Celem artykułu recenzyjnego jest krytyczna analiza i ocena monografii naukowej autorstwa Marii Wacławek i Marii Wtorkowskiej pt.: O Polakach i Słoweńcach – w kręgu językowo-kulturowych stereotypów, ...wydanej w Słowenii w 2022 roku.
The forced transition to distance learning in 2020 forced the world scientific community to pay special attention to researching the effectiveness of the methodology for teaching subject disciplines ...in a remote format. In this manuscript, the authors did attempt to study, analyze, and classify various methods of teaching a foreign language (English, French, and German) at MGIMO University. The present research is based not only on a direct professional experience of working at a distance but also on an anonymous survey conducted among students. The purpose of this study is to develop and describe the most effective model of teaching a foreign language in the specified conditions. In addition to the empirical approach - observation of students' work during the semester, the use of experimental control methods, comparison, comparative analysis of the results - the authors also use data from an anonymous survey among students and foreign language teachers, which emphasizes the practical significance and relevance of the study. During the students questioning, it was found out which teaching methods and specific exercises are the most effective in the framework of a distance lesson. The questioning of teachers made it possible to classify statistical results and identify methods that teachers use in teaching a foreign language in a distance format and which could be used by them but are not used. On the basis of the data obtained, the authors conclude that there is a discrepancy between the ideas of teachers and students about the effectiveness of using certain forms of online education. This conclusion will allow in the near future to adjust the methodological and teaching aids for working in a distance format in foreign language classes.
•A growing number of studies are exploring NNSTs’ multilinguality.•NNSTs can develop a reactive multilingual identity due to native-speakerism.•NNSTs in Europe support multilingualism but do not ...always understand it.•Monolingual ideologies are especially prevalent in Asia and the UK.
With many countries now implementing multilingual educational initiatives in schools, there is a need to reconfigure training programs and encourage teachers to develop a multilingual identity so that they can better promote multilingualism among their students. At present, monolingual ideologies dominate the language education landscape, particularly disadvantaging non-native speaker teachers (NNSTs), who are proficient multilinguals by default and who might best embody the successful language learner model for emergent multilinguals. Studies on NNSTs, however, have traditionally focused on their status as deficient native speakers instead of exploring their multilinguality, although this has started to change in recent years. This study represents a critical review of empirical studies (n=84) from 2009–2018 that reflect this change. The review indicates that a growing number of studies have started to document NNSTs’ unique affordances and multilingual practices in the classroom globally, that NNSTs can develop a reactive multilingual identity in response to native-speakerism, and that learners, when engaged by researchers, do recognize the multilingual affordances of NNSTs. The study's findings should contribute to the growing body of research on multilingual teacher identity, affordances, and practices, especially as this concerns NNSTs.

The notion of foreign language teaching enjoyment (FLTE) has recently been introduced to the field of foreign language education as a positive emotion which influences teachers' professional and ...psychological growth. Due to the pure novelty of the concept, scant research attention has been paid to its antecedents in English as a foreign language (EFL) contexts. The present study aims to investigate the extent to which psychological wellbeing and emotion regulation can contribute to FLTE of Iranian EFL teachers. The participants (
= 575) responded to three electronic questionnaires and the collected data were then analyzed through structural equation modeling (SEM). The SEM analysis indicated that Iranian EFL teachers' psychological wellbeing and emotion regulation significantly influenced their FLTE. The findings revealed that psychological wellbeing was a stronger predictor of EFL teachers' FLTE in the Iranian context. The findings were discussed regarding the causes of increasing teaching enjoyment. The results highlighted the importance of applying psychology in language teaching research. Finally, implications and suggestions for future research are offered.
Teachers involved in English as a foreign language (EFL) teaching play a significant role in the process of moving toward educational equity. Teacher cognition is very influential in shaping teacher ...practice and thus affects students' academic performance. However, although the role of EFL teachers as equity agents has been recognized, few studies have explored EFL teachers in-depth in terms of their cognition and practice. Moreover, no review studies have given sufficient attention to the task of elucidating the interrelations between EFL teachers' cognition and practices in the context of educational equity. Therefore, to provide a novel perspective and generate fresh insights into this research field, the current study attempts to explain the connotations of these constructs, highlights the interplay between EFL teachers' equity-oriented cognition and practice, and identifies both experiential and contextual factors that might have an effect throughout the teaching process. Finally, practical implications and directions for teachers, researchers, policy-makers, and social justice leaders who are interested in actualizing education as a means of attaining equity are also discussed.
This article presents a systematic review of the literature on the use of subtitling in the teaching of foreign languages in university contexts in the last five years. First, the conceptual ...framework of audiovisual translation for didactic purposes, its classification and influence on the development of linguistic skills are presented, then the methodology used for the search and compilation of studies. Considering the inclusion and exclusion criteria, fourteen empirical studies were selected and then distributed into four sections according to the type of subtitling they address: intralinguistic, standard interlinguistic, inverse interlinguistic and mixed modalities. The results show that subtitling enhances the acquisition of vocabulary, oral comprehension, oral production and grammatical understanding in foreign languages. In addition, participants report a good reception of the subtitling task.
With the burgeoning of positive psychology, foreign language teaching enjoyment (FLTE) was introduced as a combination of personal and social enjoyment and student appreciation. Despite its critical ...role in language teachers’ professional development and psychological growth, scant qualitative attention has been paid to clarify how it can be developed. Moreover, there needs to be more cross-cultural evidence to clarify the role of contextual and cultural factors in shaping teachers' FLTE. Therefore, this study explored how Iranian and Turkish EFL teachers experienced and developed enjoyment in their teaching careers. The study followed a cross-sectional and cross-cultural perspective as a research design. Purposeful and convenience sampling strategies were used to reach the target participants, and there were 24 Turkish EFL teachers and 22 Iranian EFL teachers in the study. An online survey method involving open-ended questions was employed to collect data. Thematic analysis was performed to interpret the data. The FLTE among Iranian and Turkish teachers were depicted under the main themes of feelings, enhancing factors, challenges, individual coping strategies, and suggested solutions. The findings implied the dynamic nature of FLTE. Based on the findings, several implications were highlighted to enhance the FLTE of Iranian and Turkish EFL teachers in educational contexts.
•Cross-cultural studies can clarify the role of contextual and cultural factors in shaping teachers' FLTE.•Iranian and Turkish EFL teachers experienced and developed enjoyment in their teaching careers based on their work environment.•Student motivation was a key factor in determining both Turkish and Iranian EFL teachers' enjoyment.•Turkish EFL teachers find communication with the colleagues and ongoing professional development chances as solutions to keep their FLTE during the career.•Iranian EFL teachers tried to focus on their professional problems and understand their learners' needs as effective mechanism for enhancing their FLTE.

Abstract We still lack a tradition of courses on medical humanities designed for medical students, though medical schools in the United States or Western Europe included such courses in their ...academic curricula more than half a century ago. Such courses have proven their effectiveness in the training of a future doctor, providing them with better abilities to communicate, observe and develop empathy towards the patient. This paper wants to address the problem of the need to deliver such courses that would be even more welcome if all the interdisciplinary topics would gather to give their worthy opinion and perspective on the problem of medical humanities. Such an attempt is still far from being accomplished; therefore, the paper is going to present an attempt to develop an elective course devoted to the topic of medical humanities. With foreign language teachers in charge, such a course could only offer a limited perspective, using fiction as a tool to deal with the students’ cultural training, development of communication skills and understanding of the role of storytelling in medicine. The paper is going to present some examples that can be used in such an elective course on medical humanities in order to reach the above-mentioned goals.
Phraseology has established itself as an independent academic discipline. Its applied subdiscipline, phraseodidactics, has developed somewhat delayed, but just as intensively. The articles in this ...volume analyze the current state of German phraseodidactics using examples and by providing a cross-section of phraseodidactic schools of thought, discourses, theoretical modellings, and methodological approaches.
In this paper, we propose a new learning model that utilizes machine translation and large language models. While English education has traditionally been conducted through the relationship between ...English teachers and learners, replacing English teachers with machine translation and large language models may offer the potential to provide an equally or even more efficient and high-quality learning environment. The authors have developed a browser-based service to experience this educational environment for Japanese. To experience a new learning model that is high quality and efficient, we have implemented DeepL, a machine translation service that can translate with high accuracy, and ChatGPT, which uses a large language model that can generate natural sentences and adapt to a variety of tasks interactively. By combining these advanced services, it is now possible to provide explanations of the English translations and to evaluate the essays. This newly developed service is currently being experimentally used in English classes at a Japanese university. Interviews with users who used it revealed that they were easily exposed to English above their level. In other words, the results suggest that this proposed model can provide a better environment for English utilization than teachers. The developed service is available to anyone at the following URL.
