component is augmented into the input feature space as new input for another component. This framework has two main merits: (i) its promising performance is guaranteed by the general stacking principle asserting that the manifold structure of the input feature space can be opened by the outputs generated from this space. (ii) its interpretability is guaranteed from three levels. Additionally, from a probabilistic statistical point of view, we theoretically demonstrate that as long as the basic learning component is a weak classifier, the general stacking principle can guarantee promising performance. Experimental results conducted on motor imagery data demonstrate the promising performance and high interpretability of the proposed framework.

When we think about “machines”, or “robots”, or “AI”, what comes to our minds is generally an extension of our common relationship with objects in our humane and mundane world: there is a clear ...distinction between the subject, “we”, and the object. Upon review of some of the most important literary trends of the last centuries, this article invites us to consider the prevalence of this classical ontological division, taking into consideration examples such as Frankenstein, the “brain in a vat” thought experiment, and the last advances towards the reality of “cyborg” beings. The question behind the article bring us to consider to what extent an absolute division between us and machines is still a thing in our days.
Die feministischen Disability Studies haben stets ein verwickeltes Verhältnis zur Ikone feministischer Technikkritik – der Cyborgfigur – unterhalten. Dimensionen wie die Infragestellung von ...Ideologien körperlicher Natürlichkeit, Ganzheit und Abgeschlossenheit haben zu einer intensiven Auseinandersetzung geführt. Zugleich schufen entpolitisierende Metaphern von Behinderung, die Negierung der materiellen, ökonomischen Lebensbedingungen von behinderten Frauen und besonders die Idealisierung von Prothesen im Cyborgmythos immer auch Unbehagen auf Seiten feministischer Disability Studies. Diese ambivalente Beziehung nimmt der Beitrag als Ausgangspunkt, um zu fragen, wie die Cyborgfigur anders erzählt werden könnte. Einerseits soll sich dabei besonders auf halbfiktionales Alltagswissen von behinderten Frauen fokussiert werden sowie andererseits auf das Thema der künstlich-intelligenten Gesundheitstechnologien eingegangen werden.

This essay aims to contribute to ongoing explorations of glitch feminism and its capacities for resistance against capitalist- and cis-normativity. To this theoretical project, I contribute the ...concept of glitch virality by emphasizing glitch feminism's circulation across digital, social, and material registers. Through an attendance to glitch virality, the project of glitch feminism is figured as a queer worldmaking project for those subject to the violences of dominative gendered constructs. To demonstrate this concept, I conduct a close reading of the music, visual texts, and multimodal circulations of glitch by electronic artist SOPHIE, whose enactments of glitch feminism demonstrate its viral capacities.

Since the beginning of the 21st century, a new artistic direction has been formed in biohacking – “the cyborg art” (cyborgism), whose leaders (cyborg artist Moon Ribas and “transhuman” or “the first ...cyborg” Neil Harbisson), promote a transhumanist project of improvements or technological additions implanted directly into the human body. “The Cyborg Art” at the theoretical and practical levels implements the paradigm of the new art of man-machine. M. Ribas (a female seismographer) embodies transhumanist projects through art or spectacular events, positioning them as a deeper connection with nature. Her colleague, N. Harbisson, who has an implanted intracranial chip, implements several artistic and technical projects. The innovators say they will continue to “improve” their bodies with implants and gadgets. Both artists, through the Cyborg Foundation and its branch Cyborg Arts organization, are encouraging as many people as possible to become cyborgs, assuming that a new community will inevitably be formed in the near future, where two species will definitely coexist: humans and cyborgs.

Intention to use memory implants for non-therapeutic purposes has recently received attention among researchers. The present study examined perfectionism with two dimensions namely personal standards ...(PS) and evaluative concerns (EC) as possible dispositional factors associated with the intent to use memory implants. This study also examined the moderating role of internal locus of control (LOC) on the relationship between the dimensions of perfectionism and the intention to use memory implants. Employing a cross-sectional design, this study collected data on PS, EC, internal LOC and intention to use memory implants from a purposive sample of 686 Spanish university students aged between 18 and 28 years old (M = 21.88, SD = 2.40, males = 361, females = 325). Results showed that both PS and EC perfectionism have positive relationships with the intent to use memory implants. Internal LOC is also found to be strengthening the relationship between PS and the intent to use memory implants. These findings yield implications for those pushing forward the acceptance of human-machine hybrid and for those concerned about the detrimental consequences of such artificially formulated changes in humankind.

Cyborg products are already available on today's market. They are a potentially large market offering extraordinary opportunities and challenges for businesses. Becoming a cyborg involves many ...ethical aspects that can be explored from a consumer behavior perspective. However, while these ethical variables have been used in several market analyses, none has examined their potential use for market segmentation in disruptive markets such as the one for cyborg products. We use the Composite Multidimensional Ethics Scale (Composite MES) to explore ethical judgments regarding cyborg products in a sample of 1563 university students in seven countries. Our findings show that all ethical judgment dimensions contribute in the same way and with similar intensity to cyborg market segmentation. We identify three potential market segments. These segments exhibit different characteristics with regard not only to their willingness to become a cyborg but also to their technology acceptance analysis dimensions. We make recommendations for the ethical exploration of this emerging market.
