The safe storage and handling of plastic objects presents a pressing and often overlooked problem in many library and archival collections. Plastics are notoriously difficult to care for because they ...can deteriorate faster than other materials in archival collections. The so-called “malignant” plastics can also produce harmful degradation products that damage surrounding materials, including photographs and papers. Part of the issue is the myriad available tools for plastics identification, which can be both cumbersome and daunting. The other is that ideal storage environments for plastics recommended in the preservation literature are often difficult to achieve due to the accessibility needs and space constraints faced by many libraries and archives. This article introduces a current project at New York University Libraries that evaluates existing recommendations for the identification and housing of plastics, and provides guidelines for making scalable housing types that support user access.

La producción de mapas, planos y dibujos realizada después de la ocupación británica de La Habana se centró principalmente en cuestiones militares. Hubo que esperar hasta fines del siglo XVIII para que los trabajos desarrollados en obras civiles y religiosas alcanzaran cuantitativamente el realizado en obras militares. En el presente trabajo se realiza una clasificación tipológica del material gráfico elaborado durante el período, así como se presenta unas primeras apreciaciones al respecto.
The Library of Congress' Thesaurus for Graphic Materials (TGM) is one of the major thesauri used for indexing visual materials. Developed by the Library's Prints and Photographs Division (P&P) in the ...1980s, the thesaurus has become an essential tool for numerous libraries, archives, and historical societies that catalog images, in the United States and abroad. This article will trace the history, development, and current use of TGM in P&P and other institutions, and take a look at its future, addressing subject indexing guidelines and principles along the way.

Works on paper depicting Russian and Eastern European subjects at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History include fine art and popular prints, photographs, posters, ...bookplates, sheet music, and other illustrations. This article discusses these works in the context of French influences on Russian art as well as documenting some aspects of the representation of US-Russian relations in illustrated popular media. It also describes an important group of prints and photographs in the Gustavus V. Fox Collection of Russian "souvenirs," acquired as a diplomatic gift in 1866 and donated to the Smithsonian in 1909.
