Facilitating oral skills through authentic materials such as music has been essential in foreign language teaching (FLT). However, a model whose core element is to develop adolescent EFL learners’ ...narrative skills through songs with highly emotional lyrics is still non-existent. Furthermore, engaging students in vivid debates about everyday topics with which they can relate is considered a key element to develop their narrative skills. Both, themes and structure of contemporary country music songs have been analysed by means of a corpus. Additionally, a questionnaire has been administered to know adolescent English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners’ attitude towards the implementation of social issues and music in class. The results show that there exists a narrative structure in contemporary country music songs and a wide range of topics with which students can easily identify. These results suggest that these song lyrics may serve to facilitate EFL students' narrative skills.
This paper reviews evidence on teachers’ resilience (TR) and wellbeing (TWB) on foreign language teaching enjoyment (FLTE). This review improves the understanding of the multi-dimensional, dynamic ...and context-dependent structural attributes of TR and TWB, as well as the relationship between them and the FLTE. The literature review verifies the positive effects of teachers’ positive optimism, self-efficacy, positive teacher-student relationship, teacher support and pro-social dynamic classroom environment on TR and TWB under person-context interaction, and also confirms that TR and TWB have predictive effect and significant impact on personal enjoyment, social enjoyment and student appreciation of FLTE three-factor structure. Some important findings from the review verifies the important role of teachers’ social enjoyment in the three-factor structure and the dominant role of prosocial situational characteristics in predicting FLTE. This paper finally explains its pedagogical significance and provides some suggestions for expanding the research on antecedent variables related to FLTE.
The research discussed the using of the first language in teaching a foreign language that had been a debate for language teaching practitioners for decades in language acquisition. The debate was ...about whether it was all right to use it in a foreign language class or not and how it affected the students’ learning process and result. Because of the pro and cons of using the first language (L1) in teaching a foreign language, the research was conducted to find out the use of the first language in teaching English as a foreign language. The research aimed to discover to what extent and in which instances L1 was used by the teachers in their English teaching class in terms of the teaching stages, including pre-teaching, whilst-teaching, and post-teaching in the classroom. The research also searched teachers’ perspectives and reasons for using L1 in their English class. Moreover, the research applied a qualitative method to gather information from the participants. The participants were four English teachers who taught English at senior high school in Bandung-West Java province, Majalengka-West Java province, Pangkal Pinang-Bangka Province, and Kuok-Riau Province. Data collkection was done by distributing questionnaires and doing interviews. The findings show that most teachers use Indonesian as L1 in the whilst-teaching stage when they deliver the materials. They use L1 to clarify the students’ understanding of the materials given and explain English language concepts, grammatical concepts, and difficult words. They argue that using L1 helps both teachers and students in teaching and learning English as a foreign language.
The relevance of using artificial intelligence (AI) techniques in education has increased significantly during the pandemic and the forced transition to distance learning technologies. It was during ...this period that there was a breakthrough in the development of digital educational resources based on AI, but methodological support for their effective use was not prepared. The mechanisms of leveling the risks associated with possible effects of AI on education have not been identified. The objective: to identify the risks and potential of AI techniques in their impact on the organization and outcome of the educational process. Research methods: theoretical analysis and qualitative description of practical examples of the exploiting AI techniques in foreign language teaching. The research is based on the general literature review related to the key concepts of the study: artificial intelligence, digital educational resources, foreign language teaching. The results: the most widely used AI techniques are mobile applications and platforms with educational courses; the use of highly intelligent products, such as smart classrooms, is not sufficiently developed; the risks of implementing AI methods are associated with the quality of technology, with the methodological proficiency of a teacher, and with individual learning strategies. The conclusions: at the current level of technology development, AI techniques are a supplementary educational component. It is advisable to involve teachers of particular subjects in the further improvement of these technologies. The practical significance of the results obtained is determined by the assessment of the AI technologies impact on the process of FLT and by the proposed methods of effective use of AI in teaching.
This mixed-method study aims to offer an insight into foreign language teachers’ perceptions on the relationship between intercultural competence and professional development. It is also attempted to ...explore some methods for evaluating teachers’ intercultural competence through their professional development activities. The research participants are local and international instructors at a private university in Turkey. Data was collected via a web-based questionnaire adapted from Sercu (2006) and a semi-structured interview designed by the researchers. The general findings of the study indicate that learning about a) target culture, b) local culture, and c) international students’ culture contribute to foreign language teachers’ intercultural competence and it is considered as a part of their professional development. However, it is pointed out that pre-service and in-service teacher training programs in Turkey cannot provide sufficient facilities to develop teachers’ intercultural competence. Key words: professional development, intercultural competence, foreign language teaching.
Abstract
Since teacher work engagement is argued to substantially affect education quality and learners’ performance, unveiling the factors affecting teacher engagement is of high significance. As an ...attempt to explore the antecedents of this construct in English-as-a-foreign-language (EFL) teachers, we tested a structural model of work engagement based on teachers’ professional identity, grit, and foreign language teaching enjoyment. A sample of 476 EFL teachers in Iran was requested to complete an online survey constituting the valid scales of the four constructs. Structural equation modeling (SEM) results indicated that the model fitted the data sufficiently. The model revealed that teachers’ grit, professional identity, and foreign language teaching enjoyment were the direct correlates of work engagement. Additionally, professional identity affected work engagement indirectly via foreign language teaching enjoyment and grit. Also, foreign language teaching enjoyment influenced work engagement through the mediation of grit. We conclude our study with a discussion on the implications of the findings.
The present study is quantitative research that attempts to scrutinize the drawbacks and acceptable ways of using a prominent online meeting platform, Google Meet, while determining its role in view ...of students’ perceptions as far as foreign language teaching and anxiety is concerned. Using online meeting programs can be considered to be an amusing and a versatile solution at first step. Yet, during the COVID-19 pandemic such platforms despite being a great remedy for the continuation of education on the one hand, were tested whether they would manage to substitute face-to-face education environment at the required level. While the previous studies prior to the pandemic could provide only limited and regional case studies carried out around the globe, those which are implemented in the wake of it will constitute a determining pattern regarding its use for utmost benefits or harm. Therefore, the real contribution or negative effects of such platforms will emerge depending on the further studies similar to the current one. Hence, in conformity with the purpose of the study, first a case specific Likert type scale was constructed utilizing inferential statistics to provide a better projection. Then, the scale was applied to 130 university students attending the English Language Literature Department of a state university to find out solutions for two fundamental research questions. As the results were analyzed through descriptive statistics, the findings of the study denoted different perspectives of students which would provide beneficial results for the upcoming interests of foreign language teaching field.

Employing literature on coursebook analysis and evaluation and informed by the research on multimodality in language teaching materials, this study proposed a conceptual-analytical framework for ...exploring how cultural meaning is conveyed in foreign language teaching materials through the way in which text, task, and image combine in a learning activity. Through the application of the proposed framework, we explored cultural representations found in texts, students' meaning-making opportunities guided by tasks as well as alignments and potential contradictions between verbal and visual messages by analysing images. In doing this, we attempted to evaluate the potential of language teaching materials to cater for diverse groups of learners within a given socio-cultural context. In our investigation, we drew on two types of coursebook evaluation - micro-evaluation and macro-evaluation - which were supplemented by the deductive content analysis. We illustrate how the proposed framework might help teachers evaluate the effectiveness of coursebooks’ use of multiple representations to support student learning and meaning-making.
•A framework for exploring how cultural meaning is conveyed in foreign language teaching materials has been proposed.•The framework was illustrated through a micro-evaluation and a macro-evaluation of a set of teaching materials.•The materials differ in cultural content, opportunities for cultural comparison and types of classroom activities.•The kind of information that is left out or presented in a way that misconstrues reality sets the stage for cultural bias.•Recommendations in the field of materials development and enactment are suggested.
