Jan. 2--"Ready to go" is how Ed Hruska describes himself on the eve of starting a new term on the Rochester City Council. Even the past two months have been a time for gaining experience. Hruska ...estimates he's spent 10 to 20 hours per week attending meetings, talking to constituents, and touching on some of the duties he'll be fully responsible for starting this week. Come budget time next winter, Hruska plans to assemble a team of savvy residents to help him review the budget document and raise questions.

Oct. 29--NORMAL -- The Hruska and Poole families work on a lot of projects together. They added a room and a deck to the David Hruska and Lyn Hruska family home on their farm at Normal's west edge ...and built a screened-in porch for Lyn's sister, Jenny Poole, who also lives in Normal. Lyn, Jenny and their older sister, Nan Cook of Bloomington, took vacation time from work to help with harvest. Jenny is a safety specialist with Growmark Inc. and Nan works at the General Electric factory in Bloomington and is a tax specialist with H&R Block. On most days during corn harvest, David drives the combine, Ron Poole drives the grain truck, and Lyn and Jenny drive a tractor that pulls a grain wagon.

Jun. 27--COLUMBUS -- Youngsters searching for answers can find them through the Columbus Public Library's "Get a Clue at Your Library" summer reading program. Kate Smith, 5, who attended the event ...with her mom, said the performance was "pretty awesome." Her favorite part was watching Jason Huneke ride a unicycle. Joshua Hergott, 7, is in his fourth year of the summer reading program. His mother, Laurie Hergott, said she sees the value of having her son involved in it. "It helps him keep up his reading skills. It's great entertainment. I'd rather he would read a book than watch TV all day," she said.
