Depression is one of the costliest and most prevalent health conditions in the U.S. with 21 million adults having experienced at least one major depressive episode. Despite the availability of ...evidence-based treatments for depression, a large proportion of people with new diagnoses fail to initiate formal mental health treatment. Although individuals across all racial and ethnic groups fail to initiate treatment for depression, historically minoritized racial/ethnic groups are at even greater risk.
Thirty-four participants representing historically underserved racial and ethnic populations from two large health care systems in the U.S. participated in qualitative interviews or focus group to identify factors that impede and facilitate depression treatment initiation in primary care settings.
Participants identified individual and systemic barriers and facilitators of treatment initiation for depression and suggested several ideas for increasing treatment engagement (i.e., increased communication and education from providers, community events, information on social media).
Novel interventions are needed to improve treatment initiation following initial diagnosis of depression in primary care settings. Findings from this study offer suggestions for improving treatment initiation in traditionally underserved communities.
•Depression treatment initiation is inhibited by patient and systemic level barriers.•Historically minoritized groups recommend community-based efforts.•A strong patient-primary care provider alliance can facilitate treatment initiation.

It discusses the context of ethnic minorities and women in enterprise and summarises research evidence ...relating to their relative access to finance, market selection and management skills. Policy within the field of diversity and enterprise is characterised by a number of tensions and unresolved questions including the presence of perceived or actual discrimination, the quantity and quality of ethnic minority and women-led businesses, potential market failure in the support provided to diverse enterprises and the substantive uniqueness of ethnic minority and women-led enterprises. Particular implications for policy and practice as well as directions for future research are discussed.

Electronic cigarettes (also termed e-cigarette or vapes) often contain nicotine, an addictive psychoactive substance, which can have harmful effects during adolescence. Frequent experiences of ...discrimination are one risk factor shown to increase susceptibility to tobacco use, especially for individuals that identify as a social minority. Applying Intersectionality Theory, this research examined the relationship between youth experiences of discrimination and vape use at the intersection of race/ethnicity and sexual orientation.
Cross-sectional survey data from 4747 youth (ages 12–17) that participated in the 2022 Teens, Nicotine, and Tobacco Project (TNT) online survey were used to evaluate the impact of discrimination on vape use for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and/or queer/questioning (LGBQ+) youth of color.
Multivariable regression analyses showed that identifying as both a sexual and racial/ethnic minority was a risk factor for experiencing discrimination. Frequent discrimination and reporting discrimination due to sexual orientation was associated with a greater likelihood of ever and current vaping. Path models supported that discrimination mediated the relationship between intersectional identity and vape use. LGBQ+ youth of color reported more frequent discrimination, which was associated with a greater likelihood of ever/current vape use.
Intersectionality Theory aids in understanding how discrimination can exacerbate tobacco-related disparities for youth with multiple minority identities. Findings corroborate the importance of measuring discrimination in public health surveys. Effective tobacco interventions could incorporate strategies to cope with discrimination-related stress.

Attribution theory is concerned with the perceived causes of success and failure. The main principles of the theory are reviewed, with a focus on both antecedents and consequences of perceived causality. Among the antecedents or determinants of attributions discussed are teacher behaviors, such as praise and blame that can indirectly function as a low ability cue. Consequences are reviewed in light of three properties or dimensions of causes: locus, stability, and controllability. Each dimension is uniquely linked to particular psychological and behavioral outcomes; empirical evidence in support of each causal dimension-consequence linkage is presented. A unique contribution of attribution theory is that it addresses the antecedents and consequences of both intrapersonal attributions (how one perceives the self) and interpersonal attributions (how one perceives other people). Directions for future research are discussed, including more attention to innovative methods for studying attributions, multi- pronged and multi-level intervention approaches that include an attributional component, and incorporating race/ethnicity into the attributional model.

Some theories suggest that ethnic minority students who anticipate discrimination in the labour market may invest more in easily observable human capital, such as education, to signal their ...productivity to employers. Empirical research has been hampered, however, by a lack of direct information on anticipated labour market treatment. We link ethnic minority student expectations of facing discrimination in the labour market to subsequent performance in high-stakes certificated national exams in England. Our findings suggest that anticipating labour market discrimination is associated with better exam performance, consistent with the view that students are seeking to counteract potential future penalties.

Using toponym data, population data, and night-time light data, we visualized the development index of the Yi, Wa, Zhuang, Naxi, Hani, and Dai ethnic groups on ArcGIS as well as the distribution of ...25 ethnic minorities in the study area. First, we extracted the toponym data of 25 ethnic minorities in the study area, combined with night-time light data and the population proportion data of each ethnic group, then we obtained the development index of each ethnic group in the study area. We compared the development indexes of the Yi, Wa, Zhuang, Naxi, Hani, and Dai ethnic groups with higher development indexes. The results show that the Yi nationality’s development index was the highest, reaching 28.86 (with two decimal places), and the Dai nationality’s development index was the lowest (15.22). The areas with the highest minority development index were concentrated in the core area of the minority development, and the size varied with the minority’s distance. According to the distribution of ethnic minorities, we found that the Yi ethnic group was distributed in almost the entire study area, while other ethnic minorities had obvious geographical distribution characteristics, and there were multiple ethnic minorities living together. This research is of great significance to the cultural protection of ethnic minorities, the development of ethnic minorities, and the remote sensing mapping of lights at night.

This paper explores the potential impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on people's perceptions of cohesion in their local communities; particularly for vulnerable groups/communities, such as ethnic ...minorities or those living in highly deprived neighbourhoods. To this end, we examine both trends over time in overall levels of cohesion as well as patterns of positive and negative changes experienced by individuals using nationally representative data from Understanding Society Study. We test whether rates of positive-/negative-change in cohesion over the pandemic-period differed across socio-demographic groups and neighbourhood characteristics. These trends are then compared to patterns of positive-/negative-change over time experienced in earlier periods to test whether the pandemic was uniquely harmful. We show that the overall levels of social cohesion are lower in June 2020 compared to all of the examined pre-pandemic periods. The decline of perceived-cohesion is particularly high in the most deprived communities, among certain ethnic minority groups and among the lower-skilled. Our findings suggest that the pandemic put higher strain on social-resources among vulnerable groups and communities, who also experienced more negative changes in other areas of life.

It characterizes the low level of education of the Roma population by presenting case studies. Finally, it describes the possibilities of support by describing two helpful interventions. Most importantly, that the extreme backwardness of the Roma, previously considered general, has declined significantly.
The article analyzes the capacities and channels of Lithuania's minority representation in the European Parliament. Possible minority representation can potentially be achieved through representation ...of minorities in the electoral lists of Lithuania's mainstream parties or by self-organization around minority coalition led by the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania – Christian Families Alliance (EAPL-CFA). However, these two channels demonstrate two different outcomes. First, the article discusses the role of minority representatives in the mainstream parties focusing on the cases of Viktor Uspaskich and Leonidas Donskis. It is followed by the analysis of the electoral performances of the EAPL-CFA with the emphasis on the party’s general political capacities, abilities to keep its current and attract the new electorate, and the leadership issues taking into account personalistic factors and a series of scandals that happened in 2018 and involved the leadership of the Union of Poles in Lithuania.
