Drawing on the theory of resilience, and on an international sample of 45 predominantly small hospitality businesses, this exploratory study extends knowledge about the key concerns, ways of coping, and the changes and adjustments undertaken by these firms’ owners and managers during the COVID-19 outbreak. The various emergent relationships between the findings and the considered conceptual underpinnings of the literature on resilience, revealed nine theoretical dimensions. These dimensions critically illuminate and extend understanding concerning the actions and alternatives owners-managers resorted to when confronted with an extreme context. For instance, with financial impacts and uncertainty being predominant issues among participants, over one-third indicated actioning alternative measures to create much-needed revenue streams, and preparing for a new post-COVID-19 operational regime, respectively. Furthermore, 60 percent recognised making changes to the day-to-day running of the business to respond to initial impacts, or biding time in anticipation of a changing business and legal environment.

Touring Pacific Cultures captures the central importance of tourism to the visual, material and performed cultures of the Pacific region. The Internet and cloud computing changed the way business operate. Standardised web-based applications simplify data interchange which allow internal applications and business partners systems to become interconnected and interoperable. This study conceptualises the smart and agile hospitality enterprises of the future, and proposes a smart hospitality ecosystem that adds value to all stakeholders. Internal data from applications among all stakeholders, consolidated with external environment context form the hospitality big data on the cloud that enables members to use business intelligence analysis to generate scenarios that enhance revenue management performance. By connecting to smart tourism network, sensors and content extractors can assist to collect external information, and beacons to deliver context-based promotion messages and add value. The proposed model enables fully integrated applications, using big data to enhance hospitality decision making as well as strengthen competitiveness and improve strategies performance.

Despite the “perfect storm” of older employees leaving the workforce and younger hospitality employees entering the hospitality industry, there has not been a single study in the hospitality literature investigating Generation Z’s attitudes towards working in the hospitality industry. Understanding this future hospitality workforce is pivotal as empirical studies of past generations (Baby-boomers, Generation X and Generation Y) have reported high turnover patterns among the hospitality workforce to be a major human resource problem in this dynamic industry. This research evaluated the usefulness of the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) as the theoretical framework to distill and unpack Generation Z’s perceptions (n = 71) about working in the hospitality industry. Results suggest Generation Z viewed overall positive attitudes about the hospitality industry such as exciting, a people’s industry with travel opportunities along with certain challenges such as dealing with people, long/odd hours and potential workplace health and safety issues.

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to undertake a “real-time” assessment of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the right to participate in hospitality and tourism and to illustrate where such ...rights are under threat.
Design/methodology/approach
This discussion is based on a review of current events, assessed through interpretation of a human rights lens.
Findings
Rights to participate in hospitality and tourism, particularly in parts of Asia, Europe and North America, were affected on a scale unprecedented in peacetime.
Research limitations/implications
The rights to participate in hospitality and tourism have been challenged as never before. The big questions that will need to be answered going forward are the extent to which such rights will be restored, post-COVID-19.
Originality/value
This is a “real-time” assessment and will require re-visiting as events unfold over the coming months and years.
Hospitality exists from the grassroots level of society upward and plays a central role in the global economy. For the many organizations active in this sector and the societies they are based in, ...innovation in hospitality services is considered their lifeblood. Recent advancements in digitalization, artificial intelligence, robotics, communications technologies, and platform-based new business models are transforming the global business environment at a rapid pace. However, unlike many other service sectors, the hospitality and tourism sectors are unique in their focus on people, experiences, and the wider ecosystem (i.e., society and the environment). The unique makeup of the hospitality sector, therefore, demands a distinctive approach to innovation. This study aims to examine service innovation with a focus on the hospitality sector. It provides a holistic theoretical framework and proposes an agenda for future research. The framework suggests the hospitality experience to be at the core of innovation in this sector. Consequently, hospitality firms must focus on creating value through both technological and nontechnological innovation. This innovation must be facilitated in a symbiotic manner, with a strong focus on people at its center, showcasing the “soul” of the hospitality across the extended “footprints” of the experience.
