For a number of years now, Croatia has had a negative net migration rate, which means that more people have emigrated than immigrated during a period of time. It is difficult to establish the real ...number of persons who have emigrated from Croatia due to a number of reasons. There is also the issue of the so-called flfictional population«, persons who are registered as living in Croatia, even though they do not actually live there. A large number of persons have not registered themselves as having left the country, even though they are obliged to do so by law. The reason for this, as well as the fictional registration in Croatia, is maintaining or gaining certain benefits in Croatia. In Croatia, there is a large difference among regions in terms of emigration intensity. The goal of this paper is to analyze which parts of Croatia suffered the most from emigration, and which felt the least effect of this process.
Međutim, uz aktualne negativne trendove jedino hitna provedba odgovarajuće razvojne i populacijske politike može osigurati dugoročnu opstojnost i konstitutivnost Hrvata u Bosni i Hercegovini.

The demographic, social and economic development of the Vukovar-Srijem county during and after the Homeland War occurred under the impact of the wartime demographic losses as well as the longterm demographic, social and economic consequences of the war and the long-lasting occupation of two thirds of the county’s territory. On the basis of available data, in this work the direct demographic losses of the Vukovar-Srijem county and their assessed impact on the demographic changes in the county in the „wartime” intercensal period (1991-2001) have been determined and described. Quantitative processing of the available digital database/application of the Croatian Memorial Documentation Centre of the Homeland War in Zagreb has determined that in the Homeland War, 3,636 pre-war inhabitants of Vukovar-Srijem county were either killed or went missing, which in comparison to the pre-war population figures (census 1991) results in an aproximate general wartime mortality rate of 15.72 per mille. Furthermore, through a numerical analysis the spacial, temporal and structural differentiation/selectivness of actual demographic losses in relation to certain parameters such as gender, age, nationality, pre-war residence of victims as well as to their places of death have been determined. The direct demographic losses established are a significant determinant of demographic changes in postwar Vukovar-Srijem county, particularly in the context of the strenghtening of the overall and natural depopulation as well as the accelaration of population aging as shown in the postwar censuses (2001, 2011, 2021).
Podgorje encompasses the area of the Croatia Adriatic coast at the foot of Velebit. Viewed administratively, included in the research are the settlements of the town of Senj, plus the municipalities ...of Karlobag and Starigrad, which with their territory participate on the coast of the Adriatic Sea. The observed area is divided between Lika-Senj County (Town of Senj and the Municipality of Karlobag) and Zadar County (Municipality of Starigrad). Podgorje has very negative demographic features. The overall depopulation has lasted, with the exception of one intercensal period (1981-1991), continuously from 1910 when the largest population was noted(16,782 residents). In the following one hundred years the number of inhabitants almost halved.According to the latest census of the population from 2011 Podgorje had only 8,894 inhabitants. The natural depopulation has been present in Podgorje for many years, which influences the demographic conditions very negatively. The ageing of the population is in a very advanced stage. In 1971, the ageing index was 58, whilst according to the last census from 2011, the value of this demographic indicator had risen to as much as 187.8.The reasons for this unfavourable demographic situation are complex. The physical geographical features have unfavourable affected development in the past (the karst relief with many steep configurations, and strong ‘bura’ wind). Today Podgorje is located in the zone of the overlapping nodal-functional regions of Rijeka, to which its northern part gravitates, and Zadar, to which its southern part gravitates. With the construction of the Zagreb-Split motorway and with the planned motorway or the Rijeka-Žuta Lokva express road, Podgorje will in effect find itself in a kind of transport-like isolation, which will not act favourably on the demographic and economic trends.Despite the position on the Adriatic coast which offers the good possibility for the development of tourism, with the exception of Starigrad, where there is a starting point for trips into Paklenica National Park, this activity in Podgorje is not more significantly developed, which unfavourably affects the demographic conditions.
This paper deals with the geographical problems of the Koločep and Lopud islands in thesouthern Dalmatian part of Croatia. The work is included in the project "Geographical bases ofthe development of ...little Croatian islands". The paper specially deals with the present-dayproblems of depopulation and underdevelopment that represents the special problem for thedemographic revitalization of the islands.

The subject of this study is the total population trends and contemporary changes in the biological structure of the population of Eastern Croatia. The purpose of the study is, based on the results of the last two censuses (2001 and 2011), the analysis of vital statistics for the period 2001-2016, and the projections of the future population trends (by 2030, and 2051) to determine, analyze and interpret basic aggregate indicators indicating trends in the general, natural and mechanical movement of the population of Eastern Croatia and their interactive link with the process of demographic aging. The aim of the paper is to establish and describe the reached level of total depopulation and demographic aging of Eastern Croatia. Given that general and partial depopulation processes are in strong correlation with the formation of the biological structure of the population, it is clear that together they form far-reaching regressive factors of population development, as well as socio-economic development of Eastern Croatia. If the current unfavorable demographic trends persist, especially in bio-reproduction, it is reasonable to expect that Eastern Croatia by the middle of the 21st century will naturally and mechanically lose one third of the population registered in 2011. The expected further decline in the number of inhabitants will not be linear, and we expect a greater imbalance between certain large (functional) age contingents, especially in the relation: young – old population.
U članku se analiziraju osnovni demografski procesi u Republici Hrvatskoj (NUTS 1), u njenim statističkim makroregijama (NUTS 2) i županijama (NUTS 3) u međupopisnom razdoblju 2001. – 2011. Većina županija Kontinentalne Hrvatske čini slabo razvijena, periferna područja depopulacije i općenito demografskog nazadovanja.
Polarisation processes, which began in Croatia in the 1950's, resulted in disparate socio-economic development, in an uneven spatial distribution of the population, and in a concentration of people, ...jobs and housing in urban settlements. Coastal cities, as hubs and agents of socio-economic development, in their regions became focal points for the concentration of the population, while islands and hinterland areas suffered depopulation and demographic ageing. Intense in-migration had a positive influence on the demographic development of coastal cities. They became hotbeds of bioreproduction and up to the most recent intercensus period (1991–2001) displayed dynamic population growth. However political and economic changes in this recent period, together with the effects of the war, deepened and accelerated increasingly unfavourable demographic processes, which were reflected in an overall reduction of the population of coastal Adriatic cities, as well as in a deterioration of its structure. Decreasing fertility, demographic ageing and changes in life values brought about a transformation of the family, and hence changes in the size of households and in the relations among family members. The general trend today involves a gradual reduction in the number of household members, and a continuous increase in the number of two and one-member households.
