PurposeThis paper reviews the field of internal auditing (IA) post-Enron to develop insights into how IA research has developed, offer a critique of the research to date and identify ways that future ...research can help to advance IA.Design/methodology/approachA structured literature review (SLR) was used to analyse 471 papers from 64 journals published between 2005 and 2018 based on a number of criteria, namely author, journal type, journal location, year, theme, theory, nature of research, research setting, regional focus, method and citations.FindingsThe IA literature has not significantly contributed to knowledge of the internal audit function (IAF), and one still knows relatively little about the factors that contribute to making the impact of IA practice effective and measurable. The IA literature is US-dominated (authors and journals), focussed on the American context (publicly listed companies), reliant on positivist analyses and largely makes no explicit reference to theory. Central regions (emerging economies) and key organisational settings (private SMEs and not-for-profit organisations) are largely absent in prior IA research. This paper evaluates and identifies avenues through which future research can help to advance IA in order to address emerging challenges in the field.Originality/valueThis is the first comprehensive review to analyse IA research in the post-Enron period (2005–2018). The findings are relevant to researchers who are looking for appropriate research outlets and emerging scholars who wish to identify their own research directions.
The purpose of this study is to investigate how the level of controls testing coordination with the external auditor affects internal auditors' effort. The internal auditor's planned substantive ...testing audit hours are the measure of effort in this study. Regulators and stakeholder organizations have encouraged more collaboration between external and internal auditors to improve audit efficiency. The effect of external auditor coordination on internal auditors' planned audit hours has important implications for audit efficiency and effectiveness. An experiment is conducted with 112 internal auditors to examine the hypothesized effect. The study uses a 2 × 2 between-subjects design and manipulates fraud risk and external auditor coordination. Consistent with my prediction, I find that coordination moderates the relationship between fraud risk and planned audit hours. The results illustrate that although high external auditor controls testing coordination decreases internal auditors' planned substantive testing audit hours, internal auditors are more sensitive to responding to fraud risk when external auditor controls testing coordination is high.

In light of the function of Internal Auditing and its significance in assessing and ensuring the validity of data, information, reports, and high lists generated by the Accounting Information System ...and improving its credibility and dependability, the purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between Internal Auditing (IA) and Accounting Information System (AIS) in Jordanian banks, with a focus on the mediator role of Organizational Commitment (OC). A cross-sectional survey method was used to collect data from a sample of employees who work in banks, including those who work in the internal audit department. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 26.0 and PROCESS V4.1. The study sample includes 193 employees who work in banks, including those who work in the internal audit department. Descriptive statistical methods, such as frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations, were employed to depict both the characteristics of the sample and the participants’ responses to the study items. The results indicate that IA has a positive relationship with AIS. Moreover, the results indicate that OC partially mediates the relationship between IA and AIS in Jordanian banks.
ABSTRACT
Approaches to risk governance are not homogeneous across organizations. Some organizations invest heavily in building formal and strategically focused enterprise-wide risk governance ...processes whereas others exhibit reduced formality and focus, allowing risk governance to be less structured. We argue that risk governance may best be described as a service dependent upon a network (or ecosystem) of participants who include users of risk information and providers who design and implement risk governance processes. Using a survey sample of 2,380 observations from 2011 to 2016, we find that external calls for enhanced risk governance are positively associated with risk governance processes having greater formality and strategic focus. We find this relationship is partially mediated by internal demands for enhanced risk governance. Further, we find that the positive association between internal demands and enhanced risk governance is reduced by resource constraints and that a risk-seeking attitude is negatively associated with enhanced risk governance.

ABSTRACT
Using a comprehensive database of U.S. internal auditor job postings, we find that firms are about 10 percent more likely to post an internal auditor job after the revelation of accounting ...and operational failures. Also, the demand for internal auditors is stronger when a failure is more severe. Among firms posting internal auditor jobs, firms demand higher-quality internal auditors in response to a failure compared with when there has not been a recent failure. We find evidence of internal audit demand spillovers through connected directors, which helps mitigate concerns that the primary results are due to replacing internal auditors that recently left or due to endogenous links between hiring internal auditors and failure revelations. Overall, our evidence suggests that firms demand internal auditors to help ensure high-quality financial reporting and effective operations.

The focus of this study is the relationship between chief audit executives (CAEs) and senior management (SM) and its relationship with internal audit (IA) effectiveness. The study reveals differences ...between more and less effective IA functions and offers explanations by studying organizational, personal, and interpersonal factors within the German corporate governance context. The findings show that the pattern of interaction between CAEs and SM is a key determinant of IA effectiveness. This study highlights the danger of viewing customer satisfaction as the key measure of IA effectiveness since in practice expectations can vary significantly and as sometimes very little may be demanded. Moreover, CAEs typically adjust to expectations, upward and downward. CAEs can drive the agenda as well. When it comes to personality factors, "Fingerspitzengefühl" and swimming in the organization characterize the successful internal auditor. IA designations for CAEs were not found to be of added value. At the organizational level, the findings show that companies that are considered as "hidden champions" demand and benefit from effective IA practices.

Purpose
This paper aims to investigate the impact of family involvement in ownership and governance on the quality of internal auditing.
Design/methodology/approach
Leveraging a hand-collected data ...set of listed family firms from 2014 to 2020, this study uses regression analyses to investigate the impact of family ownership, family involvement on the board, family CEO and the generational stage of the family business on the quality of internal auditing.
Findings
The results provide evidence that family ownership is positively associated with the quality of internal auditing, while later generational stages of family businesses have the opposite effect. Additional analyses reveal that the presence of a sustainability board sub-committee moderates the relationship between generational stages of family businesses and the quality of internal auditing function.
Research limitations/implications
This paper does not consider country-institutional factors and other potentially family-related antecedents or governance factors that may affect the quality of internal auditing.
Practical implications
The results are informative for investors and non-family stakeholders interested in understanding under which conditions family-related factors influence the quality of internal auditing functions.
Originality/value
This study offers fresh evidence regarding the relationship between family-related factors and the quality of internal auditing and board sub-committees that moderate such a relationship in family businesses.
The purpose of this paper is to examine the importance of Corporate Governance and Internal Audit at the Real Estate, Investment Properties and Construction sector in Greece and the United Kingdom. ...We conducted a survey to a large number of Greek and UK publicly listed firms operating at the Real Estate Sector based on their turnover and the accessibility of data such as numbers of employees and Internal Audit Department Structures. Specifically, we distributed a large number of structured questionnaires to Audit Committee and Internal Audit members to assess the impact of Corporate Governance best practices and Internal Audit operations at the Real Estate Industry. Our conclusion was that Internal Audit and Corporate Governance play a significant role to the Real Estate industry as they are positively associated with the sustainable development of the Real Estate Industry. Moreover, improved Corporate Governance and Internal Audit is associated with less development costs.
