This paper studies whether euphemisms obfuscate the content of earnings conference calls and cause investors to underreact. I argue that managers’ use of euphemisms can alleviate the impact of bad ...news and delay the market reaction to adverse information. Using a dictionary of corporate euphemisms, I find that their use by managers—but not by analysts—is negatively associated with both immediate and future abnormal returns, and their frequency moderates the negative market reaction to bad earnings news. Finally, stock underreaction is more pronounced on busy earnings announcement dates, when investor attention is distracted.

Just like onomastics that preserve the oldest stages of language development, euphemisms can also be used and studied from the point of view of construction, giving us a valuable material for many ...types and ways of word formation in the Albanian language, as well as for adverbial means. The earlier they are, the greater the value from a linguistic point of view. Not all ways of word formation can be illustrated by euphemisms.” Likewise, which is part of euphemisms (from old Greek eu "good" + phemi "I say", speak), are words used to name things and objects, whose names for various reasons have been avoided from use. So, we are dealing with existing lexical units that mark a new referent. Euphemisms, in essence, are the transfer of the name from one object to another, they are figurative transitions of meaning. Such arguments bring quite a few research and study difficulties, referring to a foreign language, even more so when it comes to a classical language, dead for centuries, as is the case of Latin. In addition, it should be known that euphemisms do not have the same characteristics from language to language, because this linguistic phenomenon does not remain only on the linguistic level, but also extends and deepens on the ethnolinguistic level, otherwise in the entire culture of a people
There has been some progress in the United Kingdom regarding official recognition of the existence and needs of disabled asylum seekers and refugees. However, references are commonly accompanied by ...euphemistic labels, particularly of 'vulnerability'. This should be understood in the context of systematic reduction of services and support available to the wider population of asylum seekers and disabled people in the United Kingdom. I argue that these processes reinforce each other and that both undermine a rights-based approach. Focusing on recent asylum and immigration policies, I explore how labels of 'vulnerability' obscure systemic oppression and distract from the rights and achievements of disabled people. The regressive elements of vulnerability discourse are presented as if better than nothing. Such discourse risks reinforcing hegemonic acceptance of distinctions of human worth, with detrimental impact for migrants and citizens alike.

Nowadays, the challenges that the diplomatic world has to overcome are diverse and difficult to manage. Since the primary purpose of diplomacy is to reach agreement by softly overcoming disagreement, ...the use of euphemisms is of paramount importance. This article focuses to observe the way the diplomatic language function by means of euphemisms and to highlight their efficiency. Language is not a simple tool of conveying meaning by itself. The meaning should be decoded according to the context, the needs and interests of the sender involved in the process of communication and its various ways of perceptions. Thus, the role of euphemisms is to convey, besides the meaning of the message, perceived ad litteram, the attitude of the sender towards the receiver in order to mitigate the impact that the message would have on them.

This paper analyzes euphemisms - embellished expressions - excerpted from the Croatian public communication dis1course. The introductory chapters provide an overview of the definitions of euphemisms, ...from rhetorical to cognitive-lin1guistic ones. The central part of the paper analyses the functions of euphemisms in Croatian public communication, the ways and mechanisms of creating euphemisms in the Croatian language and the semantic areas in which euphemisms are more significantly represented. The research started from the hypothesis that euphemisms have deviated from their original purpose - to beautify the expression and save one's own or someone else's face - and that euphemisms are increas1ingly used in public communication to manipulate the interlocutor. To test the hypothesis, research was conducted using a bottom-up methodological approach that involved selecting materials from the corpus by "manually" browsing and following news and announcements in the electronic media, classifying euphemisms by types, functions, semantic areas and ways of formation, and concluding their use in Croatian public communication space.

This study aims at describing in detail how university students in Turkey use euphemisms in their daily language usage. The description of the euphemisms in the study was made according to the ...linguistic formations of euphemisms defined by Warren and accepted in the literature. The euphemisms used by the participants were determined by asking them questions in the most basic contexts that were selected considering the examples given in the definitions of euphemism. These contexts included going to the toilet, giving news of someone's death, and gaining weight. In the study conducted with 383 participants Metonyms were the most frequently employed method in the context of going to the toilet and the use of loan words; metaphors was the most preferred method in the context of giving news of someone's death; and implications were the choice of communication in the case of weight gain. In the case of implications, the use of "I" language was particularly remarkable. The more frequent use of implications for forming euphemisms based on the context compared to other methods shows that a pragmatic formation method is used more frequently for forming euphemisms in Turkish. In the study, it was determined that "-(y)I kaybetmek" (lose someone) was the most commonly used euphemism in the context of death in youth language. In addition, the use of "rhetorical questions" and expressions such as "like" and "as" were observed as euphemism-formation techniques in youth language in Turkish, though they are not found in Warren's classification.
This study aims to describe the form of euphemism in the comments column of Deddy Corbuzier's Youtube account. This type of research is descriptive qualitative. The data collection technique in this ...study was the listening technique and the note-taking technique. This study uses a content analysis approach. The data from this study are expressions in the form of words, sentences, and phrases that contain euphemisms contained in the comments column of Deddy Corbuzier's Youtube account. Speech analysis technique in this study uses the equivalent method. This study found 25 data in the form of euphemistic expressions contained in the comments column of Deddy Corbuzier's Youtube account. From the 25 data, there are 10 forms of euphemisms, namely: (1) metaphorical euphemisms where words are ignored and like knights, (2) figurative forms of expression euphemisms include the word natural selection and carrying out a mandate, (3) circumlocutionary euphemisms include the word children of the nation, formality. , and extraordinary, (4) euphemisms in the form of idiomatic phrases include humble words, brilliant thoughts, rare, and right-handed, (5) euphemisms in hyperbole form include words bitter, salty and enlightening thoughts, (6) euphemisms in the form of leasing have formula words ( special) and (angel) protectors, (7) euphemisms in the form of foreign terms include the words low profile, legowo and smart people, (8) euphemisms in the form of one word replacing another word with the word wow, building generations, and begging, (9) euphemisms of the form uptake contains the words salute and appreciation, and (10) euphemisms in the abbreviated form include the words UKT and PJJ.
