Digital libraries allow not only to improve the preservation of documents and to facilitate access by users, but also to experiment with new methods; for example, it is possible to examine the ...statistical relationships between the contents of thousands of documents in a short time, an operation almost inaccessible to traditional methods. The key step remains that of converting from analogue support, paper or microfilm, to the digital one, including the transformation of images of the printed text into digital text: only in this way is it possible to statistically analyze those texts, an analysis that cannot be separated from the historical context of their production and from other sources. In this article, we describe in detail the process of creating a digital corpus formed by Italian newspapers published in Gorizia between 1873 and 1914. This includes digitization, editable text extraction, annotation process and statistical analysis of the resulting time series. The data thus obtained are compared with a corpus of Slovenian newspapers printed in the same city and at the same time, already digitized by the Slovene National Library. The analysis of the 47.466 pages of Italian newspapers allows us to demonstrate the type of information that can be extracted from a digital corpus, highlighting the importance of operating within a historical and comparative context. This example of multilingual digital humanism allows us to identify the statistical traces of profound cultural transitions that have taken place in a very complex geographical area and historical period, whose study cannot ignore a particular attention to cultural, technological and social transformations.
In this essay we aim to examine the treatment of anglicisms at the morphological level to observe whether anglicisms have influenced the morphological structures of the Italian language, that is, if they are inserted in the texts respecting the grammatical rules of Italian or not; this allows us to evaluate the effect that the increasing use of anglicisms might have on the morphological system of Italian. The subject of study are the articles taken from the front pages of 'La Stampa' in the first ten days of January of the years 1980, 1985, 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005 and 2010. Research has shown that the use of non-adapted Anglicisms is morphologically arbitrary, as it has been noted that the Italian grammatical rules are sometimes respected and sometimes not. Moreover, the influence of English is not limited to lexical interference, but also extends to produce effects on the Italian language system.
The National Central Library of Rome, for the wealth of the periodic collections it conserved, since 1908 has been invested with the role of establishing and conserving the National Collection of ...periodical publications (Emeroteca). This task, arising from the specific attentions to the periodicals by director Domenico Gnoli and enhanced by his successor Giuliano Bonazzi, which also corresponded to the creation of a rich hall of newspapers and magazines, exposed to public consultation, went with the years fading. The participation of the Library, as coordinator, in the Google Books project that allowed the digitization of all Italian periodicals not subject to copyright restrictions, and the launch of a massive digitization campaign of the microfilms of the owned newspapers allow to rethink the original project and to create a digital national library for periodicals and newspapers to be constantly enriched with the participation of other institutions interested in the project.
Now reissued and retypeset, this canonical book explores the role of language and images in newspaper, radio, online and television news. The authors introduce useful frameworks for analysing ...language, image and the interaction between the two, and illustrate these with authentic news stories from around the English-speaking world, ranging from the Oktoberfest to environmental disasters to the killing of Osama bin Laden. This analysis persuasively illustrates how events are retold in the news and made ‘newsworthy' through both language and image. This clearly written and accessible introduction to news discourse is essential reading for students, lecturers and researchers in linguistics, media and journalism studies and semiotics.
Written by a former news reporter and editor, News Talk gives us an insider's view of the media, showing how journalists select and construct their news stories. Colleen Cotter goes behind the ...scenes, revealing how language is chosen and shaped by news staff into the stories we read and hear. Tracing news stories from start to finish, she shows how the actions of journalists and editors - and the limitations of news writing formulas - may distort a story that was prepared with the most determined effort to be fair and accurate. Using insights from both linguistics and journalism, News Talk is a remarkable picture of a hidden world and its working practices on both sides of the Atlantic. It will interest those involved in language study, media and communication studies and those who want to understand how media shape our language and our view of the world.
‘Spigolare’, significa raccogliere le spighe rimaste sul terreno dopo la mietitura. Qui le ‘spigolature’ hanno il senso di raccogliere almeno una parte di quanto è rimasto su giornali e riviste ...latino-americane presenti nell’ampio spazio elettronico, relativamente a Pier Paolo Pasolini, al fine di ricostruire la storia dell’accoglienza dello scrittore e della sua opera nel continente americano, dall’Argentina al Messico, includendo il Brasile.Gleanings: Pier Paolo Pasolini and Latin-America‘To glean’ means to gather the ears of wheat left behind on the soil after harvest. In our context ‘gleaning’ carries the meaning of gathering part of the material concerning Pier Paolo Pasolini as it appeared in latin-american journals and reviews and is now available in the wideness of the web. The aim is to reestablish the history of the author’s reception in Latin America – from Argentina to Mexico, there including Brazil.
Within the larger debate over Italians' attitudes toward the decision to join the Second World War on Germany's side, and their subsequent attitude toward fighting alongside the Nazis, the question ...of the role played by the Roman Catholic Church remains controversial. By focusing on Italy's three major Catholic daily newspapers for the years 1939 to 1943, and on the behind-the-scenes actions of the Fascist authorities, we here show one of the principal ways that the institutional Church communicated to Italy's Catholics the proper attitudes to take toward the war. The active role played by the papers and their editors in urging Italian Catholic support for the Axis cause is made clear. We examine the Bologna-based L'Avvenire d'Italia, the Rome-based L'Avvenire, and the Milan-based L'Italia, along with a variety of government and church-related archives.

The present article takes into exam the French-Italian literary controversy that took place in 1765 and which, despite its brief duration, revived the national sentiment in a wide portion of the ...Italian cultured world. The dispute began in response to an anonymous "Lettre", although sent by the French Alexandre Deleyre (1726-1797), published on march 1765 in the Parisian journal "Gazette littéraire de l’Europe": according to the controversial Encyclopedist, eighteenth century Italy was in full moral, cultural, political and economic decadence. The Italian poet Agostino Paradisi il Giovane (1736-1783) sent to the Venetian journal «La Minerva» a very well informed anonymous "Epistola". It was printed on october 1765, and is to be considered the clearest and most thoughtful response from the Italian side to Deleyre’s denounces and accusations.
