Sites of Resistance: Gypsies, Roma and Travellers in Schools, Communities and the Academy, by Andrew Ryder (London, Ucl Ioe Press, 2017)
The main purpose of the research is to determine the tourist activity and destinations of the Polish Argentines as exemplified by the residents of Buenos Aires. For this purpose, pilot surveys were ...conducted in 2018, thanks to which information was obtained regarding the duration of the journey, frequency of travelling, choice of the means of transport, way of travelling, who the Polish Argentines travel with, where they stop during the trip and what the main motives and travel destinations are. Buenos Aires is the main concentration of Polonia in Argentina, at the same time it is one of the largest Polish community centres located in South America. According to the Polish Embassy in Buenos Aires, it is estimated that about 18-20,000 people of Polish origin live only in the capital of Argentina. Among the Polish Argentines, recreational tourism dominates and the most important holiday region is the coast of La Plata. As confirmed by the conducted pilot surveys, Polish Argentines are active considering the aspect of tourism. About 40% of the respondents travel 2–3 times a year. Most people travel for cognitive and recreational purposes. Most of the respondents are people who organise their trips by themselves, and during the journeys they most often stay with friends and family.
— Most studies on parental sensitivity are based on Western samples, and the cross‐cultural applicability of this construct has been subject to debate. This article reports on a systematic literature ...review on observational studies of parental sensitivity in ethnic minority families with young children. It shows that parental sensitivity is generally lower in ethnic minority families than in majority families. The evidence suggests that the main cause for this difference is family stress due to socioeconomic disadvantage. The review found little evidence for cultural explanations. Most importantly, the review shows that parental sensitivity is related to positive child development in ethnic minority families. Interventions attempting to improve ethnic minority children’s well‐being should focus on both reducing family stress and enhancing parental sensitivity.

ePUB and EPDF available Open Access under CC-BY-NC-ND licence. This book illustrates life through the COVID-19 pandemic for ethnic minorities in Britain. Drawing from the Evidence for Equality ...National Survey (EVENS), the book presents new evidence of ethnic inequalities and sheds new light on underlying racisms, opening them up to debate as crucial social concerns. Written by leading international experts in the field, this is a must-read for anyone interested in contemporary ethnic inequalities and racism from academics and policy makers to voluntary and community sector organisations.
The disruption and contraction of older adults' social networks are among the less discussed consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. Our objective was to provide an evidence-based commentary on ...racial/ethnic disparities in social network resources and draw attention to the ways in which disasters differentially affect social networks, with meaningful insight for the ongoing pandemic.
We draw upon prior research on social networks and past natural disasters to identify major areas of network inequality. Attention is given to how pre-pandemic racial/ethnic network disparities are exacerbated during the current crisis, with implications for physical and mental health outcomes.
Evidence from the literature shows a robust association between strong social networks and physical and mental health outcomes. During times of crisis, access to social networks for older adults is disrupted, particularly for marginalized groups. We document pre-pandemic disparities in social networks resources and offer insight for examining the impact of COVID-19 on disrupting social networks among older adults.
Importantly, racial/ethnic disparities in social networks both prior to and as a result of the pandemic intensify existing inequalities and demonstrate the necessity of better understanding social network inequalities for marginalized older adults, particularly in the context of the COVID-19 health crisis.
Clinical research is a fundamental part of the healthcare system and is critical to improving care, making it safe and effective. Research participants should be diverse as this reduces bias and ...helps to better understand illness and treatment and how it affects different groups of people. However, due to health inequalities and barriers to research participation, clinical research still lacks diversity. Data from the US Food and Drug Administration showed that 76% of research participants were White and the remaining 24% were from an ethnic minority. In the UK, only 5% of ethnic minorities have ever participated in clinical trials. Recently, with the COVID-19 vaccine trials, out of 270 000 participants, only 11 000 and 1200 participants were from Asian and Black backgrounds, respectively. The research participation of under-represented groups requires co-development with community members. This proactive approach helps establish trust and enhance recruitment strategies that build a positive legacy for under-represented groups.
