Research mostly establishes the benefits of humour in the learning process when used properly. We determine how primary school textbooks for Slovene as a mother tongue use verbal and pictorial ...semiotic resources to create humour when learning grammar, which resources are used more often, and how humour is perceived by pupils. Images are the main carrier of information in the creation of humour. An essential component of it is discrepancy with reality, most often expressed as exaggeration. For pupils aged 8 and 10, the involvement of humour is more important than for pupils aged 14.
This research aims to classify the type of Speech function process. This research employed systemic functional linguistics theory of Halliday, particularly speech function as a tool of analysis, more ...specific this research analyzed process of speech function. The phenomenon of speech function, in communicating people need other people who will be our listeners as well as our talking partners at the same time. These actions give rise to various different phenomena due to variations in the ability of each person to apply language and linguistics as well as their cultural background. Because of these divergences, it is undeniable that misunderstandings between listeners and speakers often occur, especially when both participants in a communication are non-native speakers. The data collected from President Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. speech at United State of America from white House You-Tube on March 11th 2021. The researchers used qualitative research design to answer the research question and choose content analysis because the result of the data analyzed is in descriptive phenomenon such as word, clause and utterance. The researchers used documentation as the research instrument. The researchers collected the data that is posted on March, 11th 2021. The findings of this research showed 294 Data that Statement is 292data (99%), Question find 2(1%) data, 0 data for command and offer. The most type of speech function is Statement. In contrast which just 2 question and nothing data for command and offer in his speech
Abstract
Substantial research has drawn upon the notion of interpersonal metafunction proposed by Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) to approach the interpersonal meanings construed in different ...contexts. However, there is a lack of review on the recent research of this domain. The objective of this paper is to survey the patterns and trends of literature on interpersonal metafunction in SFL tradition and guide future research. This paper reviews 160 studies published from 2012 to 2022. Four themes emerge from the review: theoretical explorations, multilingual studies, discourse analysis, and language education. These contributions shed light on the applicability and flexibility of SFL as a theoretical tool across a wide range of genres and languages. The four streams of research are guided by the fundamental concepts of SFL and interrelated by the concept of context and the tenet of language as social semiotic. Future directions lie in theoretical model refinement, methodological developments, typological descriptions of interpersonal grammar, and the extension of application areas.
Promotion is a major strategy in Research article introductions (RAIs) to attract reader's attention and gain recognition. Building on previous researches that suggest promotion in RAIs could be ...realized by different kinds of linguistic elements and rhetoric structures, this study collected 100 SCI RAIs in the discipline of computer science as data and explored the promotion realized by interpersonal metafunction and rhetoric structure of modal adjuncts. Meanwhile, in order to identify if there are differences and similarities of promotion between Chinese EFL RAIs (English RAIs written by Chinese scholars) and English L1 RAIs (English RAIs written by English and American scholars), this study quantified lexical features by examining lexical density, lexical variety and position of modal adjuncts. Results showed that the modal adjuncts could realize promotion through varying interpersonal metafunctions (temporality, modality, intensity and comment) and the model of Create a Research Space (CARS). However, more comprehensive promotion was realized in English L1 RAIs through interpersonal metafunction conveyed by more frequent, more kinds of and more positions of modal adjuncts. Besides, this study also verified that modal adjuncts were encoded of CARS to realize promotion in both Chinese EFL RAIs and English L1 RAIs in the same way because of the same strategies (familiarity and logic) and similar linguistic features. These results are discussed in terms of "constraint communication", and discipline background drawn on for knowledge claims in same and different types of academic writing of promotion between Chinese EFL RAIs and English L1 authors.
Greta Thunberg delivered a speech entitled “You’re Acting Like Spoiled, Irresponsible Children” to influential figures in Europe through the “Civil Society for renaissance” event, in which she was ...personally invited by the president of the organizer, Luca Jahier. Through her speech, she managed to convince the European Union to pledge to spend billions of euros to combat the climate crisis. This study aims to discover how interpersonal metafunction is used in the speech and what functions are revealed through Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis and Hallidayan Systemic Functional Grammar. The data, consisting of seventy-one independent clauses, were taken from Thunberg’s book which consists of her speech transcription, titled “No One Is Too Small to Make a Difference”. The research discovers that through the use of mood, modality, and pronouns, Thunberg conveys her view on her relationship with the audience as victim and perpetrator, and the one who holds responsibility and takes the blame.
The study attempted to explain fundamentals of Systemic Functional Theory as textual analytical instruments. The basis was to demonstrate the applications of Ideational, Interpersonal and Textual ...Metafunctions as alternative semiotic resources that provide composite meaning potential to the structure of the clause. For illustration, six clauses in the advert of Premium Pension Limited were used as textual elements which the three metafunctions were applied. The study revealed conditionality, sensitizationality, judgmentality as well as integrity as the nuggets of the message. In addition, the ad tends to propound solutions to the financial security of the future of the people. The solution is for the recipients to negotiate and begin savings with Premium Pension Limited whose concern is how to care for the people in their old age. Above all, the study concluded that Halliday’s theory as a very practicable tool of textual analysis for researchers.

Abstract
Due to prevalence of formal analysis in language education, the implications of Systemic Functional Grammar has
largely been ignored by materials and methods of language education. To ...illustrate the inadequacies of formal analysis and make a
case for functional analysis and assessment of writing samples, this study aims at exploring the use of modality in a random
sample of expository essays written in an EFL context. To this end, 20 expository essays, written by undergraduate students of
English language and literature, were randomly obtained from writing instructors and professors teaching in the English department
of Shahrood University of Technology (SUT), Iran. Leaners’ use of modality was then analyzed in line with the framework presented
by
Halliday & Matthiessen (2014)
. Analysis revealed learners’ lack of variation in
the expression of uncertainties and doubts and as such lack of mastery over modality since they tended to express their opinions
as implicit and as objective as possible. There seems to be a link between this problem and the dominance of formal analysis in
teaching and assessing writing; hence, the findings of this study have clear implications for teaching instruction in this context
and other similar contexts, where the implications of systemic functional grammar for language education seem to be ignored.
