Objective: The aim of this article is to study the associations between healthy lifestyle in old age and decline in physical, psychological, cognitive, and social functioning. Method: A ...population-based sample of 3,107 Dutch men and women aged 55 and 85 years (1992/1993; Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam) was used with five 3-yeary follow-up examinations. Lifestyle score, based on smoking status, alcohol consumption, physical activity, and body mass index (BMI), ranged from 0 (unhealthy) to 4 (healthy). Outcomes included gait speed, depressive symptoms, cognitive status, and social contacts. Results: Persons with a healthy lifestyle had a 10.6% slower decline in gait speed (0.04 m/s, 95% confidence interval CI = 0.03, 0.05), 10.8% slower increase in depressive symptoms (–1.07 –1.70, –0.44), a 1.8% slower decline in cognitive functioning (0.47 0.23, 0.70), and a 4.9% slower decline in social contacts (0.58 0.01, 1.15) compared with persons with no or one healthy lifestyle factor. Discussion: A healthy lifestyle benefits physical, psychological, cognitive, and social functioning up to very old age.

Schizophrenia is associated with high rates of global, social and occupational functional impairments. While prior meta-analyses have extensively examined the impact of exercise on physical and ...mental health, the impact on functioning in schizophrenia have yet to be fully established. This review aimed to update the evidence base regarding the impact of exercise on functioning in schizophrenia, and explore moderators of effect.
A systematic search was conducted to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of exercise evaluating global functioning versus any comparator in people with schizophrenia; between group meta-analyses of global functioning (and secondary – social, living skills, occupational, adverse events) were computed using a random effects model. Subgroup analyses based on diagnosis and aspects of the intervention were conducted.
18 full text articles were included, involving 734 participants. A moderate impact of exercise on global functioning was found (g = 0.40, 95 % C·I. = 0.12 to 0.69, p = 0.006), with a moderate impact of exercise on social (N = 5, g = 0.54 95 % C.I = 0.16 to 0.9 p = 0.005), and daily living functioning (N = 3, g = 0.65, 95 % C.I. = 0.07 to 1.22, p = 0.005).
There is good evidence that exercise can improve the global functioning of people with schizophrenia, with preliminary evidence for social and daily living skills; exercise should be considered an important adjunct to usual care. Higher impacts on global functioning were seen in aerobic interventions and of at least moderate to vigorous intensity. More research is required into resistance training, in early psychosis cohorts and to evaluate the comparison of exercise with other established psychosocial therapies.

Youth at ...CHR for psychosis often demonstrate significant negative symptoms and poor functioning, though the magnitude and direction of the relationship between the two remains unknown. The objective of this systematic review is to summarize the relationship between negative symptoms and functioning in CHR samples.
Electronic databases CINAHL, EBM, Embase, MEDLINE, and PsycINFO were searched from inception. Studies were selected if they included any study that reported a relationship between negative symptoms and functioning in youth at clinical high risk (CHR). The correlation coefficient r was converted to Cohen's d, and all random-effects meta-analyses were performed using the transformed values.
Forty-one studies met the inclusion criteria, including a total of 4574 individuals at CHR for psychosis. Negative symptom total scores were significantly associated with poorer global functioning (d, -1.40; 95% CI, -1.82 to -0.98; I = 79.4%; p < .001 9 studies, n = 782), social functioning (d, -1.10; 95% CI, -1.27 to -0.93; I = 10.40%; p < .001 12 studies, n = 811), and role functioning (d, -0.96; 95% CI, -1.17 to -0.76; I = 41.1%; p < .001 9 studies, n = 881). In addition, negative symptoms were consistently associated with poor premorbid functioning. When examining negative symptom domains, avolition, anhedonia, and blunted affect were each significantly and independently associated with poorer social functioning and role functioning. In terms of prediction models, negative symptoms contributed to the prediction of lower functioning across multiple studies.
This meta-analysis demonstrates a strong relationship between negative symptoms and functioning in youth at clinical high risk for psychosis.
Social difficulties are a key aspect of autism, but the intervening factors are still poorly understood. This study had two objectives: to compare the profile of ToM skills, executive functioning ...(EF), and pragmatic competence (PC) of children with high-functioning autism (HFA) and children with typical development (TD), and analyze their mediator role in social functioning. The participants were 52 children with HFA and 37 children with TD matched on age, intelligence quotient, and expressive vocabulary. Significant differences were found on measures of ToM, both explicit and applied, EF, and PC between children with HFA and TD. Multiple mediation analysis revealed that applied ToM skills and PC mediated the relations between autism symptoms and social functioning. Implications for social cognitive interventions to address these findings are discussed.

How closely does variability in ecologically important traits reflect evolutionary divergence? The use of phylogenetic diversity (PD) to predict biodiversity effects on ecosystem functioning, and ...more generally the use of phylogenetic information in community ecology, depends in part on the answer to this question. However, comparisons of the predictive power of phylogenetic diversity and functional diversity (FD) have not been conducted across a range of experiments. To address how phylogenetic diversity and functional trait variation control biodiversity effects on biomass production, we summarized the results of 29 grassland plant experiments where both the phylogeny of plant species used in the experiments is well described and where extensive trait data are available. Functional trait variation was only partially related to phylogenetic distances between species, and the resulting FD values therefore correlate only partially with PD. Despite these differences, FD and PD predicted biodiversity effects across all experiments with similar strength, including in subsets that excluded plots with legumes and that focused on fertilization experiments. Two- and three-trait combinations of the five traits used here (leaf nitrogen percentage, height, specific root length, leaf mass per unit area, and nitrogen fixation) resulted in the FD values with the greatest predictive power. Both PD and FD can be valuable predictors of the effect of biodiversity on ecosystem functioning, which suggests that a focus on both community trait diversity and evolutionary history can improve understanding of the consequences of biodiversity loss.

Objectives
The aims of the present study were to confirm the impact of residual symptoms on overall functioning in a large sample of euthymic patients with bipolar disorder in real‐life conditions ...and to explore the relationship between residual symptoms and specific areas of functional impairment.
Methods
This was a multicenter, cross‐sectional, non‐interventional study of euthymic outpatients with bipolar disorder. The Functioning Assessment Short Test was used to assess overall and specific domains of functioning (autonomy, occupational functioning, cognitive functioning, financial issues, interpersonal relationships, and leisure time). Various residual symptoms were assessed (residual mood symptoms, emotional dysregulation, sleep and sexual disorders, stigma, and perceived cognitive impairment). Logistic regression was used to determine the best model of association between functional domains and residual symptoms.
Results
Almost half of the 468 patients included (42%) had poor overall functioning. Residual depressive symptoms appeared to have an impact on overall functioning and in nearly all areas of functioning. In addition, specific residual symptoms had significantly more negative effects on some domains of functioning in euthymic patients with bipolar disorder (residual manic symptoms and occupational stigma on autonomy, emotional inhibition on occupational functioning, residual manic symptoms on financial issues, family stigma on interpersonal relationships, and sexual function and occupational stigma on leisure time).
Conclusions
Our findings highlight the importance of evaluating overall functioning in clinical practice as well as functional domains. They also indicate that some residuals symptoms in patients with bipolar disorder should be targeted in personalized treatment plans, in order to improve functioning in the domains in which the patient is most impaired.

This study validated the Brief Inventory of Psychosocial Functioning (B-IPF), an abridged version of the 80-item Inventory of Psychosocial Functioning (IPF; Bovin et al., 2018). The B-IPF-a 7-item ...self-report questionnaire that assesses posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)-related psychosocial functional impairment-was developed for use in settings in which the full IPF would be too time intensive to administer. In this study, we examined the psychometric properties of the B-IPF among a sample of 362 veterans recruited from 2 Veterans Affairs hospitals. The B-IPF demonstrated high internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = .84) and adequate test-retest reliability (r = .65, p < .001). The B-IPF was strongly correlated with the IPF (r = .71, p < .01) and had higher correlations with measures of mental health impairment and quality of life (all rs > ∥.50∥; all ps < .001) than with a measure of physical health impairment (i.e., the Physical Component Summary; r = −.34; p < .001), which demonstrated strong construct validity. In addition, the B-IPF displayed strong criterion-related validity, with higher correlations with a PTSD symptom measure, (r = .63, p < .05), and measures of other internalizing disorders (all rs > .44; all ps < .05) and a lower correlation with a measure of an externalizing disorder (r = .14; p < .05). These results indicate that the B-IPF is a reliable and valid instrument for assessing PTSD-related impairment. The strong psychometric properties of the instrument, in addition to its length, make it ideal for settings in which time is a factor.

To investigate functioning, activity and disability in people with post-COVID syndrome.
Cross-sectional.
Participants were recruited online via Facebook and a stakeholders' organization for ...post-COVID syndrome in Sweden.
Sociodemographic data and International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF)-based questionnaire were collected via an online platform and analysed.
A total of 100 participants were included (mean age 44.5 years, 82% women, 61% with higher education, and 56% working full- or part-time). For the ICF component Body Functions, the most impaired functions were: fatigability and energy drive (98-99%); higher cognitive functions (74-94%); sleep functions (98%); muscle functions (93%); respiratory functions (92%); heart functions (82%); emotional functions (80%); sexual functions (77%); pain problems (56-90%); and thermoregulatory functions (68%). For the component Activity, the most frequent limitations were: handling stressful situations (98%); remunerative employment (95%); recreation and leisure (94%); climbing the stairs (94%); doing housework (84%); and informal socializing (64%). The most frequent degrees of impairment/limitations were light and moderate, except for severe-complete for fatigue, higher cognitive functions, multitasking, handling stressful situations; and recreation and leisure activities.
Post-COVID syndrome following a mild COVID-19 infection can result in impaired body functions and activities. These results support the importance of a multidisciplinary rehabilitation approach for these patients.

Persistent cognitive deficits are prevalent during all stages of bipolar disorder (BD). However, few studies have examined subjective cognitive complaints in patients with BD. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and relevant factors of subjective cognitive functioning and its potential effects on predicting psychosocial functioning and suicidal ideation in BD. Ninety-two patients with BD type I (including 42 depressed patients and 50 euthymic patients) and 60 healthy individuals were recruited for this study. All participants were assessed with a battery of neuropsychological tests examining attention and processing speed, visual memory, working memory and executive functions, as well as the Cognitive Complaints in Bipolar Disorder Rating Assessment, the Global Assessment of Functioning scale and the Beck Scale for Suicide Ideation. Bipolar patients exhibited worse subjective cognitive dysfunction compared with healthy individuals, and depressed patients expressed more cognitive complaints than euthymic bipolar patients. In bipolar group, psychosocial functioning, suicidal ideation and occupational status were the main relevant factors of subjective cognitive functioning. Subjective cognitive functioning could also predict psychosocial functioning and suicidal ideation. Depressive symptoms moderated the associations between objective cognitive functioning and suicidal ideation, but could not moderate the correlations between cognitive functioning and psychosocial functioning. These findings suggest that subjective cognitive assessment should be further emphasized in clinical practice.
