This study assessed the relationship between the recharge of the unconfined sedimentary Adamantina Aquifer and its discharge into the Batalha River in a small basin of 125 km2 that drains the ...municipalities of Bauru, Agudos and Piratininga (SP, Brazil). According to the Eckhardt Flow Separation Filters and Soil Moisture Accounting Procedure methods, the recharge was 312.6 mm/yr and 232.0 mm/yr, respectively; and 286.2 mm/yr to the modified-Thornthwaite method for the 2000-2018 period. Recharge values prone to converge as more extended periods are analyzed (ideally 18 years) because the sensitivities to a specific parameter tend to be mitigated over time. With the integration of the methods, we established how changes in land-use impact the aquifer recharge and, thus, the discharges and the behavior of the river's recession curve. Areas used to cultivate sugar cane (193 mm/yr), eucalyptus (150 mm/yr), or to urbanization (72 mm/yr) exert control over aquifer recharge even more than topography or type of soil. The combined and integrated use of three simple techniques allows them to be used for land-use planning and assessment of water availability in small hydrographic basins when hydrological data are scarce.
RESUMO Reservatórios construídos em cursos d’água estão sujeitos a algum grau de assoreamento. Por isso, é importante a estimativa do volume de sedimentos acumulados, visto que esse depósito pode ...interferir nas funções do reservatório. Uma forma de se fazer isso é utilizando modelos físicos. Entretanto, a partir da literatura existente na área não é possível responder a algumas questões metodológicas que surgem em uma simulação física do assoreamento, como: qual vazão e descarga sólida utilizar? Simular um hidrograma ou uma vazão constante? Assim, esse trabalho teve como objetivo propor uma metodologia de simulação do assoreamento em modelos físicos, de forma que ao se utilizar essa metodologia o assoreamento observado no modelo reduzido pudesse representar o do protótipo. A partir de simulações numéricas e experimentais, optou-se por simular no modelo físico as vazões médias das ondas que compreendiam as vazões máximas. O tempo de escoamento de cada vazão foi de 30 minutos e as descargas sólidas totais utilizadas foram às referentes às vazões médias anuais. Utilizando-se essa metodologia, promoveu-se a simulação do assoreamento no modelo reduzido para o período entre 2013 e 2017, sendo que o resultado obtido foi próximo ao do protótipo, o que indica que a metodologia proposta permitiu representar no modelo reduzido o fenômeno do assoreamento ocorrido no reservatório real.
ABSTRACT Reservoirs built in watercourses are subject to some degree of silting. Therefore, it is important to estimate the volume of sediment accumulated, since this deposit may interfere with the functions of the reservoir. One way to do this is by using physical models. However, from the existing literature in the area it is not possible to answer some methodological questions that arise in a physical simulation of the silting, such as: which flow and solid discharge to use? Simulate a hydrogram or constant flow? Thus, this work had as objective to propose a simulation methodology of the silting in physical models, so that when using this methodology the observed siltation in the reduced model could represent the one of the prototype. From numerical and experimental simulations, it was chosen to simulate in the physical model the average flows of the waves that comprised the maximum flows. The flow time of each flow was 30 minutes and the total solid discharges used were those referring to the annual average flow rates. Using this methodology, simulation of sedimentation in the reduced model was promoted for the period between 2013 and 2017, and the result obtained was close to that of the prototype, which indicates that the proposed methodology allowed to represent in the reduced model the phenomenon of sedimentation occurred in the actual reservoir.
Estimating groundwater recharge is crucial to ensuring the proper management of aquifers. In this study, net regional recharge and spatial potential recharge are estimated at four watersheds within ...the Charlevoix-Haute-Côte-Nord (CHCN) regions, Quebec Province, Canada. Four methods are applied based on available data. The first two approaches are regional water budget methods. These two methods differ in their estimation of vertical inflow (VI), which is estimated from two hydrological models: GR4J and HYDROTEL. The third method estimates potential recharge spatially over the study area. Finally, the streamflow data are analysed using the Eckhardt baseflow separation method to obtain an estimation of recharge, assuming that discharge is equal to recharge. According to the results of all investigated methods, the mean annual recharge for the CHCN region is approximately 183 mm, which is 18% of the total annual precipitation (P). The discussion section highlights uncertainties due to the assumptions of each method and the reliability of the data.

The paper deals with the analysis of a river’s regime of a small watercourse and the evaluation of its changes after the construction of a small water reservoir. The aim of the work was to analyse 12 ...years of flow rate measurements at two profiles of a small watercourse, between which a small water reservoir was built, in the middle of the period of the measurements. The analysis uses traditional characteristics (average flow rate, discharge volume), as well as modern indices from applied hydrology (Richards-Baker flashiness index, hydrogram pulse analysis), which study the variability of the flow rate in hourly and daily intervals. The evaluation showed that at the average flow rate, the effect of the water reservoir was the smoothening of the peak flow rates and prolonging the duration of the discharge waves. At higher flow rates, the water reservoir causes a delay in the culmination and in terms of discharge balance causes a decreased discharge volume, in particular during the vegetation period.
Resumen: Los modelos hidrológicos son una opción rápida y de bajo costo para estimar el escurrimiento superficial en un evento de lluvia-escorrentía en cuencas sin aforos, previo a su uso los modelos ...deben ser evaluados; la certidumbre de sus resultados es de utilidad en la definición de políticas acertadas para un manejo racional del recurso agua. El objetivo de esta investigación fue evaluar el grado de ajuste del modelo de escurrimiento de curva numérica del extinto Servicio de Conservación de Suelos de EE. UU. (SCS‑CN) y del modelo de infiltración de Green-Ampt (GA) para reproducir hidrogramas de escurrimiento directo en cuencas no aforadas, los cuales se integraron en un modelo hidrológico estructurado en el software HEC-HMS. Se eligieron siete eventos de lluvia bien definidos y uno prolongado con precipitaciones intermitentes ocurridos en la cuenca río Chapingo, México. En el análisis del conjunto de los ocho eventos, el modelo SCS-CN estimó mejor el volumen total escurrido (RMSE de 5430 m3), mientras que el de GA estimó mejor el gasto pico (RMSE de 0.72 m3 s‑1). El modelo de GA estimó mejor los hidrogramas de tres eventos de lluvia bien definidos cuyos volúmenes escurridos fueron mayores que 8.31 × 103 m3 y, Qp ≥ 1.93 m3 s-1, con una RMSE de 0.14 a 0.43 m3 s-1, MRE de 0.20 a 0.28 y una eficiencia de Nash-Sutcliffe de 0.92 a 0.95. En los otros cuatro eventos bien definidos, con volúmenes escurridos inferiores a 6.35 × 103 m3 y Qp ≤ 1.44 m3 s-1 ambos modelos estimaron de forma idéntica y sin eficacia los hidrogramas, con un índice de Nash-Sutcliffe de -1.38 a -7.34. La estimación del hidrograma del evento prolongado, resultó idéntica en ambos modelos, con una RMSE de 0.07 m3 s-1, un MRE de 0.35 y una eficiencia de Nash-Sutcliffe de 0.71.
O manejo do solo em cultivos perenes, como pomares, influencia a erosão hídrica. O presente estudo avaliou as perdas de solo e água sob chuva simulada em um Latossolo, em pomar de maçã, entre os ...meses de agosto de 2007 e abril de 2008, na estação experimental de fruticultura de clima temperado da Embrapa Uva e Vinho, em Vacaria (RS). O trabalho foi conduzido em parcelas experimentais de 3,5 x 11 m, sob chuvas com 1 h de duração e intensidade constante ao longo delas, com variação de 70 a 88 mm h-1 entre uma chuva e outra. Os sistemas de manejo estudados foram: 1) capina manual sob a copa das plantas e solo coberto com gramíneas e leguminosas no restante da área (ST); 2) aveia não dessecada, em que as sementes foram incorporadas ao solo, com capina manual em toda a área, dois meses antes do início dos testes de chuva (AN); 3) aveia dessecada quimicamente sete dias antes do início dos testes de chuva, em que as sementes foram incorporadas ao solo com enxada rotativa em toda a área, dois meses antes do início dos testes (AD); e 4) solo sem cobertura, em que a vegetação, após ter sido dessecada, foi removida da superfície do solo em toda a área com capina manual, um dia antes de iniciar os testes de chuva (SC). A forma de manejo da superfície do solo e o número de chuvas influenciaram a erosão hídrica; as perdas de solo variaram amplamente, enquanto as perdas de água apresentaram menor variação. Apesar da mobilização do solo para implantação de aveia, os tratamentos AN e AD com esse cultivo mostraram a mesma eficácia de controle da erosão em relação ao tratamento ST, em que o solo foi mobilizado apenas sob a copa das plantas. A eliminação da cobertura do solo no tratamento SC aumentou expressivamente as perdas de solo em relação aos tratamentos com cobertura; no que se refere às perdas de água, a diferença foi menor. O tempo de ocorrência do escoamento superficial influenciou a perda de solo; observou-se aumento dessa variável com o aumento do tempo de enxurrada até certo momento, a partir do qual diminuiu, independentemente do tratamento; a perda de água aumentou até certo momento e estabilizou. Houve relação inversa entre razão de perda de solo e razão de perda de água, independentemente do tipo de cobertura do solo e do sistema de manejo sob as macieiras. O modelo exponencial ajustou-se a essa relação.

This study evaluated soil and water losses from an Oxisol under simulated rain, from August 2007 to April 2008, at the experimental station of Embrapa Uva e Vinho, in Vacaria (RS). On the 3.5 m x 11 m plots, rains of one hour were simulated at a constant intensity of 70 to 88 mm h-1. In the apple orchard, the following soil management systems were studied: i) manual weeding under apple trees and spontaneous grass and legume cover in the rest of the area (ST), ii) undesiccated oat cover, hoeing the seeds into the soil at weeding in the entire area, two months before the first rain test (NO), iii) oat cover chemically desiccated seven days before the first rain test, planted by a rotary hoe to incorporate seeds into the soil in the entire area, two months before the tests (DO); and iv) uncovered soil with removal of the previously desiccated spontaneous cover from the soil surface by weeding the entire area with a hoe, one day before each rain test (BS). The management systems related to the soil cover in the apple orchard and the rain tests influenced water erosion. Soil losses varied considerably in the treatments, more than water losses. Even with soil mobilization in the entire area for oat planting in the NO and DO treatments the control effectiveness of water erosion was equal to the ST treatment in which the soil was mobilized only under the trees. The removal of the soil cover from under apple trees greatly increased soil losses in relation to the cover maintenance, but had only little influence on water losses. The runoff duration influenced soil loss; an increase of this variable was observed with increasing runoff duration until a certain moment and, from then on, it decreased independently of the treatment; water loss increased until a certain moment and stabilized. An inverse relationship was observed between soil and water losses, independently of the soil management system under apple trees, adjusting to an exponential model.
Human beings have always required the knowledge of the amounts of water that flows through rivers in order to take advantage of it, as well as to prevent and reduce flood related problems. ...Furthermore, the global heating is originating climatic changes that influence the rain patterns as well as the availability of the hydric resources. In this way, it is necessary to monitorize permanently the hydrographic basins in order to detect and correct possible alterations.This work deals with the design of a digital flow meter to measure the volume of water flowing in a river which allows collecting information. The process is based on the detection of the water’s current velocity through a cross-section of a river. It was used a helix with an effect hall sensor coupled to it to measure the velocity. The river’s depth is measured with a pressure sensor conveniently adjusted. Signals are coupled to a microcontroller which processes, storages and visualizes the information locally, transferring it to a computer in order to be analyzed by the final user. The text includes the prototype’s structure as well as the most relevant results of the calibration procedure.
El ser humano siempre ha tenido la necesidad de conocer las cantidades de agua que fluyen en los ríos, con fines de aprovechamiento, de prevención o de mitigación de los daños causados por las inundaciones. Además, el calentamiento global está generando un cambio climático que influye, entre otros aspectos, en los patrones de lluvia y en la disponibilidad de los recursos hídricos. Por ello se hace necesario el monitoreo permanente de las cuencas hidrográficas para detectar alteraciones y tomar los correctivos adecuados. En el presente trabajo se describe el desarrollo de un medidor de caudal para ríos que facilita la recolección de información. El proceso se basa en la detección de la velocidad de la corriente de agua a través de una sección transversal del río. Para medir la velocidad se utilizó una hélice con un Sensor de efecto Hall acoplado a ella. La profundidad del río se mide con un Sensor de presión debidamente patronado. Las señales son acopladas a un micro-controlador que procesa, almacena y visualiza localmente la información, a la vez que permite su transferencia a un computador para el análisis por parte del usuario final. En el texto se presenta la estructura del prototipo, al igual que los resultados más interesantes del proceso de calibración.

Radiography, ultrasonography with hydrogram, and contrast studies using radiopaque markers were applied to evaluate alimentary lymphoma in two cats. The hydrogram facilitated the differentiation of ...pseudo-thickening from true wall thickening, and enabled an evaluation of wall layering and lymph nodes. In case 1, mechanical obstruction of the duodenum was confirmed with barium-impregnated polyethylene spheres (BIPS), a radiopaque marker; however, results obtained in case 2 were not as definitive. We expect that hydrograms and BIPS can be used as valuable alternative methods to evaluate the gastrointestinal (GI) tract although further studies in cases involving GI tumors are needed.
