The Early Christian churches of the Late Antique hilltop settlement in Lavant (Lienz, Austria) have been investigated for almost a century. In recent years (2017–2021), a large conservation campaign ...took place within the ruins of the so-called Episcopal Church. During this campaign, it was possible to carry out targeted excavations inside the Early Christian church to understand the consecutive building phases and their dating better. In addition to new insights into the history of the building, several new finds also came from these excavation campaigns, providing further information about the church’s interior. In the following, all objects associated with lighting are presented.
Some hundred early Christian churches are attested on Cyprus, dating from the fourth to seventh centuries. Their architectural remains have shaped the Cypriot landscape. The peculiar evolution of the ...features of the Cypriot church gave rise to a scientific discussion on how to evaluate these specific local developments. In the last decade, individual research as well as conferences and workshops dedicated to late antiquity and the early Byzantine period have contributed towards a new approach and a new impulse for the study of this period in Cyprus. The volume reinforces and furthers this trend taking into consideration relevant parameters reflected on the architectural planning, such as structural knowledge and innovations, cultic behaviours, liturgical traditions, economic capacities, social and political aspirations.
Based on current developments in research, new findings in Cyprus and the focus on intercultural contacts, the volume is organised into four different sections: 1) Building the Christian cityscape and landscape; 2) Christian communities and church building, fourth to seventh centuries; 3) Interior arrangement and theological concepts; 4) „International Byzantine Style“? Local traditions and adaptations in- and outside Cyprus.
This study investigates the astronomical alignments of the Byzantine church complex at Ḥorvat Beit Loya in Israel to understand its orientation and cultural significance. The site's historical ...context, proximity to pilgrimage routes, and church's function as a Christian center are outlined. Through archaeoastronomical research, potential alignments with celestial phenomena and religious festivals are identified. The findings suggest a significant alignment with the sunrise on the feast day of St. James the Apostle which indicates the possibility of the church being dedicated to him. The study reveals the intricate relationship between architecture, astronomy, iconography, and culture in Byzantine Christianity.
With a detailed analysis and a critical review of former perceptions regarding the secondary use of the Temple of Augustus in Pula, Croatia, through the centuries, and the presentation of previously ...unreleased documents, we follow the social, actual and architectural transformation of the temple from an Early Christian church, dwelling house, town granary, lapidarium, to a museum. At the same time certain observations or historical interpretations from the past have been corrected. In the middle of the 18th century Pula's ancient monuments became an unavoidable object of interest to many researchers of antiquity: architects, archaeologists, and painters. Thus, in addition to written materials, historical sources from the field of fine arts also figure prominently in the study of the Temple of Augustus. Publication Abstract
